Why is Halo 4 so off-canon visually 343?

This game is fantastic don’t get me wrong, but what really irritates me is why everything is changing visually all the time. Every Halo game, something is different.

Before people say: Oh it’s because their graphics are getting better ect… it doesn’t mean they have to completely re-design everything. The forward unto dawn and Mark 6 armour is the most appalling example i can think of in game, I don’t understand why 343 could not have taken the old models and retextured them to match Halo 4’s decal, that means they would have stayed how they were meant to be and not just magically evolved somehow.

The Mark 6 in Halo 4 isn’t the real Mark 6, do 343 just expect us to think oh well no you have to look back on Halo 2 & 3, ignore the design of the Mark 6 and mentally replace it with the one we’ve… pooped out with minimal regard of how it used to look. This also applies to the Dawn… Did cortana upgrade that as well whilst she was doing it to Chiefs armour with shcematics to the Mark 7 that according to the intro movie was made before the Mark 5. This is just the tip of the iceburger, I can talk about this all day if you need me too.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiigggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhtttttttttttttt.

“Don’t worry, change everything about how it all looks the fans won’t notice.”

Well we did notice, I feel so bad saying all this as your designers have been told to change the face of Halo.

How the Humans in Halo are supposed to look: Contemporty, bulky, tactical, dull, matt finished. Not overly and obviously futuristic, how we would make thinks look given that technology today.

How Halo 4 Human stuff looks

It’s a real bad shame I have to ignore these changes every Halo game.

343, Please for the love that is all Halo. Don’t change anything from this point on, we don’t care if you re-use models and textures. Just stop changing stuff, it really does ruin it for the people who take all these aspects into account.

I like the redesigns and the fact that the traditional Mark VI helmet’s still in the game. End of story. Bungie themselves evolved the character’s design so I don’t exactly have a problem with it.

The Foreward Unto Dawn is the only thing that really sticks out imo. I can deal with the updated Mk VI armor.

I have to agree on the Marine armor though. Those massive white helmets look kinda ridiculous. I think Reach’s Marines/Army where visually the most appealing since it was a nice blend of modern and futuristic looks.

There is a Marine armor in the game that looks like it though, it’s green and they wear balaclavas like the Halo Wars marines.

Also the intro to Halo 4 isn’t supposed to be “canon” so to speak, not aesthetically at least.

I know you don’t want to hear this but…

343i did some changes to things because they want it to be THEIR game. Bungie changed this as well from game to game. The big change is because of what I said earlier

I don’t just hate the re-designs of the models, I also hate the cartoonish in-game artstyle. The Spartans in war games look like plastic action figues. Everything is so shiny, glossy and bright. Where is the dark, gritty and atmospheric artstyle of the the original Halo: CE? It’s another major put-off of Halo 4 for me. How a game looks is really important, not in terms of how advanced the graphics are, but in the atmosphere they create. I’d rather look at Half Life 1’s graphics than Halo 4’s. I’d actually be really happy if Halo 4 was remade using the Half Life 1 engine and its color pallete.

I agree with everything you say OP apart from your view on the Humans, I believe humanity needs to change visually to match their new technological level. Weapons and all.

i prefer halo 4’s look

I don’t know why your making such a big fuss about forward unto dawn, you see the ship for like 20 minutes out of a 6-8 hour game.

And i thought chiefs new armour (which i also prefer) was changed using nano technology.

IMO OP Halo Reach got it 3/4 right. The armor in Halo reach was good and was very detailed, but the males lacked the body posture and muscle density that they Spartan 4s have in Halo 4, but apart from that they dot the Females right and a few other things right too. But in Halo 4 although the body posture and armor is alright, a lot of helmets and certain armor pieces do not look good at all. 343 were headed in the right direction, but it felt like they kinda lost their way half way trough. A lot of the armor looked messy and didn’t really fit together well and in some cases had bad details litter all over the armor that weren’t editable.

In Halo 4 the armor seemed to drift away from a good Halo styled combat skin type looked that was lost a little bit in Halo Reach. For Halo 5 343 should bring these things into the game for Spartan armor IMO. Number one: The Spartan Armor look itself. 343 Should adopt a more Combat-Skin type feel to the armor, that feels strong and very futuristic, that can also be put into 3 classes of combat skin. Light, Medium and Heavy for those who want to feel unique to their play style, but you could also add attachments the the armor to make it seem more common military like just like in Reach, this would be applicable to Males and Females. As far as the base-armor is concerned though, here are some pictures to give you an idea of what I am talking about, now although these pictures look like action figures, they are not, they were rendered in very high level 3D graphics software.

Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3, Picture 4, Picture 5 and Picture 6. That is what i’m talking about, but of course there would be many different variations of the armors as well, but I would want them all to come together nicely and not look so random and messy, Spartan armor is all about precision and strength, that and a whole load of other things is what separates the armor from standard ballistics and we’re also meant to believe that the engineers from time of the forerunners have had their hand in the design, so it should look very advanced from what the armor looks like currently.

