Why is the tech support in this game so bad?

Seriously, I don’t get it. 343 is a massive company with near infinite funds, so why can’t we get the same technical prowess as any other online multiplayer game? I’ve seen indie games with better server connectivity. This is the killing blow in a game that’s already dropped a lot of players due to prolonged imbalance and lack of community communication. The ranking system is already pretty arbitrary, but it sucks the one thing you can count on is disconnecting and losing your 5+ game win streak. That’s one way to keep people playing, I guess.

I dont feel the need to mention the much griped about issue of re-downloading the whole game or needing a factory reset to even play it after it’s “grand finale”, but… too late…

I get that halo wars 2 is a smaller franchise than the main halo series, but seriously, this is kind of ridiculous. Even if it is a problem on team xbox’s end, why didn’t this get brought to their attention much sooner?

Massive? Infinite funds? I don’t think you understand much about 343’s development.

The number of employees 343 has is about 450, for comparison:

Bioware: 800
CD Projekt Red: 700
Blizzard: 4,700

343 actually has a really small development team, split up even further between Halo 5, HW2, MCC, Halo Recruit, and Halo 6. So you can imagine we probably have a ridiculously small (but dedicated) team behind Halo Wars 2, that simply can not work as fast as they want to.

Additionally, there isn’t a constant stream of money flowing in for Halo Wars 2. A publisher give a developer a contract which basically says “we will give you X amount of dollars to make this game, your budget is Y amount of dollars, make it happen!” After that the money that is actually made off of selling the game goes directly to the publisher, not the developer.

Summary: 343 has a small team, they don’t have an infinite pool of money to draw upon, they have their budget set by their publisher (Microsoft) and once that is gone and their publisher doesn’t want to give them more money, it’s done.

It isn’t bad to wish that updates/fixes could come faster, but don’t assume that 343 is just being lazy. They’re working as hard as they can with the resources they have.

P.s. The redownloading issue is on Xbox’s OS software, so it’s up to them and their “infinite resources” to fix, not 343.

This still hardly seems justifiable. it’s been a problem a month into the game, and it’s still not resolved. Why? I get that money isn’t infinte, it was quite obviously an exaggeration, but this is still unacceptable. You’re really telling me they have time to develop all this paid DLC and not fix basic connectivity?

They also might waste a lot of time reading threads on the same old thing

We both know that’s not true. And here’s te magic way to fix it: address the concerns. People will stop complaining as soon as it’s fixed.

The connectivity is an issue I simply don’t understand. No idea why that hasn’t been fixed yet. It’s been better and worse (I personally haven’t had a disconnect for months) but I understand that it is strange that it hasn’t been fixed yet.

As for fixing other technical issues, it makes sense that they have time to make DLC but not fix them. If you have a small team, you have to choose between spending more resources on the DLC or the technical issues. With two parties (your publisher and your fans who throw a temper tantrum if DLC is 3 minutes late) breathing down your neck for the DLC to be released, you’re going to spend more resources on the DLC than the technical issues. Chances are, Microsoft is breathing down their neck to make sure that the 4k update is ready to roll next week that they’re spending the majority of their time on that along with a bunch of other fixes. I’d assume the next patch is a big one.

Again, the redownloading issue (I assume that’s what you mean by “it’s been a problem a month into the game”) is up to Xbox, it is completely out of 343’s hands.

I know. Sorry I couldn’t help it. It would be real nice for the servers and the ranked to be fixed. I’ve seen probly a hundred posts on this though. First let’s get the game balanced then hopefully stuff gets fixed. In the meantime let’s try to be patient with 343

We didn’t know that last thing until a month ago, that’s ridiculous. If they knew it was a problem, they should’ve either looked into it much sooner or given us an update much sooner. Blood tests take less time to turn up resukts. I understand they have to make money, but it’s just crazy that this is still an issue. At the very least, there shouldn’t be a ranked penalty for the game lagging players out, that’s just crazy. My internet isn’t amazing or anything, but it can handle much beefier online games with no DCs. I feel so bad for people with bad internet that DC a lot.

Time out, before we continue our discussion I need you to clarify what you’re talking about.

Are you talking about connectivity issues or the redownloading issue?

We’ve been plenty patient. It’s been nearly a year, still no end in sight. Hell, it wasn’t a month ago until they even told us they didn’t know what was up. We all paid for the game, why should we not get basic tech support? The posts will stop when the problem isn’t fixed, it’s that simple.

also, game balance is worthless if I lose a match due the server going out of sync. If it’s just a matter of who’s internet will hold out the longest, what’s point?

Both, all of it. It’s a mass of ridiculous tech issues. Re-downloading, going out of sync, factory resets needed, horrendous communication, prioritizing DLC over basic functionality, a ranking system that’s punishes the player for the inaction on the part of the Devs, it’s all nonsense.

At the very least, there shouldn’t be a ranked penalty for the game lagging players out, that’s just crazy. I’ll try and address these issues one by one.

