Why land on Halo?

In Halo Combat Evolved and in the story Halo The Flood, Captain Keyes is informed that after jumping away from Reach Covenant forces are already in the area around the new found structure, Installation 04. Now the Pillar of Autumn was desperately trying to escape the Covenant at Reach, hopefully shake them off their tail and eventually get back to Earth to warn the remaining UNSC forces and after regrouping, maybe replan operation Red Flag.

Why is it in Halo Combat Evolved/ The Flood that Captain Keyes knowing full well that he is out manned and outgunned decide to stay at Installation 04 let alone land on it? Why not keep trying to run from the Covenant?

They were trying to escape Reach, as you know, and Cortana ended up using the coordinates they recently discovered for a desperate escape. However, because the Covenant had better tech, they beat the PoA to Installation 04, something they were not expecting. At that point, everyone on the PoA was trapped and landing on the ring was their only option. They couldn’t let the boarding parties take over the ship, which is why Keyes initiated Cole Protocol for asset denial. That’s when Keyes told Chief he needed to get Cortana away safely and protect her because she held a lot of vital information related to humanity such as… EARTH. The rest is explained as you play CE.

It’s already been established that if a Covenant vessel detects a UNSC ship doing a slipspace jump, they can predict it’s destination and thanks to their superior technology, arrive long before the humans. Everytime the Autumn jumps, it’ll just find itself surrounded by hostile forces who are waiting in ambush. Sooner or later the Autumn’s luck’s gonna run out.
Might as well stay and explore this mysterious ringworld floating in space, who knows what secrets it holds? Secrets that could win the war perhaps.

The above reasons.

Also? He was trying to save his crew. In space, all you have is the ship to keep you alive and UNSC ships are paper to Covenant weapons. Keyes can’t fight, he’s got a Spartan, a extremely valuable AI and the lives of his entire crew. The Halo had atmosphere and Earth-like conditions. Better to abandon ship and crash the ship with the hope of future rescue than to die in the cold vacuum of space.

Even the upgraded Autumn wouldn’t stand a chance against the sheer number of Covenant vessels it was facing. Keyes is no fool.
On the ground at least the UNSC stands a chance; most victories won by them were terrestrial battle. That, and the Halo’s mostly wilderness; perfect gurerilla territory.

Hmm I do agree with and understand most of the responses given but considering when Keyes first arrives at Halo they have no idea how valuable Halo is to the Covenant religion. So for all he knows the Covenant would just glass them from orbit as they land on the ring since they have no way of escape.

True, but wilderness doesn’t offer much protection if you know your enemy has a history of glassing the wilderness and no immediately obvious reason as to your enemy not doing the same thing when you land on the ring.

The Flood mentions Cortana picked up Covenant chatter discussing its religious significance. Its not mentioned in the game but I have no doubt that she would have relayed that to Keyes.
So they’d know they wouldn’t just start glassing.

That occurs after they have already landed though.

It’s still easier to survive than in space. Even if they had started Glassing the Ring, glassing takes time and the surviving crew of the Autumn was scattered across a large area and staying very mobile and thus hard to corner and eliminate.

Nah, she mentions first when she and Chief are on the Bumblebee. More than likely she was picking up and decrypting their communications through the entire fight.

Yeah, just went back and checked the book, you are correct. It’s strange that in the game she only brings that up during the mission Truth and Reconciliation, long after the initial landing.

Theres a few odd discrepencies between the book and the game, but thats just how it goes.
