Why I love Classic Halo but not Leg. Slayer

Ever since Halo 4 came out, the community has begged 343 for a “Classic Halo” playlist, with no armor abilities, classic starting “loadouts”, etc. as a way to play similar to previous Halo games. I think most of us that have played those games know the traditional feel of Halo. It took a long time for 343 to respond to that request, but I give them credit for making it happen eventually. That being said…

Legendary Slayer is NOT Classic Halo. Sure, there’s AR starts, resupply of grenades, weapons on the map, and other factors, but there are still a few things that just don’t sit right.

For one, there is still sprint. Classic Halo games that the community reveres, namely Halo 1-3, never had sprint. It’s a complete game changer. I’ve played no-sprint in Halo 4, and it’s a very different experience that does feel much more like a classic Halo game. It’s been implemented into Lightning flag, so it’s obvious that it’s possible for it to be implemented into other playlists, as well. (The competitive community is REALLY pushing for this in v5 throwdown, also…)

Secondly, classic Halo had BR starts in addition to AR. Whenever I was in a voting lobby in older Halo games and there were 2 of the same map, one with the AR start gametype and the other with the BR/DMR start gametype, the BR/DMR start almost always gathered more votes than the AR start. I understand that Legendary BRs is a gametype in the Global Championship this week, but it hasn’t transitioned to actual Legendary slayer. Why not??? I LOATHE having to use the AR at all, and it’s because of this and reason #3 that I now avoid LS entirely.

Finally(and in my opinion MOST importantly), WHY IS THERE NO MAGNUM SECONDARY WITH THE ASSAULT RIFLE STARTS??? In previous Halo titles (namely the most recent Halo 3 and Reach), the AR was always accompanied by a magnum secondary. I ABHOR the AR. I don’t like using it, and I feel so much more comfortable with a precision weapon in my hands. The magnum was a fantastic secondary for that very reason. That’s the reason why I didn’t mind AR starts in previous games. I could whip out my magnum and “pew pew” my way through the game no problem. With the Legendary Slayer AR starts, though, I just find myself getting frustrated because I want classic halo feel, but the price is having to use a weapon I am extremely uncomfortable with.

I think these are all things that would be pretty easy to change, too.

Sprint being an option is difficult to implement (for custom games yet easy for the reason you suggested) but they could add it in however, classic halo had no BR starts if anything they need to add a pistol as a secondary.

Yeah, pistol and assault rifle starts with sprint disabled would be an excellent way to go. Though I wouldn’t mind a battle rifle being tossed in to the mix.

I agree. We need some kind of a sprintless Slayer game type so we can at least make a legit non-modded classic slayer game type ourselves. I want to see a sprintless v5 game type as well. BR starts in Legendary would great too.

I like sprint, but on bigger maps rather than smaller maps. I think some playlists should have sprint while others should not.

I made a thread about this before LS came out and basically said the same things you said. Except I pointed out 343 initially said LS was a “mix of Infinity and Throwdown”, and thats a direct quote from Kevin Franklin…but whatever.

The main problem with LS is it isnt anything in particular. I dont know what 343 was thinking and it proves they dont understand Halo. There was a dynamic to “classic” Halo. It wasnt stripped down and boring

They could have made it a legit Team Slayer playlist.
Primary/secondary/resupply/explsvs
Radar
Power weapons AND power ups ON MAP
Multiple variants for EACH primary(Team BRs,Team LRs, Team anything)
Medium size maps no bigger than Haven. If 343 can disable sprint then smaller remakes would be perfect.
-Optional/Experimental-
AAs on map that spawn more frequently than power ups.
Multiple Pre set loadouts(same primary) like BR/mag/resupply dex, BR/mag/resupply/awareness, BR/mag resupply/explsvs, for example.

Thats basically the dynamic of Halo Slayer. I’d be cool with BR starts but it still needs more.

At least they’re trying.

It’s not like they’ve gone **** the community, we have our money so we won’t implement changes or new playlists that people want.

I think it should be the new shielding speed upgrade, and resupply.

Legendary slayer is broken and Glitchy…

There needs to be more maps implemented, bugs fixed(Like where certain map weapons wont spawn the entire match) more variety in weapon…

I could go on all day… Hopefully It’ll be better when the DLC update comes out… but as for now… matches are either a snorefest of free kills for me, or a spawn camping nightmare…

Actually if you boot up Halo 3 the default slayer variant only has AR’s not even pistols. That is the slayer the game shipped with. Just saying.

I don’t think no Sprint would work unless they add classic maps into the playlist. Right now, we’re playing on default Halo 4 maps, all of which were designed with Sprint in mind. They might work without Sprint, but they work better with it.

This playlist wasn’t even meant to be classic. It’s supposed to be a mix of classic and Infinity. It’s just closer to being classic.

That said, I do wish there was a pistol secondary and a BR/Carbine/DMR/LR gametype. It would make it a lot more interesting.

I don’t mind AR starts. The AR in Halo 4 is both the most viable against power weapons, and the most skillfull AR in the entire Halo franchise. And in constrast, the BR and DMR in Halo 4, are actually the least skillful in the entire Halo franchise. So it’s nice that they took into account the fact that they actually built the AR with a skill gap for once, but messed up on the BR and DMR.

As well, in Halo CE, “Custom” weapon spawns gave you an AR and a Magnum (And an insane 4 grenades). While “Generic” (which was default) gave you a weapon chosen depending on which map you were on. For instance on Blood Gulch you got Plasma Pistols, on Rat Race you got just an AR, and on Hang em High you started with just a Magnum. For obvious reasons, most people defaulted to the “Custom” setting.

When Halo 2 first came out, we were treated to a standard of SMG only spawns. (with it changing to Plasma Rifles on Midship and Waterworks). It took a while before BR starts actually got added to the rotation.

And again when Halo 3 first came out. The entire game was AR starts, no Magnum, no secondary, no BR starts to veto for. It was just ARs. It took a while for them to add BR starts to the game to begin with, and even longer to add Magnum secondaries for AR starts.

Halo Reach was the only Halo matchmaking game on release that spawned you with a Magnum Secondary by default, and had a DMR start variant on-ship in Matchmaking. So to be honest, it’s not really “Classic” for Legendary to come with Magnum secondaries or BR/DMR start choices anyway, because Halo 2 and Halo 3 didn’t provide either of those until several months after they were released. It’s actually more classic the way it is… But without sprint… sprint needs to go, like from the entire game.

Halo 3 may not have shipped with the settings for a magnum secondary or BR starts, but they obviously put it in for a reason. I see absolutely no reason to go back on something that was implemented at the community’s request. Devolution of a playlist that’s already pretty bare-bones doesn’t seem like a good plan to me.

Again, I hate using the AR. It’s a viable weapon, but with a less than stellar internet connection, it’s really inconsistent. I prefer the control and balance of precision weapons.

As far as the BR/DMR being the easiest, it’s true… If the next halo ships with this much auto-aim, I may not buy it… I went back to play Reach some yesterday and I enjoyed the challenge of actually having to aim precisely rather than have my reticule drag to the head by itself.

I wish 343 will put this in Halo 4 soon or maybe in the next Halo.

Reason I don’t like legendary slayer is because its not classic. Halo was good back then because it was good back then. It won’t even be that good today if it was an exact replica.

Can’t say I’m that bothered though as I prefer Halo now.

Agreed magnum 2ndary, disagree on sprint, gotten used to it.

It’d probably hold a higher pop than Halo now.

This all pretty much rings true to me:

AR/magnum and BR/AR starts, sprint disabled, and some competitive forge maps would be nice.
