Seriously this really bugs me, in Nightfall his go to weapon seems to be the DMR, so why on the cover art is he holding a BR? Surely he would prefer to stick with his usually weapons, or are Spartans trained with the BR for some reason. Really annoys me, I just don’t like the BR colour, I really hope they change it to a darker grey and maybe blue secondary variant with ONI stamped on the side.
EDIT: However I do love the BR as my go to close range weapon.
Maybe he was feeling kind of BR that day.
Spartans use what they have on hand, they are experts with all weapons. Maybe a BR was the only thing around when he grabbed a gun.
Because it’s a better weapon?
Sigh Its called military arsenal! Its unrealistic to assume that soldiers are bound to one weapon for life.
Maybe it’s a customized BR that was meant only for him. Now that he’s a Spartan.
It doesn’t really matter IMO. He’s a specialized agent, and and can carry whatever he wants. Preferences are preferences.
he also used a pistol and assault rifle in nightfall teaser, spartans are masters of all weapons ( unless there is a noob playing ) and BRs are better lets admit it, H4s BR was the best and OP
The art people probably decided a BR looked better for the shot.
Well. Maybe he picked up a new gun. X button, you know?
Why does Master Chief have duel SMGs in Halo 2?
Seriously dude, this is really nitpicky.

Nitpicking is about to get real… If this takes place between Halo 4 & 5. Why is he holding the older model BR.
It could be an enumerable amount of reasons… ranging from lazy artist to “Locke picked up a different gun”. I mean JOHNSON had a Battle rifle prototype at harvest sooo…
Because the DMR sucks and the BR is awesome.

Ha, funny.
But realistically if the art team wanted him to look badass he should of been holding a knife in one hand and a magnum in the other. Or as previously done dual wielding two suppressed and scoped SMGs, however this would create confusion as to whether dual wielding is in Halo 5. Which as we know has been confirmed as not being present.
May be with the three bullet to one bullet ratio may be he wanted more bullets hitting his targets.
Why is Master Chief holding an AR in Halo 3 instead of dual SMGs? Why does the Arbiter start with a Carbine in Halo 3 instead of an Energy Sword in the first level of co-op? Why does the Didact have orange lights instead of blue?
Any trained military personnel will have use of more than one weapon, and will switch things up depending on the situation. Sometimes, the artists do so just for the sake of making things look cool. At other times, it’s for an actual strategical reason. When you play as Locke, you’ll obviously be using more than the DMR, right? So what’s the difference?
Maybe it’s because he’s an MLG pro, so he originally found himself using the Halo 4 DMR, but then when it got nerfed, he began using the BR just like all other Halo 4 competitive players.
