Why it's hard to stay invested with Halo

First of all this is not a post criticizing 343 or praising Bungie or any of that, this is just my current thought on the current state of Halo regardless on whether you think it’s good or bad.

Personally I am a massive Halo nerd, I have played nearly every game in the franchise and I’m familiar with most of the extended universe as well. However the problem is that the fan base is so polarized and split right now I have trouble getting into deep conversations with other fans about our passion for Halo without someone turning it into “343 sucks” or “343 has no flaws” or whatever. I don’t care about that but no one else seems to care much for the lore or games or anything anymore, i’s just one big flame war. On top of that Halo is starting to turn into an annualized series which just kind of takes away from the special feeling of when the next big Halo tittle is released after years of anticipation. But to me the worst part is if almost anyone has anything negative to say about Halo, regardless if it is criticism or not, will be told “If you don’t like it then just leave” which is really disheartening. It’s hard to keep playing this game with so much hostility and very little passion left in the players that I spent so many hours of my life sharing my passion with.

For the first time in my life i have seriously thought of actually selling my Halo games and moving on which is very depressing since I love the series so much and it has been such a big part of my childhood but it almost doesn’t seem worth it when the only thing that the fans seem to care about is how much they hate each other.

How is Halo starting to turn into an annualized series? Halo 4 came out in 2012. Halo 5: Guardians came out in 2015. Halo 6, whatever its actual name, will likely be out in 2018.

we got Halo 4 in 2012, spartan assault in 2013, the MCC in 2014, spartan strike in 2015, and Halo wars 2 comes out this year. Its not a stretch to guess well be getting a game next year too and then H6 in 2018.

I would be thrilled with annual games. Hopefully you’re right!

If that’s the way you’re looking at things, Halo has been an annualized series since 2009.

I agree with the above statement!

I heard 2020. We’re getting Halo Wars 2 and possibly Halo 3 Anniversary first.

I would not honestly. It’s kind of why I don’t like Call of Duty much; once I buy a game, I only have like 6 months to play the game until it loses most of its population. Same would happen to Halo. But, Microsoft wants money, so of course, they don’t care if people get franchise fatigue and games just lose populations faster than a filter loses water. Veterans would reminisce about the good old days when Halo maintained large populations, even during the Reclaimer Arc.

Little phone games and an HD version makes it an ‘annualized series’?

Really doubt microsoft would give them 5 years to work on a main tittle.

HW2 isn’t event being made by 343.

It’s different with Halo because the games are different. If they were dropping core numbered Halo games every year, yeah I’d be pissed but spartan assault, halo wars and anniversary editions aren’t the same as a brand new core COD every year.

These all bring something new to the table and stay fresh. So I think the annualization as it stands now is fine

I hardly think you can count the mobile games and remakes as annualising the Franchise. And the Wars games are made by other companies and are completely different from the core games.

though if they wanted to make some sort of ODST style expansion using the Halo 5 engine that would be pretty cool.

I don’t see it as affecting population really. Many already play for only 6 months and hop onto one of the serialized games. I feel that’s happening right now in H5s lifecycle.

You don’t have to get every single game, and Spartan Assault/Strike are very different experiences, being that they are more bite size mobile missions meant to be able to be consumed that way. As for MCC I am assuming, based on your post, that you have already played all the campaigns, so not completely a urgent new story to experience in any of those.

I think you guys are describing the path of the games industry as a whole. Everyone (both devs and players) is constantly trying to get on to the next new thing, and therefore less games are experiencing longevity in their population. A couple of friends and I got on Titanfall recently, and the population was fine enough to quickly get into our match, but a few of the people in our party were like “man I don’t think I have ever played a two year old game.”

It’s also what turned me off of the Assassin’s Creed series. Now there is an unnecessary milking machine, and I worry that Halo is too with so many books and comics and spin off things being released over the years. With AC, I only like the original and ACII. Everything else after that made me feel exhausted.

The only thing killing Halo right now is the brainless, hateful vocal minorities within the community. I wish they’d just jumped ship rather than sticking around after Halo 4, but the stuck on.

What 343 needs is positive feedback just as much as negative. Just because the REQ system sucks, the entire multiplayer is -Yoink-. Didn’t like Cortana’s twist? Bad story.

I mean, just look at the metacritic user reviews. I can’t even make sense of half of the -Yoink- they say.

“No splitscreen 0/10”

If anyone is the one that should leave its probably you, ACTUAL CRITICISM is not hate and it’s not just some small minority there is a significant portion of the fans that are currently dissatisfied with some features of this game. For one thing splitscreen may not be important to you but the local co-op is very important to many players including myself, it was one of the best experiences of Halo to sit down with 3 of your friends and just have fun playing Halo together but that is something that is no longer possible. As to other arguments you again don’t have to agree with them but at least respect their opinions, these people didn’t jump off at H4 because they are actually passionate about Halo and they want it to be successful and to be a game they want to play and share it with others, its not just something that we played because we thought it was fun at the time it was something we cared about. you are the real problem here because Halo is already having enough population problems as it is but you want to kill the game faster by taking away the loyal and passionate part of the player base and on top of that you discredit their arguments by calling it just “hate” .

That was the point of this thread people like you are killing the fanbase by attacking anyone that disagrees with you or 343, instead we need to listen to each others ideas and be constructive with or debates not discredit an entire side of the argument as mindless “hate”. Now granted there are haters on both sides of the arguement but that doesn’t discredit the thoughts and opinions of others either.

Criticism is aimed to companys to let them know what they did wrong so they don’t repeat the same mistake again.
But based on your post history i doubt you knows criticism actually means at all.

I can tell you why some people have problems with 343 and Halo 5 generally.

Halo 5’s campaign problems:
Misleading ads
Jul’s death
Warden eternal boss fights
343’s ways to bring back Cortana
The domain.
Too many osiris/ Too little blue team missions
The story didn’t make sense at all
Lack of continuity

343/s problems:
Bait and switch ( Oni card and Halo 5 campaign)
Lying ( Frankie promised to tell us what went wrong with MCC. They also promised to fix MCC 100%. They also lied about Pros wanted breakout in team arena or something like that. Cortana’s death.
Treated lore fans like a idiots( Frankie’s time intervew was so pathetic that i facepalmed hard)

it’s more but i don’t bother to bring them up.

With the direction the universe is going in terms of the lore and the quality of the most recent games I too have thought about moving on after almost 11 years. I always look at my book shelf full of halo novels, action figures, Megabloks sets, and my walls where my sports awards and halo posters are the only thing worthy of being up there, and I wonder how I would possibly be able to fill the void if I were to move on. Not to mention what I would do with all that stuff. The community is so split and my biggest gripes with the games as of late are the universe, the fact that halo is becoming a less mature title (books and action figures too Mattel) and the quality of Halo 5 and MCC. I’m considering waiting on reviews for Halo 6 before I buy.
