In the Legendary Ending of Halo 3, the half of the Frigate that 117 is on is not on fire or blowing up so why is it doing that in the teaser trailer? How could it start blowing up just because it’s floating towards the planet?
Is it entering the atmosphere?

It would be a little convenient if the frigate just happened to float towards that big bright gateway instead of, say, the other 99.lots of 9’s % of the structure.
No, more like it’s being pulled in and as only half a ship it’s not faring well. Hence the fire and explosions as what’s left is being pulled apart.
The gravity from the Dyson Sphere may be shredding the ship apart, which combusts all the flammable stuff aboard. And it looks dramatic, of course.

Yeah, I guess you’re right.

However, the question still remains why the UNSC packed the hull tight with C4 and gasoline. You would think that a deactivated fusion engine would be a little less reactive.

Well, surely something survives. Master Chief is in a Warthog, and if the UNSC hasn’t found them yet via Cortana’s beacon, then the Warthog had to be the one that Chief drove in there in Halo 3 or one already on board, so something has to make it through the explosions.
That, or this is Onyx…

Haha, I didn’t mean ALL the flammable objects, just whatever was convenient for dramatization in the trailer. I have no idea WHAT is so combustible, but they must have a no-smoking rule on those ships for a reason…
> Is it entering the atmosphere?
This is the obvious answer.
Highly explosive ammunition, warthog and other vehicles, cry chambers and what ever else is stored in the ship. It might also have been pulled towards the object at high speed, and now that it’s slowed down, the friction has caused the fire/heat.
