Why is Reach so popular?

I won’t lie, I was less than impressed with Halo: Reach’s campaign and characters. Sure, it had some interesting environments and situations, but I felt next to nothing for anything that was going on in the game, and it didn’t feel a lot like “Halo” to me (which is how I’ve felt about most games post-Halo 3).

So this makes me wonder: What exactly is it that so many fans love about Reach? Is it the campaign, or matchmaking? Gameplay? As an extension of this question, what about Reach do you, the fans of the game, like least about it? It would be interesting to hear.

Because of its emmense custom games and solid multiplayer.

Campaign was fun, but I never play it anymore. What keeps me coming back is the multiplayer. Very easy to get a game in a lot of types. Slayer, BTB, Infection, and Grifball all load in a minute or less.

What I like least about Reach is that more people don’t have the DLC maps. I wouldn’t mind if they were made free. I get to play one every 50 games or so.

Lucky you, haven’t played a dlc map other than in custom games in over a year now. Although I don’t play as regularly as I used to.

Let’s just put it this way.

Multiplayer wise - if they took the best from Halo 5 and the best from Halo Reach - it would be the best Halo game ever.

Because halo reach is ballin

Halo 3 was too stiff and virtually unplayable in my opinion. Halo Reach brought the right type of map flow and customization that makes it worth playing to this day.

It’s liek asking why is Halo 3 or 2 is popular. Cause it’s a friken classic! It’s awesome! The old days!

Before people wanted money and started to be lazy

I think it was that Halo: Reach had something for everyone. Being able to carry your Spartan between the three major game modes, the wealth of custom game options in multiplayer and Firefight, and the great armor customization which puts Halo 4 and Halo 5 to shame.

Its as it was Bungie’s last Halo game, a sovenir perhaps.

Halo Reach was a Hybrid. I enjoyed the Campaign, and it was an interesting way to lead into CE. It had modern and classic elements blended to the point of near perfection, and the multiplayer is so fun. Physics, weapons, abilities, environments, and Assasinations

nothing more to say

Great armour unlock and customisation system
-That was persistent through all the game modes
Online, Split Screen and LAN support
-That was persistent through all the game modes
Great UI and party system
-That was persistent through all the game modes
Campaign, Firefight (PvE) MM (PvP) and customs
-three of which are available online and offline
-All modes allowed players to stay together and experience the modes together
The most advanced Forge, Theatre and File share for Halo at the time
Full set of varied playlists
Full set of varied gametypes

All these have enabled Reach’s community to stay active. Players could play what they wanted, when and how they wanted and not be missing out on part of the experience. They could create their own experiences, and even share those.

It was a game that supported the community, so the community supported it.

The GUI and ranking system is probably the best in the whole Halo series in my opinion, and personally I cannot fault the campaign, it’s always fun to play.

I have played reach for countless hours i enjoyed the campaign but the multiplayer is amazing i had so much fun playing with friends
also with the awesome forge abilities some epic custom maps were created so that made some custom games fun as hell
the armour system was done perfectly too and also the armour effects were a nice addition

It’s not popular, just with H5, most of the new fanbase is saying Reach is amazing.
I was with it since day one. Why else would I pre-order it?
Most of the people that ‘like’ reach are just followers.
Like I said, it’s not popular.
Haven’t you seen the player count?
Three thousand. Most of the people that ‘like’ it most likely don’t even play it.
G’bye.

I don’t feel like your argument, in the way you’ve come to the conclusion, is valid.

You are using the population of a 6 year old game to determine how popular the game is. And you are also assuming that most of it’s fans are “new followers”. Halo Reach enjoyed a huge population, bigger than both Halo 4 and 5. Not as big as Halo 2 or 3, but it was big enough to have players of its own that didn’t stick around for either H4 or H5. I think it’s also fair to say that we weren’t limiting ourselves to measuring the game’s popularity just by who plays it today, but those who rate it as a good game based on their experiences.

I missed this question first time around so here.

I hate;
Bloom
AAs by default
weapons being stronger against vehicles
‘Arena’ instead of standard ranked playlists a 'la Halo 2/3
slightly slower movement speed
The health system
Lack of clan system
lack of 1080p/60fps and/ lower than 30fps on Xbone

Though I admit the last two are more nit picking. Still, I think Reach would be a better game with the those changes.

I kinda agree about how the campaign didn’t really feel like the original Halo’s, but I still really liked the campaign personally. The real reason I think it is so popular though would definitely have to be the forge and custom games. I’ve had endless hours of fun playing custom games on Reach and honestly have never gotten tired of playing them.

The campaign was decent, and the art style was great, but I think it was also largely because of the gameplay. With Reach, it went back to a Halo CE style, in a way, while also taking newer elements are reinventing them. The reworked set of weapons, the armor abilities, the new vehicles, great new maps, and all the other neat features were all great. In addition to this, the match making remained great, we got challenges, and best of all, Firefight. The covenant had some changes and additions as well, making for more interesting battles, and overall, the gameplay was very smooth, and resulted in alot of awesome moments.
Overall, Reach is among my favorite Halos, but I suppose it is a matter of opinion.
