Why is the AR a suckish gun?

The DMR is better even at point blank range, and the pistol dominates it. I feel like I’m the only one in some games that still uses it. That’s why whenever people actually vote for normal slayer and not DMR slayer I have a chance.

It has been bad for 10+ years. It is just a simple weapon for new players.

Think of the AR as a SMG with medium range capability. As in using it as a SMG primarily but you can also pace your shots for longer range damage.

The AR is not just for new players, I use an AR most of the time, I just love that gun. Wish 343i would do a slight buff for it.

They really need to innovate on Halos niche weapons most notably the AR to give them new uses and versatility or they need to introduce new weapons to the Sandbox will be viable at all levels of gameplay.

its a good starting weapon that does the job untill something better comes along

While I don’t think it should be guaranteed to lose in its niche, there is a good reason as to why this gun’s a starting weapon. It really enforces the concepts of niche weapons and power weapons. It’s been proven that people will want to pick up a different gun if their current one is bad. And that, well, that’s original Halo gameplay.

It doesn’t need a buff at all. The magnetism on it is so huge that it takes more skill to miss with the AR.

They should make it a little better for H4.

The biggest problem is that most of the community has no idea how to use the weapon. You can’t just hold down the trigger and expect to kill someone (unless you are practically licking their faceplate). You have to fire in short but quick bursts. Go into a custom game by yourself and look at a wall. Find a spot to aim at and hold the trigger down and see how many bullets actually hit where you were aiming. Then pick a different spot out and use quick pulls of the trigger to send bursts at your target and see how more accurate it is to burst fire as opposed to just holding the trigger down.

^this.

The only thing that requires skill/effort with the AR is knowing when to burst and go full auto.

I think it’s fine the way it is, It just needs to replace the magnum in ZB as a secondary.

Anyone with half a brain can beat a DMR with an AR in a close range battle in any non TU playlist.

Lol AR, you cant be serious right?

I think of the ar as training wheels for new halo players. Once they’re good enough, they move in to precision weapons. The assault rifle should only beat the dmr user, if the dmr user takes 6 shot or more. That’s how I’d like it.

> its a good starting weapon that does the job untill something better comes along

Not really. The magnum is a much better choice, even at close range. Four quick shots and a melee attack and your opponent is dead. And I don’t have to mention the joys of the five shot.

Finnaly, someone gets it.

Then dont use it?..

The kill time is slow, I can kill someone faster with the plasma repeater at the same range, which shouldn’t happen, and the bullet magnetism isn’t as large as you describe, I should know, the AR has been my main weapon in all the halo games, except H2, in which I used the SMG.

I just wish devs wouldn’t use the AR as an excuse to keep making the Plasma Rifle suck so bad. Halo CE’s Plasma Rifle was a weapon that could stand on it’s own two feet. Noone cared that it was the AR equivalent, travel time gave it a wide skill gap. AND it dealt extra headshot damage to shieldless opponents.

The AR should be the only easy-to-use weapon that is weaker than most in a skilled players’ hands, but easier to kill with for an unskilled player.

It was good in Halo 1. Ever since it sucked unless in FF and CP.
