Why is armor customization so limited in Halo 5?

In the beta, we only had 3 customization options; Helmet, Armor, and Visor. From the looks of things, that hasn’t changed at all since the beta. We still can’t mix and match different pieces like in Halo 4… even though Halo 5 appears to use many of the same armor models.

What gives? Why can’t we swap out individual parts like in Halo 4? Helmet, Torso, Shoulders, Arms, Legs, Visor… if there was one thing I liked about Halo 4 (on the Xbox 360, because customization is even worse in Halo: MCC) it was the extensive number of customization options available for your Spartan.

Why has 343i taken such a big step backwards in the customization department? Why can we just have the same armor customization options as in Halo 4?

Time and effort. It was easier for them to skip a few lines on the to-do list.
That’s one of the best we can come up with. Yes, I see it as a step backwards, as do alot of other people, but what can you do?

I’ve taken up a theory 343i didn’t want people to look like they “Frankenstien’d” their Spartan armor just before shipping out.

Its really only shoulders that mattered; be honest, youve only ever picked arms and legs because they matched the rest, and now every armor set gets unique arms and legs. That being said I am dissapointed about shoulders, I used to go asymetrical all the time. But the sets also allow them to vary armor more; in halo 4 every piece had to look half decent with any other, so they all generally looked the same style wise. From the beta it looked as if some armord are lighter and darker with new patterns and materials.

Yeah, kind of a bummer on the customization aspect. Honestly legs I could care less about, but I agree with your comment about the shoulders. Ah well

many others have made threads about this issue and for every single one you’ll see an answer that says something like this:
343i may have limited our customization options but that allowed them to make hundreds of sets.

So if that is correct we should be seeing a lot sets in Halo 5.
Im okay with limited customization options if this is true.
I may not understand why but I’ll accept it.

OCT 27 COME TO ME

Apparently they said they are going for a massive quantity of armors, with the possibility of adding new ones for free via the REQ system, rather than focusing on “nuts and bolts” style customization. They have already confirmed a lot of sets so far so I am not too worried.

I know it’s a step back but like the other guy said i only care to shoulders get back

Never really knew what the draw of the full on customizing was, you don’t even see yourself when you play, (unless you die lots I guess haha). We have been told that we will get lots of choices from the more limited armor parts we can change.

If true better than mix and match. They add enough sets you probably won’t see yours repeated often. As long as they are embracing that people want to feel unique I think it’ll be fine.

Is this a conformed thing that nothing has/will be changed? That would be a huge letdown. I loved the armor customization from Reach, halo 4 was a bit like it but not as good in my opnion (I didn’t like the designs mostly).

because they didnt have time, thats all i can think of…

though it is a massive disapointment we wont be seeing halo reach style customisation, id MUCH prefer that to what weve got. It wouldnt be hard with this system either given theyve already made the sets…

Hey OP,

They’re limited to body, helmet and visor because that will create more options overall. Instead of having 343i make sure that a particular armor set of shoulders works and blends in with other Chest pieces (and doesn’t clip, etc), it’s easier to create one entire body, skin it, colour it and texture it without having to worry if it will clip or clash or have issues with other pieces.

So technically with REQ packs we can have hundreds of choices to choose from. We might even be able to have special event armors or unlockables like DICE has for BF4.

Haven’t seen official word on the customisation changes (If any since beta), therefore going to withhold my opinion on it until further details come out.

Yeah, I really liked the way Reach and H4’s armor customization worked. I don’t know why they would scrap that.

Cause the weird art style the armors cannot be mixed around cause stuff is all over the place.
I dont know how Bungie did it but 343 gets artist form all over the place to create armor.
It seems that they get no info on any requirements when it comes to placement of things.
This is why we get armors that dont really work together.

I would like it much better if they returned to the Halo Reach customization system, but I wouldn’t mind that much if it didn’t return.

I think it may have to do with time and resources, i mean by the sounds of it warzone took up a lot of both. If we look at Reach the campaign was 6-7 hours long and had 21 maps at the end of its cycle (have no idea how many it launched with). Halo 5 is launching with a campaign twice as long as that and 20+ maps on launch, if you watched the sprint you’ll know that map building isn’t a two day job and I’m guessing level design will be equally time consuming. Ad that to the req system where instead of one assault rifle you suddenly have numerous versions and the time constraints suddenly become a big issue.

I think that the armor gallery that we will get it’s gonna be enormous. I mean, this is a New-Generation game, no?
