After finishing the campaign, I like Halo 5 overall.
I am glad that I paid only a fraction of the game’s price though. Lack of couch co-op and the REQ/microtransaction system are terrible design choices that I don’t support. From what I gather, though, these won’t be issues with Infinity?
I play Halo mostly for campaign. I found Halo 5 very entertaining!
Seems a lot of people say the Halo 5 story was too heavily based on sources other than the games… I haven’t read any Halo books. I avoid reading wikis and such. I still didn’t find the story confusing. Got more than enough background info from the exposition in the campaign itself; playing all the games in MCC; and watching all terminals, shows, and movies. Halo 4 confused me more than 5 did, until I was finally able to watch all the terminals.
There is a bit of replay value for me. Will probably replay at least twice - once to find all the intel and once on higher difficulty with a friend (Real shame co-op has to be online! Shame on the studios for that!).
In my opinion, the quality of the story was good. The tropes used may be a bit tired, but this applies to all of Halo and I daresay most if not all of science fiction today. The story was written well enough that I found the campaign experience comparable to watching a better-than-average movie.
As for gameplay, only thing I really disliked was the couple missions where I couldn’t find any human ammo in the level. I like that pistol was so useful since it ended up being my main weapon. I like how tanky the Knights are, the changes in Hunter behavior and improvements in enemy AI overall, marking targets or locations for my fireteam, and how movement is important now.
I am probably easier to please than many Halo fans… I don’t play any other FPS games, so I am not bothered by their influence on Halo 5. Since I’ve only been into Halo for four-ish years and will probably never be an avid reader of Halo books, the changes made to characters and any retconning that may have occurred don’t bother me too much either.
Lasky and Roland are my favorite characters in Halo.
But I’m not THAT easy to please - don’t think that just any game would be good enough for me. I enjoy Dead Space and Halo, but other sci fi games I’ve tried don’t do it for me. Alien: Isolation seemed promising but that game was too stressful for me to play. I have been eyeing Moons Of Madness and will probably buy it if I catch it on sale… I prefer Trek to Wars. I love The Expanse and Star Trek: Picard but otherwise haven’t been too impressed by any sci fi shows since ST:TNG. Point is, I do have my own particular taste in science fiction.
In the end, I’m happy that Halo 5 did not ruin Halo for me. And I am very much looking forward to Infinity.
