I think a lot of people use the term somewhat interchangeably.
Rubber banding, melee phasing, being shot around corners etc.
A lot of it is obvioulsy server lag. The server and the user get out of sync. So it can also be called desync.
But the things that happen when there is no lag - like during LAN events - are often specifically referred to as desync. Something is happening in the game code that doesn’t sync up the players to each other and what the weapons are doing.
I think it’s mostly when people find shots not registering - specifically hammer swings and rocket splashes.
Think of how many games are online on PC without these problems. Hell, Apex Legends and Fortnite have crossplay that includes playstation and the friggin’ switch, and you’re going to blame desync on hardware diversity?
That actually helps clarify it quite a lot thanks, especially with regards to LAN. The term has just caught me offguard as most of the issues I face are the same lag issues I had with some games years ago, and that I see others having now, and wondered if there was a difference. Appreciated