Personally, visually I think quite a few things in Halo need to change and become more advanced and believable for the time frame that we are given. Hopefully in Halo 5, things will look much better and feel more advanced, for me aesthetics and detail in a game are very important, especially to create a wonderful and immersive experience for the player and ATM Halo has the chance to do that given the circumstances in the story, my only wish is that 343 utilizes this moment properly and brings an entirely fresh and beautiful feel to Halo 5 without making us feel that the game is no longer Halo, the Promethean Knights where a step in the right direction in some areas, but much more could have been done, but nonetheless, a wonderful first attempt from 343 and I hope we will get much more from them in the future. P.S sorry if I made some spelling errors, it’s quite late where I am.

EDIT: As far as Elite and Grunt models are concerned, I believe 343 should go back to a more classic feel Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3, Picture 4, but make the armor look more technical and make the flesh and skin textures of the two species more detailed and refined, to make something look alien does not necessarily mean make it look ugly, not by a long shot. Although I do understand that the only reason why the grunts and elites look they way they do is due to the fact that they are fighting the Storm Covenant, I don’t believe the should have changed as much as they did,'t they looked great don’t get me wrong, they just didn’t look as great as they did before, 343 should have developed their look along the lines of how they looked before.

In-game, instead of giving the Elites OP shielding and movement speed, 343 should have made them much more “intelligent”, for example, all elites should have roughly the same shielding on all difficulties, but as the difficulties do progress, the elites should react differently with their environment, I personally believe that oddly enough, Halo CE’s AI seemed the most intelligent in the way they moved (On the Elite’s behalf), they would duck and role, strafe and jump and it all seemed very intelligent and realistic even to this day, even down to they way the Elites spotted you and would let all the other units know you where present. In Halo 5 they should bring that back, but allow the AI to work with it’s environment much better like a mixture between Halo 1, 2 & 3.

And give elites hand held shields that could be dropped with weapon fire and delay their shield regen whilst in use, instead of giving them ridiculous amounts of shields and health. It would make the game much more enjoyable.

Somehow an edit turned into another post, or i clicked on the wrong thing

It was probably more due to 343i wanting to forge their own identity in the way they interpret the Halo universe.

Making carbon copies would have just led to accusations of them being unoriginal and copying Bungie’s designs. Like it or not, the current designs will instantly make you think of 343.

The only things I don’t like are the new marines and the pelicans. They are just too sci fi. Not enough “lets bodge it together and give it some soul” attitude.

Yeah, something about the Pelicans seems too floaty now, like they have no weight.

Well, the retconned Mk VI is the one you get in multiplayer. John’s Mk VI was upgraded by Cortana via nanobots stored on the FUD. And I don’t see any real visual differences in the FUD to be honest.

The intro video used the upgraded Mk VI because (I’m assuming) 343 didn’t want to create fully-textured variants of the other MJOLNIR Marks.

Some things to understand.

Whatever 343i chooses to be canon is canon.

Fans like us do not get to determine canonicity.

> It was probably more due to 343i wanting to forge their own identity in the way they interpret the Halo universe.

This, all though I do not agree with it. I think this is what happened.

IMO I think the current “changes” are terrible though.

  • Forward Unto Dawn bridge was designed more like the Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Grunts look like Toadstool from Mario
  • Elites look stupid, period
  • Prometheans look cartoony … they limp around with swords attached to their left arms … huh? and they hold every weapon the same, one-handed, etc
  • Spartan IV gear is downright laughable, most helmets are absurd, some without visors (wtf?)

I don’t have a problem with the change in identity or trying to make their own Halo look but some of this stuff was just horrible visually.

I have to agree with you OP. I don’t get why 343 changed the look of damn near everything. I understand they want to put their mark on Halo and say ‘Hey we did this’ but they don’t need to change EVERYTHING. Especially the Forward Unto Dawn! How the Hell does that ship match the one in Halo 3’s ending???

Hopefully they fix this -Yoink- in Halo 5.

This game ties in perfectly with Halo lore, if you read Halo Glasslands and The Thursday War you would know this. Humanity has been gleaming forerunner artifacts for decades and have recently obtained the Huragok, they’ve just been waiting for a chance to rebuild while not under threat of extermination.

HALO 4 FITS IN PERFECTLY WITH THE LORE, IT’S A GREAT EVOLUTION OF THE HUMAN SPECIES

Some of the changes are ok like chiefs armour but it could of been dealt with differently, like start him with halo 3 mark 6 then when they come across infinty he gets an upgrade. - The FUD was just no, it didn’t need to change
The covenant looks alright apart from the grunts
The prometheans look cool and fit into halo in their own unique way
Didact looks really awesome and changed what i thought his armour looked like (his attitude and reasons are complete crap though)
The weapons changes don’t bother me too much
Infinity looked beastly and you can see how forerunner tech made it different
The Spartan-IV armour, my god some are really cool (warrior, etc) and some are disgusting (scanner, pioneer helmet) I tend to stick with scout

The changes are alright but some are way too dramatic

It’s Terminals sure don’t. Neither does the Prologue.

Well i guess i can argue your entire post OP with 3 words.

Because they can.

Sorry but that’s the truth. In Halo 5, Halo 4 will be canon.Halo’s 1-3 were not 343’s game so they don’t have to follow exactly how it was.Halo’s 4-6 are their games and they will take away and add what they feel will make their games unique to them, yet similar to bungies past Halo games.Which i believe was their goal and they did that well.Though they kind of screwed up on the MP, hard to argue against that.
