Why is the Halo community so toxic?

I’ve never seen a community this toxic before, I’ve played lots of online games, they all have their share of toxic players but Halo, wow… Here, reddit, YouTube and Facebook comments, twitch, they’re so entitled and “purists”, they also like to pm you using homophobic, sexist or racist insults… Don’t they realize that elitism is what kills games?

Edit: is there like an actual reason? I’ve never seen something as bad as with Halo, honestly is worth researching this phenomenon.

I’m sorry you’ve experienced that within the community. Not everyone is gonna agree with everything you say in a large community, but what you’ve described is nothing sorry of harassment. You don’t deserve that. No one does. Hope not everyone in this community treats you poorly.

Well what you see on Waypoint/Reddit/twitter is only a very small amount of the overall playerbase.

That being said in some ways its deserved. 343i screwed up with 4/5 and are still trying to put the flames down for Infinite. They make trash games over and over again and so what was once a forum filled to the brim with 343i fanboys is now a cesspool of visceral and contempt.

I know the abusive relationship thing is often used for Halo, but it is not inaccurate to say that Halo fans have been getting screwed over for about a decade.

As someone who was very active on Bungie dot net during Halo 2 and Halo 3, I actually think the Halo community is less toxic than back then. But, then again, the internet and social media has grown since then, so critics are likely more comfortable to say whatever trash they come up with… So maybe they aren’t.

Halowaypoint doesn’t seem that toxic to be honest. Just a few fights over the monetization model.

Yoooo I don’t KNOOOOOW it’s REALLY bad lmao.

Fully expecting someone to send certain statistics to me once they wise up on my avatar’s background, eventually. Like, it’s gotten really bad around here.

Humanity is toxic. We murder each other in droves over borders and resources. Arguing over a video game is mild in comparison. Regardless, I agree about receiving stupid personal attacks is stupid.

I mean humans are out here begging to get sick to spite certain people

Speech =/ action. It MAY precede action, but it is still not actually committing a crime against a person.

The iconic toxicity that is the Halo Community is mostly because of constant abuse of immature in-game conduct (Teabagging, overkilling, and fisticuffing) via toxic players among underage children who badmouth others 24/7 without mercy or any proper adult supervision, along with the constant flame wars and new-school vs old-school garbage on the forums no matter where they are (here or Reddit).

Every time I post something on the forums or play online, no matter how polite I am or even caring how I play online, I always get violently blasted to hell by some online jerk who loves to bully others all because of their “superiority” and “high rank” among other such foul behaviors.

Welcome to online video games, where no matter what you do you will always be treated like !@#$ no matter what the hell you do all because everyone is entitled to be vile to others without fear of retaliations or any form of punishment.

Any gaming community has the propensity to be toxic, and Halo being a very old and long lasting community has all sorts of players within it, so naturally the amount of toxicity is high.

We’re also a community which grew up with people yelling at us about our Mothers over the VC so… eh.
By the way, thank the lords this isn’t 2007. Ohhhhh boy, it was much, much worse back then.

While I agree with the rest of your post, I don’t believe people should be physically punished for being an -Yoink!-. They’re probably already an -Yoink!- anyways because their life is crap in one way or another(not excusing it).

I’ve been on the internet with VC since the early 2000’s, it’s definitely not new for people who play video games, a childlike hobby, to act like children. (Again, not an excuse, just not surprising)

How come every forum thinks it’s players are the only toxic ones out there? It’s every game nowadays.

It’s the internet and humanity in general

… and yet I always ask the same question; “Who really is the responsible adult in this?”

I actually said the opposite, I’ve played lots of online games and I’ve seen toxicity everywhere, that’s true but never as much as within Halo or its different forums.

The word “toxic” is an exaggeration because the CoD community is 100% proof of that.

Not really it’s just more people are playing and kids are afraid of getting communication bans if the ban system was like the days of the 360/ps3 era you would still see roast lobbies to this day

I guess you never met a Star Wars fan :joy:

People like to criticize other peoples art works. It’s been like this since the stone ages :sauropod:

Just block, report and move on.

Most people are fine, it’s just the randoms with mics that are usually the problem. There’s a reason they have to solo queue.

There’s some friendly clubs/groups to join.

Every community has its players that are going to talk smack so for anyone to say Halo community is the worst is 100% BS. Just pointing out facts here, and it’s most likely just the OP looking for attention.

Seriously, the OP said he plays other games. What, he doesn’t know how to use the mute option or any other tools provided by the developers?
