Why I'm hoping for Infinite to be open world

There’s been a lot of speculation about Halo infinite possibly being open world. Some really hate this idea, but some (including myself) think this would be a fantastic idea.

There is so much lore in halo. From all of the games, books, comics, and videos like Halo Legends. However, not every Halo fan knows about all of this great lore. Not everyone has read all of the books, or researched all of the extended universe, and an open world Halo game would be the answer.

Imagine exploring ancient forerunner ruins and temples, and finding technology or terminals that explore the Halo mythos. Maybe even exploring ancient laboratories that were once dedicated to researching the flood. Imagine interacting with NPC’s at a UNSC camp on Zeta Halo, talking about past events. Interacting with members of Blue Team to see how they survived and made it into the events of Halo 5. Raiding covenant strongholds, accessing computers and learning about covenant history. Finding Remnants of ancient Humans and their history would be very intriguing as well.

Many people do not like the idea of open world because they want a traditional halo campaign. Well what if the open world was in some ways optional, and you could complete the campaign by interacting with a pelican at a UNSC base that will “fast travel” the chief to mission locations. There could be incentives to explore like the ones I mentioned, as well as loot boxes with upgrades and technology. This technology could be brought to an armor/weapons tech at a UNSC base or even the infinity, and could be used for customization.

Then with multiplayer, there could be an area at the base or the infinity where you access Infinity war games from within the world. If players do not want to enter the world to get to multiplayer, there could just be an option at the main menu of the game to go straight to multiplayer.

I could go on, but I want to read what you all think about this? Thoughts? Ideas? Improvements? Arguments against this idea? Thanks for your input!

I’m pretty determined that it should have linear missions with more expansive environments where the player has more choice in how they get through the mission than in the past. The amount of freedom should change depending on the setting and the pacing of the mission. However, there are various reasons why the game shouldn’t have a fully open world campaign. One of the reasons is that the Halo campaigns have always been quite story driven, and the more free-roam you make the game, the more the story gets pushed to the background, and the game becomes more about the player than the story. The other reason is that splitting the game into missions allows much more variation in the environments. Even in a game like Breath of the Wild that does a lot of things right to avoid the open world syndrome, you still have that “Hey, I can see my house from here!” problem; the world will inevitably end up feeling small. You’d have this huge Halo ring, but somehow every point of interest is in this 20x20 kilometer area? Halo CE sure would’ve been a lot different if you had seen the Pillar of Autumn, Thruth and Reconciliation, and the control room all from Silent Cartographer.Open world makes sense for games where the open world truly is its self-contained world, like the kingdom of Hyrule, or the island state of Medici. In Halo, there really isn’t such a self-contained world, so it makes no sense to restrict the world to be smaller than it could be.

343 could do a open world game, but not with the master chief.Every halo game that has had chief in it is a fps.Not everyone is a fan of open world and with how divisive halo 5 was, changing to a new genre isn’t gonna fly with a lot of people

:thinking::thinking::thinking: don’t think I’ve found a shooter that has a semi decent open world, at best they just look pretty. After that you get so much trudging around in nearly empty worlds that it’s boring and games either don’t put enough AI to fight it it’s nothing but fighting (with the latter taking away from exploration).

id prefer them sticking to the more traditional linear approach.

It could be awesome if executed correctly, I’m just worried it’ll just be like a destiny spin off.

Well the missions could be linear, the pelican I mentioned could also be a transport to campaign missions, but those missions could be reached by traversing Halo as well. Another thing I forgot to mention is that fellow marines, captain Lasky, Dr. Halsey, Arbiter etc. could provide the Chief with side missions (Halsey could ask you to retrieve pieces of forerunner tech, things along that nature).

Being on a Halo is the perfect setting for an open world game. There can be huge Forerunner walls, and mountains that can block off different environments. There can be huge caves that lead out into crazy environments. I really believe that if executed correctly, Halo could be the perfect recipe for a great open world shooter. There are infinite possibilities (pun intended)

They would definitely have to set it apart from destiny, which I think they definitely could. And you’re right, it needs to be executed correctly. I think if they do it, it would have to contain loads and loads of replay value, and plenty of reasons to explore. Random events, like in skyrim, would be a must. Covenants drop ships randomly swooping down dropping off squads and vehicles, or even small flood outbreaks could need to be contained. These are just examples, there are so many different possibilities.

I read the novels and am ready to experience these places in game through an open world!

I want big environments… Not open world.

I feel like we (by we I mean 343) should focus on Halo being Halo instead of taking on huge unessary tasks. Not to be that guy, but last time 343 decided to go “all out” we eneded up with MCC.

My fear isn’t the open world, my fear is 343s version of open world in Halo.

This is assuming it is open world, if it’s open beauriful environments 343 have proven that they are capable of this in my opinion. Also, the mixture of the old art style with a updated twist is something 343 might be amazing at. Halo 2 remastered is the best lookimg Halo to date it it’s current state in my opinion. It shows that they can do it, I just hope they… yano… do it.
