Another thing, I have a suspicion that Chief is the one who is trying to light the ring, not Cortana as so many people believe. The reason is to destroy the domain. We see this in the trailer where Chief walks into the control room and what else can he be there for other than to light up the ring? It’s so obvious, or at least it always has been to me. It’s possible Cortana somehow intervened and and annihilated the section of the ring with the control room. How she does this I’m not sure. Maybe with a Guardian.

Anders is on a ring called Installation 09 while Zeta was part of the original 12 ring system from the Greater Ark which was destroyed during the Forerunner/ Precursor War. Only 2 of the original 30,000 KM Ring system remain, Zeta being one of them but was reduced to 10,000 KM due to heavy damage.

Then read the Kelly Gay series that begins with renegades.
Halo novels are pretty great scfi stories and shd light on all the questions you have. Also installation 04C/09 is not Zeta halo.

Ugh. I’ve always hated the new ring designations. Technically, 6 of the 7 rings were already replacements, so 01B-06B. Halo 3 would be 04C, then HW2 as 04D. Zeta is 10,000km just like the others due to repairs from the Lesser Ark, cause the Greater Ark is Flood controlled that made the array initially of 30,000km rings. So it’s still the original ring.
More ring replacements means more numbers greater than 12, the original array size before 08-012 were destroyed and never replaced. There will always be 7.

It better to think of the original 12 as a different array than the modern 7. The original 12 weren’t really galaxy clearers, they have a directional shot.
Both old and new designations do not support the original 12 being counted in the system. Zeta halo’s just special in that it occupies both.
i think the OP is onto something here Lighting the Ring could intentionally destroy the domain and disorganise the created.
Could it be that Zeta Halo being one of the older designs rather than the newer replacement. That it has precise accuracy being it could just target the domains location?
if it is the case it would seem like a obvious choice & the entire play of setting up a trap for Cortana to arrive at the ring and having the entirety of the created in disarray as their leader is lost on a ring & recovered by the UNSC/master chief but unforeseen circumstances being the banished skewed the plan up but not entirely though… Halo infinite campaign begins…

Maybe not the most efficient, but probably the most informative.
Alpha/Zeta issues aside, perhaps the damages has something to do with the downed guardian on the surface, and what looks like a UNSC ship near it?
Though thinking back to CE, we know that a large explosion on the surface not only shattered that are of the ring, but the shockwave caused the ring to shatter at other points. We see that Zeta Halo is still intact.
Not only that, but the map appears to be relatively close to the breakage point, yet remains lush and habitable. Yet in Halo 2, we see the scorch damage extends for hundreds, if not thousands of kilometres up spin from a break point (as you’d expect from an explosion big enough to break the ring).
I think it’s more likely that during whatever event occurred 6 months ago, the ring was destroyed from within. For instance, perhaps Cortana began ejecting sections in a bid to slow the UNSC down, combined with some small scale explosive damage?
Didn’t the ring go through a small planet at some point in which the gravitational pull of said planet ruptured parts of the ring? maybe i just dreamed that i’m not 100% so don’t quote me

It did, but that was back when it was the larger, older, model ring. It was afterwards repaired and refurbished into similar specs as the other 6.
