Why I don't like halo 5

Halo 5, in my opinion, is the worst halo game ever made (even worse than 4). Now before everyone starts calling me a hater, please hear me out. I’m not a bungie fanboy. When I criticise things that 343 have done I do it constructively and backed up with evidence without saying : “343 suck bring back bungie!” or any of that bullsh*t. I really didn’t want to make this post but things have gotten so bad that I feel that I have to. So I’m going to break down on why halo 5 sucks in many areas (in my opinion).

  • The story.Okay it’s pretty obvious that halo 5 story sucks but it’s worse then that. As we know the plot revolves around Cortana ruling the galaxy with her guardians and me and a lot of other people don’t like it. It backtracks everything that happened in halo 4 (Cortana’s sacrifice, Chiefs humanity, the Didact, The Janus key), it has a cliff hanger ending which isn’t earned and it wasn’t the story we were promised. But what really drew it for me is how badly its executed. The characters have no proper introduction and most characters… hell even Chief was just bland and unlikeable. The covenant have NOTHING to do with the story and the Swords of Sanghelios are just a vain attempt to give the Covenant some importance to the story. Everyone just assumes that Cortana is alive which utterly ruins Halo 5s story. Chief should have returned to infinity, have a psych eval and when he is told that Cortana is dead and then he would AWOL which would make ‘Hunt the Bullsh*t’ have something to do with the story as the player would have to decide wether Chief was right or whether he was crazy and has gone rogue. Then we have fan favourite characters like Blue Team, Arbiter and Buck returning but since they don’t remotely effect the story they might aswell have never been in the game.
  1. The lack of content.

As we all know halo 5 launched with a huge lack of content at launch with it taking months for us to get Infection, Grifball, FREAKING FORGE!!! But what if I told you that halo 5 is missing a lot more content than you think… Halo 5 takes gametypes and brands them as gamemodes. Halo 5s slayer is what I call Team Slayer : a variant of the gamemode slayer, halo 5s infection is Alpha Zombies : a variant of Infection, Halo 5s assault is nuetral bomb : a variant of assault. Halo 5s capture the flag is Multi Flag : a variant of CTF. Since this has happened halo 5 has lost its replay value that every other halo game (even halo 4) had.

  1. The gameplay

The gameplay isn’t as bad as halo 4’s, but it’s not much better. I’m a firm believer that sprint and ads don’t belong in a halo game. Now some of you may like sprint but before you start hating let me explain why I don’t like sprint. I don’t like sprint because it is the main reason on why halo 5 has such a bad map design. The halo 5 maps are built from the ground to support mechanics like sprint and smart scope so the map flows well with the gameplay. In halo 5 if lockout was in halo 5 people could sprint all over the place then the map flow would be ruined. My solution : get rid of sprint and stick to the classic map design. Sprint also makes you unready for battle and you’re not always on guard and most importantly sprint makes someone who is being shot at to run away and survive. I hate smart scope as it heavily increases weapon range and accuracy which allows for shooting across the map. However, as in halo 3 the scope blocked most of your field of view but in halo 5 you have much more visibility and leaves other players screwed. I’m not even going to bother describing Spartan charge. Thruster and clamber are okay and I wouldn’t care to see them go or stay but halo 6 can’t have sprint, smart scope and Spartan charge.

  1. The UI

Halo 5s UI is terrible. When we go into customisation it’s so unorganised we have to scroll through hundreds of armours and helmets just to equip the one we want. The main menu is just boring (still love the grunt Easter egg though). Halo 5’s pre game lobby’s are not just a disgrace to halo’s previous pre game lobby’s but a disgrace to every pre game lobby ever made. In reach’s pre game lobby we could see someone’s gamertag, emblem, rank, service record, clan, if they had a mic, commendation progress and challenge progress where in halo 5 we see their emblem. Oh, and we still can’t sell one req at a time…