  1. Redownloading and resets: They’ve been working on finding out and fixing this issue since it was first presented. The reason why it took them forever to find the cause of the issue is because nothing was wrong with their code, which is all they would look at. Once that was discovered, the contacted the Xbox team who is working on it. Any and all frustrations regarding the redownloading issue should be directed at Xbox.
  2. Going out of sync: There has never been one issue causing of all of the dysncs. Hence why there has been a dysnc fix every patch. Because each time that they introduce new code (with DLC) there is the probability that the code could cause a disconnect. I remember most disconnects where fixed, if I was to pull a random statistic based on forum posts I’d say pre-Yapyap the disconnects 90% fixed. After Yapyap got added dysncs increased, and shortly after Yappers came ATN was released just compounding the issue. TL;DR there are many different causes of disconnects over HW2 lifetime, new code often causes another as soon as one is fixed.
  3. Communication: It is there a plenty if you know where to look. Halo Community Updates, updates posted by team members, they’re really all over the place. Just becuase Ske7ch isn’t posting doesn’t mean there is no communication coming from 343.
  4. Prioritizing DLC: I would never say that DLC has been prioritized over basic functionality. This game has been more than playable on Xbox for more than 6 months, there are ups and downs, but the game has never been “broken” technically speaking. As for prioritizing DLC, if you had your publisher who has the power to terminate your contract AND easily enraged fans breathing down your neck to release it monthly then you would dedicate more resources to that too.
  5. There is no easy way to distinguish a server disconnect from a player quitting, there is no easy way to separate the two in terms of judging rank.

Because new DLCs bring in new money while fixing basic functionality don’t. That’s what you get for not selling the game in a subscription model like WoW.

Well, I just have to disagree with you then. There isn’t a point youve made that I can sympthaize, understand, or agree with. Just understand, I do love this game and play it frequently. The only reason I bring this up at all is because I want to make the game better for everyone. It’s frustrating due to the feeling that the forums seem to be little more than screaming into the void. Many players have flocked away from the game due to the issues i and many others have brought up. You can rationalize or defend them all you want, but we both know that 343 isn’t guilt free. I just hope that when and if a sequel or another DLC season comes along, it’s manged much better than this. I’ve never had my enjoyment, nor seen a player base so poorly impacted by pure managerial/connectivity factors. That’s all I have to say.

Most games prioritize server connectivity and online play functions over DLC so that more people will stick around to purchase said DLC. I guarantee you this game would’ve done a lot better commercially if it didn’t turn away so many thanks to entire seasons of imbalanced gameplay and connectivity issues. More active players equals more DLC, regardless of subscription services or not.

I’m confused, outside of my assumptions around DLC prioritization I’ve stated have been objective statements. You can’t disagree with facts.

If I may, what do you mean by “screaming into the void”? There are many active discussions here on the forums.

Second post because of characters limit:

Most of what I have shared is objective, you can’t rationalize objectivity.

First to clarify I am no pro, far from it. Last game I played was around two weeks ago due to me being out of town and to busy. That also being said I do not have the authority to say your opinion sucks and mine is better. So please take everything I say with a little common sense. Now onto your regularly scheduled post.

Is this post about the imbalances and mechanics of the game itself or is it about the connection issues? If we’re being honest I have hard time comprehending what I read especially if it was long so I’m going to cover both, sorry if one or the other is irrelevant. If one or more of the topics are irreverent then just ignore those topics. Thanks for your time and NOW on to my response.

Ok I don’t know about about anyone but the game is in a pretty balanced state right now. Everything seems at least semi-viable and not one leader is out right OP. In comparison Voridus is OP but I say that loosely as he is easily counterable and the only reason he is considered OP is the two-minute goo lasting on the ground. So I don’t know why people keep complaining that the game is broken balanced wise. Now as for ranked I can’t have an opinion. I’m ranked in 3v3 blitz as a platinum 4 but I haven’t played much recently and since it’s only platinum 4 I don’t lose too much rank whenever I lose as compared to higher ranked people. But next is connection issues, and I hate it when people complain about it and most of all blame 343 for it. Now I’m sorry if it seems like I’m singling you out for saying that the connection is bad but I’m not. But I’ve seen countless post talking about how the game is going to keel over and die from disconnects and it’s all 343’s fault. But as someone already mentioned for one it isn’t their fault. As compared to other companies I’m actually quite surprised that we’re getting updates and patches as often as we are. With a team as small as that I’d expect updates rarely yet here they are making it look easy. But second is what connection issues? Granted I haven’t played in two weeks but in the time I did play I had no connection problems. I maybe had the occasional teammate quit mid way through match but I just assumed they got bored and left and even in most of those games I was still able to pull out a win. 343 has already addressed the connection issues a long time ago and there’s no reason to constantly keep putting up more new threads saying the same thing over and over again. It’s even gotten to the point(Not talking about you BTW) where people are creating more accounts because their first one got banned over spamming topics that weren’t needed, and typically those topics were long written rants about how 343 sucks and they could somehow do it better. Go back through my post history and you’ll find some I’ve commented on or just scroll to like a month ago. But I don’t understand why people do it. It’s one thing if you have an open NAT type, wired internet, a whole router and internet connection dedicated to your xbox, and your still experiencing issues. But even me who has a mediocre connection and a strict NAT type still has no problem with connection. Also on the topic of this why do people complain about having to re-download the game every update. I have mine set to update automatically when it’s off so when I come to play I don’t have to deal with this, so why not do that instead of complain about it on threads the devs are likely never going to see? Sorry if it seemed I got a bit personal about this but I just hate it when people hate on 343, they are trying their best with the funds they have and having to please the people who play the game all while having a ridiculously small team. So give them some credit. Sorry if it seemed I am talking about you, I’m talking to everyone who does this. It’s definitely not just you. But hey who knows. I could just be a 343 fanboy who’s opinion is worthless compared to everyone else’s for some unspoken reason. Who know’s?

You’re being very defensive, which isn’t good thing. But in all of your little tangent, you have not addressed anything other than “shut up because they won’t do anything anyway”. Which is kinda the point. They don’t seem to care.

Among users, yes. The devs stay completely out of everything. The only notice we get when things are changing or that they’ve addressed something until hours before a patch. There’s 0 dev feedback. Am doing I disagreed with how your framing the issues. You make it seem like 343 is doing everything right and that it’s just a perfect storm that makes it seem like they’re the victims of coincidence.
