Why is it so dark?

Okay so I decided to play through halo 2 today and on levels such as Quarantine Zone, Gravemind and High Charity its really hard to see where i’m going, now I know that those levels are supposed to be dark but even when I turn my flashlight on it barely does anything, and even on levels such as uprising and Cairo Station its quite hard to see the enemies at a distance.

My t.v has its brightness all the way up and there doesn’t seem to be any way of changing the games brightness itself, could it be that i’m using the 360? I don’t remember it being this dark on the original, or even when playing on the 360 before?

Is this normal or is there something wrong?

Compatibility is extremely bad for the original Xbox games on the 360, more noticeable on Halo 2.

Although I’ve never had my screen get so dark that even the flashlight was useless.

The only time I can see it working on those levels is when I walk strait up to a wall.

Might be the tv, but I’m not sure about that. I’d say get a new one, but really what would the point be of buying a new tv for just this.

Halo 2 is meant to be played in the dark. Meaning the only light source should be the T.V.

The reason it looks “dark” is because of glare. For some reason Halo 2 is a game that is susceptible to glare more so than other games. For example when I turned the flash light on in the game I saw very little difference as well until I turned the lights out and shut the blinds. I could see everything and it was no longer dark. The flash light also worked a lot better.

i Have The Same problem on Multiplaer thow i was playing LAN With about 16 players and we noticed Lockout looked darker is my Disc broken and can i still get the updates for halo 2 Just Wondering

Every time I play, I usually have to turn the brightness of my TV up a bit. It’s not quite that bad, but it does get really dark for some reason.

Ah well it seems that it is quite normal to be quite dark then, well anyway thanks for the help guys.

Halo 2 is a very dark game. The general atmosphere is one of darkness, fear, chaos, and hopelessness.

Try cranking up your contrast, not just brightness, especially if your TV is an LCD, since they have poor static contrast.

If your screen isn’t an LCD, you’ll definitely want a reasonably dim room with harsh glare sources (unshaded windows letting outdoor light in, really bright lights in front of the screen) minimized; LCDs can handle brighter rooms than other types of displays, though you still might want to put a little effort into minimizing harsh glare.

If all else fails, consider going into the video options of your TV and look for contrast-adjusting video processing options, though this could potentially add input lag.

I think the most probable thing it could be is the glare but i’m not too sure… and i’ve tried cranking up the contrast and it only makes a slight difference, and im not too sure i want to try the contrast-adjusting video processing options.

some LCD screens also have a “Blackness” setting might sound strange but turn that up. I remember playing a custom map on halo that on my tv (Ancient box tv, not rally sure what to call it) was fine. but on my friends HDtv it was so dark you couldn’t see your way out of the first room contrast/brightness helped a little then we saw a “Blackness” setting which we turned up and suddenly we can see again.

It does not have this setting.

So, what options ARE available in your TV’s advanced video settings?

oddly enough, whenever I turn up the brightness on my TV, it usually goes back to it’s original setting after 15-30 minutes of playing halo 2. this is the only game that it happens in.
