Why is the AR so iconic to Halo?

The covers of every Halo game (except Halo 2, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo: Anniversary) all feature Master Chief (or the other Spartans in Halo Wars) in an epic pose with the Assault Rifle. But I must ask, why? Why the Assault Rifle?

I’ve had many great memories with the AR, in fact, it was my first gun to ever use in a video-game. I still use it for my style of play (Close-Quarters) and because I just love the look, sound, and feel of when I’m using the AR. However, after Combat Evolved, the AR has become a laughing stock by many.

Go around with an AR in Halo 3, or Halo: Reach, players will laugh at how you are using such an inferior gun that according to them, takes “no skill to use” because it’s an automatic. However, the AR takes A LOT of skill to use because it is so inferior to other weapons and even loses to guns in it’s optimal range. I have lost to so many fights at close-range in Halo 4 with an AR against a DMR. Sure, 343 actually made the AR useful (like in CE) and I can’t help but smile and nod in approval. But they made the DMR so powerful it can beat AR in deep CQ Combat -_-

Halo is mainly a precision weapon game, according to many. So why is it that Master Chief is always seen using the AR on the covers of his games?

Master Chief uses an AR because he is too cool for the aim-assist that comes with a DMR.

I love the AR, makes me feel like a real SPARTAN

> Master Chief uses an AR because he is too cool for the aim-assist that comes with a DMR.

Hahaha good one!

It’s the go-to for newcomers. The AR is the most basic weapon there is, nothing gimmicky or demanding about it. When you start playing MM for he first time, the first gun you’ll use is the AR. When you first play campaign, almost always (except for Halo 2 and ODST) the first weapon you get is the AR. That paired with its awesome design has probably made it the first weapon the average gamer associates with Halo, even if a more competitive player will think of something like the BR.

Its the rifle that fits better to Master Chief , they returned it on Halo 3 because it fits perfect for him .
I love the AR , but with 60 rounds lol

It’s a standard rifle in most video games the main character will use an Assault Rifle. I mean besides the pistol they give you the second weapon you always get in Halo is an Assault Rifle. Most Marines you come across are using the Assault Rifle. And let’s be serious I think it wouldn’t look right holding a precision weapon in the main cover. The DMR is kind of long, the BR for a precision weapon is short. The AR is just right.

Its the main weapon in Halo.

And it looks awesome when Chief holds it.

When I first started playing Halo, that was my weapon I ever used.

True, I guess. I agree with you.

However, most of Noble Team on Halo: Reach is holding a precision weapon. Doesn’t look too shabby.

The Assault Rifle was never useful in CE…I don’t know what you’re talking about. If you played multiplayer with that thing…You didn’t last very long, period. If anything, the Assault Rifle was more useful in Halo 3 or Reach, more so than CE. As for your other points, they’re mostly opinion, which you are entitled to.

Noble team wasn’t your UNSC standard, they were all specialized even Jorge was holding a Machine Gun Turret and Emile a shotgun

The MA5 is the UNSC’s workhorse rifle.

You’re kidding, right? Back in CE, the MA5 was actually something more than a pathetic peashooter that you only held onto until you picked up something better. It had a purpose. Kudos to 343 for returning the AR to it’s former glory.

Multiplayer and campaign are two different things with two different playstyles.

With campaign the AR is pretty much a utility weapon; ammo is plentiful, it does good damage, and you’ll never feel vulnerable with it.

He should always have held a BR.

The AR… just no.

Yes, I agree.

That was not the case in Reach Heroic/Legendary campaign.

So you said EVERY Halo game except for HALF of the Halo games…

> So you said EVERY Halo game except for HALF of the Halo games…

Halo CE - Assault Rifle
Halo 3 - Assault Rifle
Halo Wars - Assault Rifle
Halo 4 - Assault Rifle

Halo 2 - SMG, automatic. No AR in the game.
Halo 3: ODST - SMG is on cover.
Halo: Reach - Yep, no AR on the cover. However, there is no Master Chief.
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary - 343 for some reason, decided to replace the AR with the CE pistol on it’s cover.

But all of the Halo games that are not side-projects except Halo 2 have the AR on their covers.

> That was not the case in Reach Heroic/Legendary campaign.

Reach’s Assault Rifle in general was a big letdown.

> Halo 3: ODST - No AR in the game.

It may not have been on the cover but the MA5C was quite plentiful and very useful in that one.
