Why is there not a major Halo movie in the works?!

I am truly dumbfounded that there has not been any real talks of making a major Halo movie. I am aware that there are a few Halo movies and mini series out, but no major motion pictures. I think it would be great for the franchise. I do realize though that the overall plot of the movie would be tricky, and it would have to satisfy both the average Halo fan and the die hard Halo fanatic which is virtually impossible. However, I do want to hear input from others that are better versed in these discussions and hopefully get some insight.

I have to think it would be easy to satisfy both actually.
They could make one hell of a movie just converting the Fall of Reach into a movie script. That alone is better than just about any sci-fi movie.

I have also wondered if they were to do a hybrid between the story of Contact Harvest and the first part of fall of reach. The plots could run simultaneously, one focusing on the economic and political structure of humans and their insurrection, introduce the Covenant and their motives ( as in how the heck their genocide even started), and the third thread of the story would be the abduction and development of the Spartan 2 program.

All three threads work well chronologically, and with a slight tweaking of Canon it would work. (All I see that they would need to change is maybe include Spartans in the re-retaking of harvest, If I remember right, once harvest throws back the first wave, the Covenant take it again, and then the humans take it back AGAIN, and then the Covenant destroy it).
They could show that part of the histories, which are never specifically outlined in a halo story, only referenced.

I think it would be a mind blowing excellent movie. It would show the humans pretty- Covenant War, the Covies pre human war, how the war starts, the origins of the Spartans, their badassery in retaking Harvest, a badass space battle raging overhead while they have boots on the ground, the Spartans ground success amidst doomed naval warfare and the all but inevitable extinction of humanity. It would be a dark and depressing ending, but set up such a heroic tale of humanity’s struggle.

Although an adaption of the Fall of Reach would be cool to see in a live-action movie, I think a story like ODST would also make a good movie. It has memorable characters, cool settings and an interesting premise with you searching for your squad at night in a city that has been invaded by aliens.

Several years ago there was a major push on to get a feature film made. Peter Jackson and WETA were part of the negotiations - the remnants of their involvement can be seen in Halo: Landfall. Ultimately everything fell apart because the major studios balked at the amount of money Microsoft was demanding that they commit to the project. And when you look at the questionable track record of videogame film adaptations you can understand why they would be apprehensive. In the end when Microsoft couldn’t get anybody else to assume the lion’s share of the risk they decided to move ahead in other ways. That was when the rumor mill got going over Dreamworks and their potential involvement in a Halo-related property - Spielberg’s name came into it, although only as a producer, if I recall rightly. That project may still be under way, but they certainly don’t seem to be in any hurry. At any rate, don’t expect a feature film any time soon. Too much greed involved for that to ever get off the ground. And honestly it’s probably better that way. I’m flexible about the quality of my video games, but I’m less so when it comes to the quality of movies, and I would have absolutely zero tolerance for a bad Halo movie.

Oh, and there’s this: http://www.wired.com/2012/04/halo-movie-generation-xbox/

I would love to see a Halo movie.

I also wouldn’t mind an official, new age show / cartoon (kinda like Ninja Turtles that I grew up on back in the day).

There is so much lore to pull from, and spin off opportunities, I could see 20… 30 seasons of a well done show / cartoon.

Microsoft and 343 would rather make low buget mini movies mostly made for advertising. Halo is held back so much for the sake of trying to milk every penny from it. It’s a shame such a good series

A Halo movie has been attempting to come to light since 2005, it’s currently in development purgatory.

This seems to me to be the exact truth. It is frustrating to me because such efforts have resulted in ZERO income from a real movie.

recon Z 3 R O seems to have the right of it as well. Most videogame movies really do suck. While that would be an appropriate fear for film studios, Halo will not suffer from the same fate. I mean, no matter their console loyalty, EVERYONE tips their hat to Halo’s story.

Halo can appease hardcore sci-fi fans better than Star Wars, and military movie fans as well. I really do think a full blown halo movie franchise would end up snuffing out Star wars in the long run. Their is so much depth and character to the lore.

All that said, I would prefer no halo movie over some cheap crappie production like Nightfall.

I believe that was turned into District 9 because they could use the futuristic equipment, unless you are talking about something else.

Becuase of greed!

How is not making hundreds of millions of dollars from a feature film equate to “holding back to milk every penny?”

Yes, Blomkamp was at one point tied to the Halo movie, but instead chose to proceed with District 9.

At least from general understanding, Microsoft has entered negotiations demanding too much, seeking to maximize profit. If they hadn’t tried to ‘milk every penny’, they would likely have succeeded in getting the movie rolling. Instead, their terms were rejected, resulting in the cancellation of the project. Obviously the details are nigh impossible to confirm, but seems to be the consensus.

I have been wanting a movie that follows Halo CE campaign ever since I first played it. I want it to happen so badly

Here’s what I will never understand until the day comes that MS can finally shut us up: We keep getting (and feeding into) all these BLAM! re-boots and “reimaginings” and “expanded storyline sequels” and furthermore inundated with lame teenybopper flicks about sparkling vampires and post-apocalyptic thrillers. Not to mention even plenty of other SMALLER & albeit LESS dedicated films concerning other game franchises (Assassin’s Creed, Warcraft, Silent Hill, Prince of Persia, Doom, etc) that have undoubtedly been rather hit or miss. However, a Halo feature film by a major studio has been approached more than once, and is dead on its feet before production ideas even get moving. Many props (no pun intended) to Weta for their commitment way back in the day, to making a Halo movie happen. But I digress, and will second the above sentiments that it all comes down to money. le sigh
I do have hope that if and when a Halo movie happens for realz, we have people like Frank and Kiki, and Bonnie, et al, that will make sure it’s done and done right- knowing its us the fans that’ll make or break its fortune.

The sad thing is that there almost was a major halo movie. The movie is out but sadly the halo part of it didn’t work out and it became district 9.

I didn’t like district 9 anyway. It looked cool but I didn’t like the main character nor the giant cockroaches.

Shame Peter Jackson was busy with LOTR, maybe we can pitch it to him again…

Halo!
The Movie

Actually since Halo is such a huge universe, I think it would do better if it were a multi season tv show, like game of thrones. You could tell several stories in one season.
