Why isn't the mantis named after a mammal?

?

(i must be getting tired i forgot about al the other non-mammal vehicles)

This isn’t the first vehicle not to do that actually, they are just named after animals.

Scorpion, Pelican, Falcon, Cobra, and Hornet say hi.

UNSC vehicles aren’t named soley after mammals. The way I look at it, UNSC vehicles are generally named after real, living things while Covie vehicles are generally named after supernatual, undead things. There’s some exceptions though.

Vulture and Albatross also say hello.

> Scorpion, Pelican, Falcon, Cobra, and Hornet say hi.

Wow I completely forgot about the scorpion and hornet

For Covies: Ghost, Banshee, Phantom, Spectre, Shadow, Seraph, Revenant, Scarab

Yeah they’re both pretty consistent, I doubt 343 would throw that off.

Then there’s the only two mythological names as well, Cyclops and Gremlin.Oh, and Hawk.

Covenant got their vehicles from Ghostly stuff, except for Vampire, Locust and Scarab. Where vampire isn’t an intangiable entity and Locust and Scarab are names of insects.

Locusts are also seen as a supernatural omen of plague and famine, as well as embodiments of demons. Scarabs are regarded as sacred in Egyptian Paganism, as well. So they retain the “Supernatural” theme of Covenant vehicular names.

Yeah, I mostly meant Cyclops and Gremlin. Hawk’s a real animal. And I’d argue Vampire, Locust, and Scarab all fit as the above poster said.
