Why is Halo 3 so timeless?

This something that I find myself marvelling at more and more as time passes.

How has a over 10 year old Halo game that is easily outclassed by what games are capable of today remained one THE most iconic games of all time? For instance, the Halo 3 tournament that ran alongside a Halo 5 event generated significantly more interest and many people are comparing the feeling they get when playing Apex Legends to what they felt when Halo 3 released. Also, many of the discussions/polls I have created often highlight how awesome Halo 3 was to the people who played it.

Furthermore, the recent HCS article stated that “Halo 3 has come back into the competitive scene in a big way”. Again, I am amazed at how that’s possible, given how old it is.

Not to mention the demand for Halo 3: Anniversary.

I started playing Halo regularly in 2010, so I unfortunately missed the ‘Glory Days of Halo 3’, and I do not have the attachment to Halo 3 that many people who bought it at release have. To me, Halo 3 is an interesting and enjoyable game with occasionally frustrating multiplayer. Overall, an excellent Halo game.

To quote the Piggyback strategy guide “Halo 3 is a game designed to last”.

My question is, what did Bungie incorporate into Halo 3 that has allowed it to endure for for so long?

I think it created a lot of innovations that are standard today. Because of that it still feels like a more modern game in some aspects despite being 10+ years old.

Another thing is I think Halo 3 was by far the most popular and known in the public eye. It was everywhere. I’ve said (and I’m sure others have too) that Fortnite today is what Halo 3 was 10 years ago.

On top of What’s been said, the games story is stunning. The visuals are great and to me, outperform Halo 4. I only started halo 3 last summer. Before then, I had played every other Xbox and 360 halo. But halo 3 jumped out to me as a perfect game. Emotional story, stunning visuals, and solid multiplayer. As well as being by far the most popular halo.

The game was simply released in a time where quality standards were much higher. People who play video games nowadays are notorious for bending over and allowing companies to do whatever they want, so there’s no reason for companies to even make sure their games work at launch as the vast majority will still buy the next product. Many games now have worse artificial intelligence, less content, and are much more monetized than games from even a decade ago, but people still defend it to the point of calling those who are against what’s become of the industry “haters.”

Bungie made a solid plan and harnessed their talented developers’ full potential (or maybe in the reverse order). Those developers put a whole lot of love into their work and everything was just a well-oiled machine. Essentially, they had their **** together and set their hearts and minds to making the most polished and feature-rich game possible, all the while having fun doing it. That’s what gave Halo 3 longevity and it’s hard to come by a team these days with that philosophy.

The hype train was obviously fueled by Microsoft. Same thing here too though, the team working on marketing just did everything right. I think that’s what made it a great game to look forward to and is one of the reasons why nostalgia for it is so easy to find.

Halo 3 is a game that goes beyond time. I really wanted Halo 3 Anniversary ,but, I still think it looks amazing graphically (except Marine faces). I remember I was in 8th/9th grade in 2007 and I saved up my money and bought an Xbox 360 after I saw the first “Starry Night” commercial on tv. Remember, in 2007, the Xbox 360 with harddrive was like $300-$400 so that was a lot of money for me to even have at the time. I wanted any kind of Halo 3 news I could get, commercials, anything. The marketing is another reason it was so big. I only wanted to eat Burger King because of their Halo 3 stuff, the only gas station I wanted my mom to go to was 7/11 so I could get Halo 3 cups with Slurpees, and, as a big Coca-Cola drinker my whole life, I put that on hold for, you guessed it, Mountain Dew Game Fuel. When the release finally came around I was so excited and I was not disappointed. I felt they took the gameplay from Halo: CE and Halo 2 and improved it greatly. I can remember starting the game with the amazing opening scene with Cortana talking and starting to walk through the jungle on Sierra 117 and being in awe of how the plants actually moved. This game absolutely blew my mind and I fell in love with it. I would rush home everyday after school just to play Halo 3. No other game has ever had this effect on me. Yeah, I like other games, but I love Halo 3. Still to this day me and my friends have a big LAN party a year to play Halo 3. Nothing else, just Halo 3, and most of them loved CoD. Halo 3 may be slower than newer games but I still play it to this day. It is timeless because for many others like me, nothing else in time has come close to Halo 3 in terms of video games. Long live Halo 3, the greatest game of all time!
