I just played Halo 3 again (nostalgia much…) and watched the legendary ending, and realised Foward unto dawn is perfectly fine as it floats towards the mysterious planet/construct/installition/dyson sphere/whatever, and suddenly thought, why is it being so heavily destroyed in the Halo 4 trailer…
My first thought was obviously as it is entering atmosphere it is being broken up, but then i thought about it some more and it doesnt look like it. its moving too slowly and isnt burning up etc when we see it from the outside.
The level of destruction occuring looks more like it is under attack… Though we dont see anything from the outside, i dont think this completely rules out the possibility that perhaps sentinals, or other self defense measures have been sent up from “ground” to destroy this unidentified ship entering the atmosphere, regarding it as a potential threat.
Being a Halo game, no doubt the first level will be semi slow, and have a tutorial-esque segment especially to introduce new players to the game, so perhaps chief is about to be captured by whatevers destroying the ship (perhaps forerunners?) and either allies with them or escapes, allowing for said tutorial-esque level to take place…
I for one think this would be amazing, straight into the action with the immediate reveal of forerunners, leaving later levels to introduce something else…
> Yeah, and it’s in space, so why is there so much fire? D:
Ha ha, like at the beginning of Revenge of the Sith when the ship’s breaking up, then Obi-Wan says “we’re entering the atmosphere!” If they weren’t already in the atmosphere, why was the ship falling apart?
Anyway back to the topic, I don’t see a problem with the amount of destruction. First of all, the ship’s entering the atmosphere in an uncontrolled decent plus it would have no heat shields or anything up. So that for one would probably do some massive damage on it. Secondly, it’s really not in that great of shape to begin with. The whole front half of the ship’s been teleported away, so it’s probably in a lot worse shape than it looks like.

I did this thread months ago and I just got “the trailer isn’t canon” as answer, maybe you have more luck

My best bet is that the planet (being as big as it is) has enough mass and has collected remnants of an atmosphere around it. When the FuD got close, it started burning up.
As to the actual internal explosions and bangs - Michael Bay style - I would guess that it was only for aesthetics and isn’t canon.
Well, it’s entering atmosphere, so it would be burning up somewhat, and it has no protection up, it’s cut in half, so a lot of it is exposed, possibly including the fusion reactors, though that may make an even bigger explosion…

I just want to point out that is has been five years since the Chief went into Cryo. We already know that something happened on board that ship that altered his armor, most likely the UNSC. However, he seems to be alone there when he wakes up. It’s my theory that the guys working on him fled as the wreckage came under attack, leaving half a burning frigate behind.
My guess is that essentially the ship is being drawn towards said giant Forerunner structure (which I still totally think could/should be Unicron btw), via some sort of directional gravitational force.
i.e. A tractor-beam.
If we assume that parts of the ship were damaged during the slip-space jump, then that could account for pieces flying everywhere. Damaged doors to rooms full of combustable air could be ripped off and other things being ripped off could provide the ignition to combust these gases I suppose?? Or maybe there’s an emergency O2 supply for life support that’s routed throughout the ship tht’s been ruptured and is venting.
Long story short, nobody really knows. But this to me seems like the most likely explanation, and I’m standing by it.
