Why I think this game isn't fun

Just adding my voice to the endless negative feedback 343i deserves.

Perceived unfairness and being punished for it
This is a big one. The amount times I die and the first thought through my head isn’t “Crap he got me” but instead “Wait what?” is too often. This can result from a several factors.

One of them is obvious ofcourse. Its the Aim Assist + Bullet Magnetism thing. We all know about it, we all have our opinions on it. If I get insta sniped I will never consider that to be the skill of the other player but I will instead think: “I wonder if he’s on a controller.” and therefore immediatly dismiss his shot as having some sort of positive handicap over me.

Another one is the times where I get swarmed by enemies or flanked by an enemy. Sources say they changed the motion tracker to be more in line with the older games but I don’t think they did. I often find myself getting surprised by enemies but I know they haven’t been crouching, This can either be from the fact that the motion tracker still isn’t set up so that it tracks -motion- or that the motion tracker radius is too small or the player movement is too fast or a combination of all three above. In other games I have never felt that the motion tracker was this useless.

Then when I do die due to some way that I perceive as unfair or bs… I have to wait very long before I can respawn. Which feels like a punishment to me. Take note how I say its perceived unfairness. I die. I call BS. I have to wait to respawn. One day I think it’s almost easier to press esc, leave game, queue up again. I don’t do that. Yet. But I might.

The sandbox feels pointless
Weapons seem unresponsive and clunky. When I finally do find a weapon I want to use I often find myself wondering if they are any good at all. The Commando, even when I fire with controlled shots, often seems to run empty before I manage to kill an enemy. Maybe it’s my aim being bad, or the spread/bloom, being nonsense, it doesn’t matter. They don’t feel useful. Nor does the Pulse Carbine, the shotgun, any of the fancy smancy projectile launchers… The only weapons that seem worthwhile are the AR, BR, Pistol, Sniper and Spankr.

Vehicle drops are alright and can offer fun. But most of the time it leans more towards my first point. If I have to face off vs a guy in a ghost and I don’t have the right weapons/equipment on me I will die and I will just list that under another unfair death. If I can’t hide, I can’t run, I can’t fight back, whats the point.

The other way around is if I’m on the turret of a Warthog. I shred people. When a controller person is on a turret of a Warthog. They’re useless. The rate of fire is so high that it benefits me. That would also be an unfair death for everyone I manage to kill like this.

Can’t play the way I want
I don’t always want to stand around holding a skull. I don’t always want to capture a flag. I don’t always want to get a macguffin to power my base up. Or stand in circles on the ground. Sometimes I do. Sometimes I don’t. Give me the choice to play what I feel like. This forced random objective gameplay is detrimental for my gameplay experience as I just want to hop in and shoot people. Thats why I play a shooter. But if I do that during objectives, I will be screwing 3 other people over on my team.

Challenges force my hand
Yeah, I know. Challenges are optional. But when I have a challenge that says “Kill 10 guys with a needler” and then I can’t find a needler to save my life. It’s really annoying. I can choose to just ignore challenges and play the game but then it feels like I’m spending my time in a suboptimal manner. Now-a-days time is more important than anything else.

Same with challenges like: “Play a match of Stockpile” and then I proceed to force myself into 15 games of Big Team Battle just to play Capture the Flag or Total Control. While in truth I’d be far happier to play Quick Battle, or even grind some games of Ranked. But I can’t. Cause if I do, I won’t progress my challenges. Bad design.

Art style and immersion
It’s multiplayer. Immersion isn’t important to many people. I’m one of the few that do find it important. A flaming helmet, sure I can live with. Bright pink enemies in free for all, why not. Whatever floats their boat. The thing was, it was all believable. Everyone was a Spartan in some sort of MJOLNIR armor. Now, I have to fight Samurai Cyber Soldiers. And it won’t be long before there’ll Polka Dot Spartans, and Animal Helmet Spartans with little armor effects like a flaming tail. I know it’s free to play but this is seriously something that I hate seeing in my Halo games.

AI companion
This was something I was super excited for. To have my personal AI companion talking to me while playing the game. My AI, with my chosen color, and who knows what else. But instead it’s really grating. I find myself often switching between AI’s just so I won’t hear their repetitive sound lines over and over and over and over again. It was a pretty cool idea that wouldn’t harm immersion in any way. But instead they botched it and now it’s just more of a nuisance than anything else.

Anyway those are my few cents for now. I’m sure there’ll be way more. But I don’t think anything will come from this post. I’ve read so many threads on this forum about things people want to see changed but I have rarely seen 343i act on them. I’m not talking just about Infintie. But also MCC, Halo 4, and Halo 5.

