Why is Chief's Armor so Banged-Up?

This isn’t an observation based on the Halo 2 Anniversary screenshots, but something I’ve wondered for years: Why is Chief’s Mark VI armor so scratched up at the beginning of Halo 2? It was just shipped in the morning he put it on, as it says in the game.

I know why: it wouldn’t be practical to make several textures for Chief throughout the game so he could progressively look more battle-worn as the game went on (though that would be cool).
But canonically, it makes no sense.

Either way: I love what they did with his armor. I’m sure like with CEA, this early look is subject to change, but unlike the early look of CEA, this armor is spot-on. I could only see them maybe adding more texture or some more glossiness in the visor (although I like the flat matte look of it … Halo 3’s visor was too shiny, if you ask me.)

Maybe FedEx delivered it.

I would say that the paint is scratched not the armor itself. I always loved the rugged look. Its possible that the armor had been around for sometime on earth. It’s possible that the tech was developed, tested, but not repainted when Chief received it.

The armor could have been banged up when Maria-062 was testing it in Seongnam. She did go through re-entry and fell a couple hundred feet (maybe more) to the ground after getting rid of her parachute. That could have cause the armor damage, from a canon-standpoint.

You like the matte look of the visor? I hate it. It’s my biggest complaint about Chief’s updated look. I like a little shine.

I do, I’m not sure why. It immediately struck me as being off, but I liked it. Frankie said when they were showing some game play that what we were seeing wasn’t finished, and it still looked better than CEA, so I’m sure everything is going to get some amazing finishing touches; including the shiny visor that he should have … It would look weird to see him in Halo 2 with a matte visor and then a super reflective one in Halo 3

Well it’s not a finished version, it’s an initial render.

1 day shipping involves dropping the dang thing in an SOIEV.

It most likely had to do with Bungie only wanting to use one MC model in the game. They could’ve made it all shiny and new looking which would fit the beginning of the game, but by the end that armor would look odd considering everything Chief had been through. I really don’t think there is any canonical reason for why it looks the way it does, but who knows, I could be wrong.

I can only think of Maria testing it and the armor not being re painted.

Other than that, it could just be the trouble of making more than one texture
