Why I love Agent Locke Already

I know that he is meant to be the bad guy in halo 5, but I really think he is a great character. We know he is a good person from Halo: Nightfall, and he was probably misguided or just following orders from ONI in the last trailer. Either that or master chief makes some really big mistakes while trying to bring back Cortana that causes humanity to hate him for a good reason. Anyway, I think his script in that trailer was so well done and epic. Really reminds me of the halo 2 cutscenes with the Arbiter. And his voice might even be the most epic one yet (at least in the last trailer, because in the halo 2 anniversary cinematic with him he sounded fairly average at best). His character might be the most interesting one yet for me, and I’m really excited to see the dynamic between him, the master chief and the arbiter in halo 5. What about you?

Locke isn’t meant to be a bad guy, just a different perspective.

We’re going have another Halo 2 situation where we experience both characters’ stories separately, and then have an eventual team-up. I do look forward to seeing what those -Yoinks!- at ONI have been telling him though. Can’t wait for that “Oh, man, I’m sorry Chief! I can’t believe ONI lied to me like that, what a bunch of jerks!” moment in Halo 5.

I like him as well. He’s not your typical soldier that follows order for the hell of it. He actually questions his orders and who he’s working for. I can’t wait to see more of him in the future.

He might be a good character actually, instead of being a definitive bad character they might be going for the angle of the circumstances, not the people are bad. So therefore Locke could just be put in bad circumstances by Chiefs actions. Though I do agree, Locke is a badass and he looks like he’s gonna be a great character.

We might even not get that moment, if Chief really did do something bad. That would be even more interesting.

True although I wouldn’t be surprised if most people who saw Sunday’s ads during TWD think he’s a bad guy now.

Really? Chief was kind of a -Yoinkhole- in that. I’d expect him to be the bad guy, almost.

My sentiment exactly.

I think it might be similar to the two sides of Patriots. Locke is going to be the “My Country, Right Or Wrong” kind of Patriot, while Chief will be the one who wants to remove the corrupt elements of ONI and other UNSC organizations, the kind who knows being loyal sometimes means betraying those in power if they are a danger to it as a whole.

See, before the trailer, I was sure Locke was the kind of guy who would sympathize with Chief but had to bring him in because he worked for ONI. Now I’m not entirely sure. It looks like some -Yoink- went down and everyone is blaming Chief (including himself, when you see him yell at his own statue.) Either Locke never liked Chief, Locke has been brainwashed not to like Chief, or Chief has actually messed up pretty bad and Locke is entirely justified in not liking him.

I don’t think Locke has simply been ‘brainwashed’ by ONI. That would make him far too one-dimensional. I think Chief has done something that looks bad, but for the greater good that the rest of humanity can’t yet see. Such as nuking a city to stop the flood, or killing an ONI official who was corrupt.

Yea I’m a big fan of his character already as well. He’s clearly not meant to be interpreted as a bad guy. If you’ve seen Halo Nightfall then you know he has a strong sense of morals. He’s either being emphatically lied to or John really did do something unspeakable because he certainly wouldn’t act the way he did in his trailer without a reason. I mean he was clearly upset and angered at whatever he thought John had done and wished to preserve the memory of the Chief who saved Humanity, so he clearly doesn’t resent him on a personal level.

I think the big fight will be epic. Hopefully both Locke and the Master Chief will have long journeys with plenty character development before the inevitable clash. Long campaign please!

Hahaha or they pull another Halo 2 and leave us with a cliffhanger ending and Locke will still be viewed as a “Bad” guy until Halo 6 comes along.

I agree with you wholeheartedly! I loved Locke’s delivery in his trailer. As a character, he is pretty well developed. But, I’m affriad he is being misled by ONI and will be viewed by many as the “bad guy” in this exchage. Hopefully, though, by story’s end Locke will be around and he will be a new hero that is here to stay.

Im guessing that maybe the colony that we saw at the end of Halo 4 while the Didact is narrating and you see the marines coming out of the pelican and looking around is the same colony that is destroyed in those two trailers. Maybe the Didact or some other enemy, was attacking that colony and Chief was called upon to help with the fight but had to make a very hard decision to turn his back and not help them. He may have needed to do something of greater importance to saving the human race like finding the Mantle before the Forerunners do. I don’t know really. It’s just my theory of what Chief might have done to make ONI and Locke question his actions.

Jesus christ, they are doing a freaking great job at maintaining a known plot a freaking mystery. There are too many possibilities to only one answer. This -Yoink- is driving me insane.

Yeah that’s my biggest fear. And even though they aren’t friends in the end of Halo 2, you could make a very reasonable assumption that that’s where the relationship was heading. I’m just worried that 343 might not want to basically parallel the way Halo 2 did it, and instead they completely leave them as rivals/enemies until a later game. I just want to see some killer Chief/Locke/Arbiter team-up action. Maybe those three versus a horde of genocidal Brutes or something. I’d probably poop my pants.
