A lot of people complain that the REQ system is too RNG based and the old system of earning armors through achievements or level requirements is better. I disagree with this. With the old system I would see people wearing certain armors just because they were hard to unlock or you had to be high level to get them. In Reach I would always see the high level players wearing the exact same armors. People wore armors more to say “I did this achievement” or “I’m a high level and grinded a lot for this armor” instead of wearing it because they liked the way it looked. Even I did this a lot.
In Halo 5 there’s none of that. What armor you get is completely random. People don’t just wear armor because it was hard to get, they wear armor they like. Even though I have over 80% of armor including tons of legendaries and some mythics, I’m still wearing my rare Hellcat armor and uncommon Warrior helmet. Even though my legendaries have a higher rarity, I don’t want to wear them because it doesn’t prove I’m a higher level or did a really hard achievement; all it means is I had good RNG or spent a ton of money. I’ve seen a lot more variation of armor in this game than every other Halo game when people just went for the hardest to unlock armor.
I don’t really care what other people wear, but I do like how I don’t find myself pressured to wear “high-level stuff” instead of stuff that just looks good.
But I don’t like how if there’s an armor I want, I have to pray to RNGsus to get it instead of working towards something.

Helioskrill is only unlockable through an achievement now. And I think some armor should be too. Maybe just a couple. But the rest should be you know within the req system.
People tend to like the same armor as other people do, which is why they grind or be at that high level to achieve the armor, because they like the look of it.
Who cares if people liked to show off that they completed certain things? I wore whatever I felt looked good for my Spartan regardless of all the armors I unlocked through achievements or ranking up.
The older system gave a sense of achievement and gave you a set reward to work towards, unlike the REQ system that’s just luck based. With the REQ system you can’t work towards an armor you actually want, you just have to hope you get it eventually.
I prefer unlocking things by doing tasks, wouldn’t it be nice if you could get a DMR by picking one up and getting a certain amount of kills? I think the reason most people are disliking the REQ system is because the emblems are the only things you have to do tasks to get.

I prefer the old system, because then you could at least pick the armor you put your time and effort into getting without having to go through this system of random crap, not knowing whether or not the armor you get will be the one you want, and after all was said and done and the game had been out for months, less people wore armor because it was an achievement and more because it actually looked good (except for the Firefight boosters in Reach of course)
Back then, I’d have to work towards an achievement in Halo 3 or save up CCR in Reach and level up to get it, but now? Well, first I have to unlock every other armor piece if what I want is a Legendary or Mythic, or feed into the Micro-transaction system with money that 343i has most certainly NOT earned, especially considering that I’ve already paid $60.00.
I understand where you’re coming from, OP. Anyone who played Halo 3 wanted to wear the katana armor not necessarily because of the looks, but because they wanted to say “Hey! I got all the achievements!” But what about those of us who want to wear the rarest armor because we like the way it looks? Let’s be honest, a lot of the armor in Halo 5 is mediocre, and most of the pieces that actually make you look like a Spartan and not a power ranger are ultra rare or legendary. In Halo 3, if I wanted a specific helmet, I could look up the requirements to unlock it and just go get it. Now, I have to spend an indefinite number of hours playing to get points and cross my fingers when I open a gold pack if I ever hope to unlock what I want.
Reach had the best system for unlocking armor; save up your points and buy the armor you want directly.

Except this isn’t true.
People in H5 are still wearing the harder to unlock and higher level armors because let’s face it, unless you’re level 90+ you probably still don’t have most of the mythic or legendary armors, stances or weapon skins. I’m 77 and I’m still grinding through the last 20% of the uncommons and rares before I can even think about getting ultra rares.
While you CAN buy a gold pack at SR 5 and get a mythic unlock if you’re EXTREMELY lucky, that isn’t the norm and frankly it’s bad in the long run because you’ll be stuck unlocking the basic stuff from gold packs 99% of the time. That means wasted req points, much longer time to unlock common to rare stuff and generally higher disappointment when you get 2 commons from a gold.
If we’re going to keep it, can we at least try to tinker with it to better serve certain player segments?
To be specific, I’m asking for additional Req pack options for people who either play only Warzone or only Arena. Arena-only players can’t use any single-use vehicles or weapons, so they should only get cosmetic items. Meanwhile, Warzone players can technically still use cosmetic items but maybe they already have adequate cosmetics and just want gameplay-influencing items (guns and tanks).
The problem with that is to get the cosmetic items that you want, because “you like the way they look,” you are at the mercy of a lottery system that is even more tedious and unforgiving than an achievement-based unlocks system. Sharing from my own experience, I had to unlock every common cosmetic item (except for 7) before I got the one helmet (Air Assault[common]) that I actually wanted.
In an achievement-based system, it is always possible that lots of people will choose the same high-level gear. The best way to get around that is to provide players with enough options to customize themselves in the ways that they want. In Halo 4 there were plenty of options available to you, and if you wanted to look the same as everyone else, you were free to do that. In Halo 5, looking the way you want simply comes down to luck, and looking unique is a lot more difficult since you only have 4 options (Armor, Helmet, visor, armor color).
You could have every armour cost 10,000 - 50,000 RP and actually achieve that goal far more effectively.
With armours easy to obtain and available almost instantly, players would buy the armour they liked straight off and know there is no one wearing better or harder to obtain armour than theirs.
REQs still have armour that’s harder to obtain so still keeps the potential for players to show it off. Only now people didn’t earn the armour and there is no feeling of accomplishment in getting them.
My issue is more that 75% of the armor looks like crap. Total crap. And then there’s alternative color pallets or ugly white splotches on “Ultra rare” versions of the same fugly armor I had before.
Mark VI Regent armor? Disgusting white crap all over it.