We’re talking to a wall. Add that to my list of why I don’t think it’s any fun.

The pulse rifle has homing and is such used at longer ranges.

Agreed. If I get a kill, it’s cause I outplayed my opponent(s). If I get killed, its cause I got cheesed on some bulls&#%. :smirk:

I agree with your take on the unfairness of the game. I think that all of your points are true except for the point on controller auto-aim. I don’t know where M&K players are coming out of the woodwork from complaining about this, but this game has the lowest auto-aim and bullet-magnetism in the series, to the point that it is extremely frustrating to aim controller. If both M&K and controller players don’t like what’s going on then there is an issue with the game, I’d think. I do think that the radar range is a part of this. It feels like most fights take place outside of it, which makes it pointless. This was a horrible change for the worse but 343i have decided to double down on it for some reason. Getting shot in the back just outside of radar range, especially with the overall lowered TTK, does not feel good, and most importantly does not feel “Halo.”

I mostly agree with your other points as well, and it has actually caused me to put the game down. I’ll come back for campaign next week, but until some pretty major changes take place in the mulitiplayer I think that I’m done with it. It’s just not fun to be forced to play game-types that I don’t want to play, with teammates that aren’t even playing the objective in order to chase challenges. I’ll slowly complete this battle pass because I paid for it, but if nothing changes then it’ll be the last one for me and I’ll just go back to MCC.

And statistics show that the average controller player is on par with the top 100 mkb players. Whether they messed up mouse aiming or they are over compensating for controller, there is a massive gap in accuracy that isn’t due to skill.

I’ve seen that number thrown around, but I don’t where it actually came from. I have a couple of friends playing on PC, and they all say that M&K feels horrible and have moved to controller. As a console player I’ve also been playing with controller and all of us feel that the aim is just off. I really do not think that the difference, if it exists, is because of aim assist. This game is hard to aim in on controller, and outside of Red Reticle Range there is 0 aim assist, and I feel like most fights start outside of RRR.

Stopped reading after you mentioned aim assist. Just wanted to point out it’s easier to snipe on mnk opposed to controller. Anyone will agree with this

I didn’t read the whole post, but just being honest here, you’re one of those players that I just don’t like playing with. Every now and then I’ll join a match where someone has their mic on, and they’re constantly complaining that the game mysteriously doesn’t work, except just for them! They’re dieing not because they got outplayed by an opponent, but because the game is broken, just against their own favor. Literally, yesterday, I had a guy on my team saying, “Oh yeah, melee works for you [opponent], but not me!” “I literally hit you with a rocket and nothing happened!” “I died without being hit!”

Sure, maybe rarely, some glitch, or lag more likely, is making something wrong/impossible, happen to you, but when you’re are shouting into mic every twenty seconds about the game not working, and of course, it magically only affects you, then I know it’s pure BS. Maybe the other players are just that much better than you, and you don’t know the game as well as you think you do, and you’re having trouble following along. Maybe it’s just a coping mechanism, and for some reason, you need to try to save face with your teammates, (people who you just met, and will probably never see again). But really, I don’t care. Some people aren’t as good as others in a game. Sometimes you have a bad game. Whatever. It happens. I honestly don’t care that much if you’re playing poorly and dragging the team down. It’s online gaming, and I’m choosing to solo queue. It happens. Sometimes, I’m that bottom player. I care way more about your dumb attitude than your performance.

This is a tale as old as time. There’s always people like this always screaming “This game is BS!”
Please just don’t be one of those people.

These people often are also the ones whining about other people’s tactics, complaining about the weapons they use, or complaining when they run away, etc etc. Like, look, they’re beating you. Maybe you should do what they’re doing instead of complaining about it.

I totally agree about controller aiming feeling bad and being super frustrating. It’s especially bad at close range. I’m okay with 343i making aim a bit more difficult than prior Halo games, but it needs to be dialed in to be a little easier than it currently is. Making controller feel great needs to be a higher priority than balancing with M&K. Ranked playlists have separate input-based matchmaking and 343i should give us the option to opt-out of cross-play.

The radar range is way too short (far shorter than previous Halo games). It is useless the majority of the time and I get killed from behind SO much more in this game, which is super frustrating.

I’ve read several explanations from people that sound like they know what they are talking about that say the aim acceleration is the issue. Apparently it takes too long to get your reticle moving and too long to slow it back down and it’s not linear with your stick input.

I don’t know what the issue is, but that sounds more like the issue than aim assist / magnetism.
