Why is local modding (customs) outlawed?

Can anyone give me a logical answer?

None of these could be used in matchmaking so why is it such a problem to put them in a fileshare and let everyone enjoy them? Perhaps because it’s a console based series? I really don’t understand how any of those are detrimental to the game. Maybe Halo 4 will be more lenient.

It is probably easier to restrict modding altogether than try and restrict it to custom games.

Well it doesn’t really work because people still hack- look at this swat video!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oV7SMFoYO4Y

As fun as mods are (Look at skyrim for instance) mod support will never happen on a console. If it was on a PC it might happen but not on the 360.

On another note: I would love a Halo 4 PC port!

Lol, those are 1 in 10,000 if not more and they get banned in hours. I’d say that is “working.”

Halo 4 on the PC would be amazing. The 360 is so underpowered and the console community as a whole kind of sucks.

It’s not the fact that it’s 343 not wanting to have mods, its the fact that everyone would have to Jtag their xbox in order for it to work. Not everyone would want/know how to do it, and it’s no easy process either. Console mods aren’t as easy to use as just downloading a custom games map.

It opens up modding for people who want to just mess around in Customs and people who think it would be fun to take that into Matchmaking. IT basically just opens up a gateway for people who do indeed want to cause havoc online. Thus making is harder for 343i to stop the modders and furthermore, becoming MW2.

I wish my odds of finding hackers were that low, for me its more like 1 in 200.
And no, they don’t get banned. Bungies banhammer from halo 3 never seemed to make it to reach. 343 are too lazy to do it.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

You do not get people using mods anywhere close to 1 in 200 games.

lol, that modder in the linked video got banned in 9 games.

It’s because it’s easier to outlaw modding altogether rather than take the time and effort to make exceptions for every single different case.

Modding needs a Jtag or some sort. You can’t just download it.

Allowing mods in specific cases would complicate, or perhaps even render impossible, the auto-detection that Microsoft uses to ban users with modified consoles.

It’s my understanding that to selectively allow mods, the LIVE servers would essentially have to allow games to send a message that says, “Hey, servers, you can ignore mods on this console. The user isn’t playing a game mode where mods would be bad.” The problem with doing that is that a modder can then mod the part of the game that sends out that message, essentially forcing the game to lie on demand. If the thing being modded isn’t directly and comprehensively tracked by the game servers, then the servers have no way to know whether the “ignore mods” signal is a lie; they have to blindly trust the client, when the client isn’t trustworthy.

This may not be the case for content mods if Microsoft implements some sort of official distribution and support system – if they take what Bungie’s done for map variants and gametypes, and do that for fully-fledged maps and custom weapons and the like. Anything that isn’t an official part of the game, however, has to be blocked, because allowing it in any situation creates a loophole that malicious players can exploit.

(If you’d like a metaphor, imagine a group of space aliens. Half of them are evil; the other half are nice. The only way to know which aliens are nice is to ask your friend John, but John might be being mind-controlled by the bad aliens. Should you risk it, or should you avoid the whole group?)

Bear in mind that this is all speculation and not proven fact.

Thanks for stealing my thread.

The same reason Diablo 3 is online only.

We just don’t need it

Because Consoles like the Xbox 360 have a Terms of Use and Conduct that specifically state you cannot alter, change, or manipulate a game’s code.

By violating said Terms you void the contract, thus restricting your ability to play online. It’s not any one developer’s choice.

exactly. if its in customs, theres no real harm to gameplay.

Anything downloaded onto your xbox console has to be ok’d by microsoft first. With how flexible xbox live can be, they’re really -Yoinks!- when it comes to how they let people use it.
