Why is this game soooo.. Blurry?

Playing HAlo 3, HAlo 3: ODST, and Reach… none of them were blurry or had as much flare as this game does. The game is all foggy and the lens flare ruins it.

And im not talking about lens flare. I’m just talking about straight up Flare from ALL the objects… Like your contacts are dirty.

Halo 3

Forerunner objects don’t even look like forerunenr objects. Everythings blurry as heck and plastic looking. It seriously looks like an SDTV game.

Well that seems to be a problem with your Tv/Monitor or maybe the cables not sure.

When I play the game does not looks like that.

This. What resolution do you have set?

You guys are serious…

You DONT see any blurriness compared with halo 3? Or Halo reach? It’s like they blurred it to make the graphics seem better to hide the flaws. When we all know they arent as good as Reach.

On even my friends TV its blurry… And all Youtube videos I see. The game is blury as fk. Reach and all the past halos were clear and crisp

I’ll take direct physical evidence over whatever TV your friend has and youtube.

This looks fine and it’s the same map (Ravine if anyone missed the original linked image) with near enough the same distances involved. And speaking from my own direct experience it’s no different from what I see when playing (so can discount the effect of any improvements (though as far as I know none exist) that the system may be making when taking a static image of a live-rendering game.) That’s the bar and if you don’t happen to reach it then it’s your screen’s fault, not the game’s.

One’s a full-res bit of promotional material and the other is a miscellaneous screenshot from the bowels of the internet with god-only-knows-what done to it since it was first made. You haven’t exactly made a fair comparison.

> Seriously… compare the two links i posted

Actually the picture you posted now looks better but the one you had before you edited your post indeed was blurry I can’t see the problem on this one.

I see what you mean, it annoys me a lot. They probably just don’t get it. You’re going to have explain it in detail.

Sorry man, I don’t see a difference in ‘blurriness.’

It is called technical trickery. It is the degeneration of polygons into frames from specific distances. It is most prominent in Halo 4 due to the detail and resolution of the game itself.

> I see what you mean, it annoys me a lot. They probably just don’t get it. You’re going to have explain it in detail.

If you’re referring to any scaling-with-distance that might be going on to make Spartans not look like this (unscoped) across the length of ragnarok, it’s a basic fact of modern 3D gaming. Halo 2 had it, Halo 1 had it, Reach had it in spades. The last relevant game I played that didn’t was Doom 2. The issue may be that you’re just noticing it for the first time (but then again there isn’t much to notice.)

But it is more prominent within Halo 4 itself because of the age of the console. They had to use a significant amount of trickery to improve the detail itself and have it visible within accommodating ranges but it is still quite noticeable. I in-fact noticed it on my first gameplay. There are other things that were sacrificed for the increase in the polygon count and resolution/detail or one or the other. The water on Ragnarok and Ravine and Forge Island are good examples of this, they are completely under-detailed. It’s not hard to notice why things appear blurry and deteriorative in Halo 4 more than any other Halo game so far.

That’s not an accurate comparison of how the games look on properly-configured TVs. One of those screenshots is pointing away from the sun; the other, toward it. Naturally, the amount of lens flare and visual bloom will differ.

Now, if you’re seeing that specific visual difference even when you’re not looking out toward the sun in Halo 4, then I’d recommend setting your TV up to increase contrast and either increase or decrease brightness. Experiment to find the right values. Write down your normal settings beforehand in case something gets messed up and you need to reset.

It’s called Dynamic Lightning. Even in real life we have something called Atmospheric Perspective as things get higher and go into the distance the lighter and more blurry they become.

I’ll debate that. The only games where I had issues with distant detail was Halo 2 (when I first noticed it but it stopped being an issue shortly there after) and Reach (where objects such as characters and scenery became barely-distinct blobs just when you entered the tip of long-ranged combat. There’s the age of the hardware to consider but also the sophistication and efficiency of the software to make individual games look better or worse depending on how they’re implemented.)

Halo 4, in my opinion, does an absolutely fine job at covering for distance (except for water but that’s not an issue with scaling but of having different priorities than Bungie.) Take, for example, that first screenshot I linked (miscellaneous forge map on Ravine). Everything you see in the background is either the same or near-enough where it makes no difference to what you’d experience in game. Distant objects are rather crisp, textures good, the details reasonably distinct, and all in all it looks fine. There’s no issue, not one that wouldn’t also be present in any other game (especially Reach).

Its called dynamic lighting

Halo 4 actually has distinctly less motion blurr than reach.

Honestly the Halo 3 image is more blurry for me

Oddly enough going back to Halo:Reach it had more motion blur and a heck of a lot more screen tearing. I think for the amount of RAM and capabilities the Xbox 360 has, their doing pretty good. Imagine a new Halo game on the next xbox if it has more RAM?

Makes me excited just thinking about it.
