Why is it called "strafing"?

I’m curious as to why pro gamers call side-to-side movement “strafing”. As a wanna-be pilot to me that word means engaging ground forces from an airplane. I can’t find any other definition. Thoughts?

Look it up in urban dictionary. You can find the definition there.

It comes from the doom/wolfenstein 3D era of gaming in reference to side to side movement. Circles strafing in particular where you would circle around a tougher enemy shooting them.

Oh, so you’re basically flying around in circles shooting something. That makes sense. I never thought this meaning of the word was as old as FPS itself.

From the Urban Dictionary:

Strafing
For partners to continuously keep touching each others bodies for a short sexual pleasure

The teacher caught them strafing in the class.

Yeah, I think the book that came with my shareware (Does that term even exist anymore?) copy of Doom had instructions on strafing.

That is something I never expected to read on a Halo forum.

LoL no. Here is what it is guess I should have said drop the “ing”

From (urban dictionary)
strafe
To move sideways, usually for the purpose of dodging. A term generally used by FPS games.
Strafe to avoid getting hit by enemy fire.

Im still try to get good at strafing.

Yep. Somebody get the brain bleach.

It’s called strafing because that’s what it is. Like in football a linebacker can be strafing, or shuffling horizontally.

That is a really good example. I’ve always characterized it as a misnomer…more accurately, it should just be side-stepping. But strafing sounds way better than side-stepping.
