Why no 4 player co-op splitscreen?

Why can’t we do it anymore? The old games had it, why was it removed??

Can you bring it back 343

There was never 4 player co-oop splitscreen. There was 4 player campaign for Halo3, Reach, and 4, but the max for players on the same xbox was 2. Therefore, two xbox’s were needed to play 4-player co-op.

Edit: Unless you are talking about custom games, and certain matchmaking experiences. Did they get rid of that? There is an achievement for playing with 4 people on the same Xbox on CE, on Blood Gultch.

Hmm…

I remember that you could on the OG halo 2…

Can confirm, OG Halo games had 4 player splitscreen on Multiplayer. Campaign was always locked at 2 on the same console, however.

There was a glitch on Halo 3 and Reach to bypass the two person limit on Campaign, but Halo 3’s Cortana moments would crash the game with more than two players on the same screen.

Not sure if MCC kept the 4 player splitscreen on Multiplayer though.

Theyw did but…

Why can’t i they implement it now?

Because none of the Xbox era campaigns were designed with 4 players in mind.

On the back of MCC it says for Xbox one Co-op 2-4 and Xbox live Coop 2-4. You can play multiplayer and custom games with four people. Just not for campaign. It was only for 2 people for campaign on the same xbox.

But why?

Why can’t we play 4 player splitscreen campaign like the good ol halo 2 days?

There must be some Mandela effect going on here. I don’t remember Halo 2 ever having 4 player Campaign Co-Op. That started with Halo 3, I believe, and even then that was only over Xbox LIVE.

I do though, I distinctly remember there being a screen with four different subscreens that say “press A to join” kinda thing on the OG xbox

Are you certain that was for Campaign and not Custom Games? The multiplayer aspect was 4 player splitscreen.

I remember starting the game and that screen popping up, i think when i hit campaign, but i was like 9 so…. Was a long time ago. I never played the MP though so i am pretty aure it would have been campaign

Can’t be 100% certain though

I’m 100% certain that Halo 2 campaign never featured 4 player campaign let alone 4 player split screen campaign. You can only play 4 player split screen in multiplayer.

Still would be nice to be able to do it though

You are remembering that 100% correctly. There is a screen on OG Halo 2 with four different subscreens (https://www.startpage.com/av/proxy-image?piurl=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2FDSpjdJPnRxw%2Fmaxresdefault.jpg&sp=1640111471T6f48999901cf077c96265da366bd9f9b21d9bc7324033f473f7332352dc75292)

Clicking on “Split Screen” would bring up the menu you are referring too. However, after the players choose a Profile (local profile, not online), you would be taken to the offline Multiplayer Lobby, where you could choose the map and gamemode.

Under the “Gamemodes” tab, you have the option to switch to Co-Op Campaign. If you chose that, it would kick players 3 and 4 out, because you can only have two players in a Campaign level.

Halo 3 is what started the 4 player Co-Op Campaign, but that was only over Xbox Live. There was a way to bypass the two-person per Xbox limit, but that required a glitch (https://youtu.be/KqaArOyOypA). As you can see, the option for 4 players to sign in was always there on 3, but doing so would give an error message, stating that “only a max of two players allowed” (I am paraphrasing). These players had to perform a glitch in order to achieve the 4 player result. Notice that they are playing on “Tsavo Highway”, one of the few levels that doesn’t have a Cortana Moment. Those crash the game with more than two players in the same console.

The same glitch is also in Halo Reach (https://youtu.be/bzOPJO9-HXY). As far as I know, it doesn’t crash the game.

According to other comments here, MCC does have the ability to do 4 player split screen in Multiplayer, but not Campaign. The glitches will more than likely never work in MCC, simply because doing them required manipulating the original games’ UI in tandem with the 360’s Sign-In interface, which MCC does not use.

So in all, Halos CE and 2 never had the ability to play with more than two players in Campaign. 3, ODST, Reach, and 4 never intended to allow you to play with more than two players (on the same console). The only way to do such a thing was 100% an unintended glitch that was more than likely left over from the Multiplayer component of the game. It will probably never be added to MCC, because the glitches introduced unintended side-effects to the game, which was more than likely a limitation of the Game Engine itself rather than the hardware of the console.

Edit: I don’t mean this in an “AKSHUALY” kind of way. I am just trying to help a fellow Spartan out with putting his/her mind at ease with this topic.
