Why Join In-Progress May Not Be Bad

Alright, so everyone’s going crazy over these details about a join-in-progress ability. Everyone is bent out of shape over this, and in my opinion, this could very well be a good thing… if regulated correctly.

For instance, I hope that this is not a default setting, where going into matchmaking will throw you into a game already in progress. Instead, I hope that there is a sub-option to allow you to search for games in progress and join them. Perhaps you’re in the mood to go save the day.

More importantly, I hope that this option is available to people on YOUR FRIENDS LIST. Take this situation if you will:

You’re in a party chat with a buddy, and you’re like ‘We’ll pick you up after this game’. Well, the game is going on, and your teammate quits. Things are looking bad for your team. Your buddy can then jump into your game on your team and re-establish a full team. Or, say you pop H4 in the disk tray, and go to the main menu, and take a peak at your friends list. You see that a couple of your friends are in a match, and they are down a player. Surprise them by jumping into the game and helping them out!

This way, players CHOOSE to join games in-progress instead of being FORCED to. I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve been in a game by myself waiting for my friend’s game to end, and my teammates quit out. It would be great for him to be able to jump into my game to help me finish it out so we can begin playing together.

However, this must be regulated. I hope that at least for Ranked games, there is a sort of “lock” on what players can join matches in-progress. For instance, my girlfriend is a Silver player. Say she is in a game of all Silver level players, and one of her teammates quit. I would find it incredibly unfair to the other team if I, a top 1% Onyx player, jump in to her game and win the game for them. Potentially, this could be abused if there isn’t some sort of “rank lockout” system.

Also, perhaps they can implement a system where the stats you acquire from joining an in-progress match do not count towards your personal stats, that way, if you join a losing match, it won’t hurt you. Thus, you can only try to help out a team.

What are YOUR thoughts?

I like that but that is why everyone hates it “it changes the feel of halo” PPHH!!!

> I like that but that is why everyone hates it “it changes the feel of halo” PPHH!!!

I understand that it will change the feel, but is it really a feeling we will miss?

The only feeling it will change is when you see the other team is down 2 players and thus the game is pretty much over, and for the other team, their feeling is that they must now sit for 7 minutes in a game just to lose.

The reason why it shouldn’t/won’t work in Halo is because of the idea of winning. Hopefully Halo 4 puts more emphasis on winning (i.e. exp. or some other form of it, similar to Halo 3) rather than simply cR (Reach). I don’t want to join a game mid-way through and end up being on a team of 2 simpletons who have -1 combined score vs. a full team of competent players who have already scored over 25 kills.

CoD doesn’t put emphasis on winning as much as Halo has (even Reach has more emphasis on winning) and the in-and-out style of CoD is necessary to keep its fanbase happy (i.e. the kids with small attention spans, requiring short respawn times, etc.).

If you quit a game, you are likely doing very bad. If someone who is going -8 quits, that is good for you. I’ve beat a team with only 2 people (on my team) before.

I would accept this idea if it doesn’t throw you into a game that is 45-2 AND if this, in no way at all, is implemented in Ranked (if they don’t add ranked, I promise, I will go to Call of Duty. If they want to be call of duty, they can try, but they’ll never come close.).

Here is why:

I am a 50 in Halo 3.
My friend is 15.
His teammate quits.
I join.
I carry.
He ranks up.

That is like playing on a booster, but with out actually deranking. He won’t rank up as fast, though.

You’re not in the top 1% Onyx.

This is my new account. My old account of the same name was hacked and locked. My old account was not only 1% onyx each season, but also on (the now closed) HaloCharts.com’s Top 10 players in multiple seasons (Season 4 pic and Season 5 pic).

My only issue with joining a game in progress would be joining a game thats almost over and your own the losing team. It would have to be join in progress within the first few minutes…

I agree, that would definitely pose an issue, that why I hope that the system allows you to CHOOSE if you want to join in progress, that way, you get what you ask for, and if you’re joining to help out some friends like I said above, then oh well, you tried to help.

onyx is nothing to brag about. yay you can jetpacks good and are bestest of 500 people LOL

Just have joining in progress count as a tie if you lose.

I completely agree with everything you have stated. Join in progress can be a great feature if it can be selectively chosen. If there is no method of disabling the feature then there may be a diminished chance of getting a fresh game if you are looking to play on your own.

I’m not bragging about it, I am simply trying to state that it would be unfair for anyone of significant higher skill to join someone’s game of lower skill (who is matched with equally lower skilled opponents) and win the game for them. Also, I do not use jetpack. I play Bumper Jumper, thus making Jetpack nearly useless for me. I only use Sprint.

Much like BF3. It puts you in a game that as at the end and you’re on the losing team because the players on the losing team are quitting.

I don’t particularly care for that.

It’s a horrible idea, because of two reasons. First one is the HUGE Reason

*Game player network connections affect the inevitable “Lag” latency in a game. If people can join and leave as they please the connections can quite easily, possibly inevitably cr@p themselves far more!

That’s the big reason for why I don’t want it.

I agree. Hopefully there could be some sort of playlist that specifically searches for games in need of players… perhaps something like “Instant Action” since there would be a wealth of games fully ready for you to jump in.

Or, perhaps just another search restriction option like the ones already implemented.

I just see a lot of positive potential out of this idea. However, I could see it go negative as well if it is not handled correctly. We’ll just have to see.

Well now I just don’t believe anything you type. You’ve lost all validity with me. Do you even have a girlfriend?!?! My world has been shattered!

Lol I’m sorry? Yes, I have a girlfriend. I sleep next to her every night, and every morning I wake up and she’s taken over 90% of the bed. As for the jetpack, I’ve never liked it, and prefer being able to jump while keeping my thumb on the analog stick to aim over being able to use Jetpack. On top of that, it’s just not a very useful armor ability on most maps. It’s useless on Zealot. Barely useful on Countdown. You’re completely out in the open if you use it on Powerhouse. It’s really only useful on The Cage, but after Uncaged was created and implemented, it’s usefulness fell even further. Have I used it in the past? Sure, when I was just getting started. However, I switched back to Bumper Jumper pretty quickly, and thus, my Jetpacking days were over.

But this is all beside the point. Point is, I could really see some good things come from the join in progress if used correctly. However, if players are FORCED to join games already in progress, it’s really going to anger some people.

If joining games in progress would be optional, then what would be the incentive for most players to join games in progress? Nobody would really want to join a game in progress would they? The only case i can think of is if friends want to join in, which is cool but if only friends joined games in-progress then that probably wouldn’t resolve team imbalances in most cases.
Possibly could work if joining games in progress gets you into the game significantly faster than regular matchmaking and if they have separate ‘% of games won’ and ‘% of games joined in progress won’

That’s what I was thinking. Perhaps offer some sort of “Instant Action” playlist that throws you into a game almost immediately, and perhaps not count your stats, so instead, it’s sort of a way to play a “half game” while you wait for your friend’s game to end where you can warm up, and not have your stats count, all while perhaps helping the current team win.