  1. The Customisation

It’s safe to say that halo 5 has a terrible customisation system. There are STILL no playable elites. The armour customisation system has been so dumbed down that it’s worse than halo 3. There are over 220 armours and helmets which 89 of them aren’t paint jobs, and 18 of those 89 were originally designed by bungie. That leaves around 130 armour paint jobs which really are lines going down the middle. Then we have armour like seeker, tracer, foehammer, legionnaire and cyclops…

  1. The ranking system

Now I have two bigs things concerning the ranking system in terms of why I hate it. Firstly it outright ripped off League of Legends ranking system and secondly the fact that you can only rank up by winning or losing instead of how well you performed is ridiculous. So let’s say I’m a noob but my team are really good then I slightly rank up. It should be based of skill, not winning or losing.

  1. The REQ system

RNG unlocks, makes ranking up look unimportant and microtransactions. Enough said.

  1. The maps

I’ve already mentioned the poor map design due to the inclusion of the Spartan abilities. Even after being promised +15 maps post launch we still have a huge lack of maps today in halo 5. The following list does not contain forged maps that are in BTB, Grifball so Orion and Pegasus don’t count. Here are all of halo 5s original arena maps :
. Coliseum
. Truth (Midship remake)
. Plaza
. The Rig
. Fathom
. Empire
. Torque
. Mercy (Haven remake)

  • Out of these 8 maps 5 are human themed, 2 are Covenant themed and 1 is forerunner themed. Here are all the remixed arena maps :. Overgrowth
    . Tyrant
    . Regret
    . Eden
    . Riptide
    . Molten
    . Stasis

  • Out of those 7 maps, 5 are human themed, 1 is Covenant themed and 1 is forerunner themedHere are all the original Warzone maps :

    . Battle of Noctus
    . Skimirsh at Darkstar
    . Attack on Sanctum

  • Out of these 6 maps, 4 are human themed, 1 is forerunner themed and 1 is covenant themed. These maps are simply the other 6 maps but parts of the map is cut off and the whether is different… That leaves us with 26 (non forge) maps, with only 15 original maps and 18 are human themed.

Conclusion : I still enjoy playing halo 5 but there are so many issues I have with the game that it has become my least favourite halo game of all time. It’s a genuine pity to see my favourite franchise in this state.

I think we all know that 343 messed up already, even 343 knows.
Its best now to move on and encourage better games

Because there are so much forge maps that I have lost count. Some have been removed and some have been added, it’s a mess.

I like the req system, I like that I can call in badass weapons/vehicles whenever I want. That’s what makes warzone so fun, that the game can be changed so quick.

I agree with you about the story but when it comes to multiplayer, this is the best halo ever.

I don’t mind forge maps at all and have never cared for map asthetics. One difference between h5 and h3 tho is h3 had dev maps to go with the forge maps where as h5 has some playlists being exclusive forge maps only with no dev maps to them.

to me it seems people just don’t like bland forge maps (when it comes to asthetics) as they’re not made like a dev map would be. Gameplay wise it all comes down to creativity. Forge maps can easily play better than any dev map out their if you’ve got the community willing to do it.

The only point that you make that I don’t agree with is your point about the gameplay, I actually feel like it’s one of the better Halo games in term gameplay. Although I do agree that Spartan charge should go.

This is probably the main thing I take issue with. Halo is a game that encourages teamwork in order to perform well. If the ranking system were based off of individual skill only, it would promote a more selfish playstyle, reducing any cooperation between team members.

I realize Halo 5’s ranking system isn’t perfect. I’d prefer it have individual skill, opponent skill, and whether or not you win or lose weighted equally when deciding final rank.

I forgot to mention this so sorry for any inconvenience : The Req System is a great idea that was executed poorly with random unlocks, microtransactions and many other issues. I highly recommend that you watch The Act Mans video on how the req system could have been improved which shows ways the req system could have been better.

I’d think the devs should keep sprint, but make a classic playlist without sprint, and maps that are specifically designed for classic mode, but no forge maps, just dev maps.

ok why does Foehammer armor get so much hate? Sure it’s a bit forehead-heavy but it does not deserve to be lumped in with Seeker and Tracer. You could have picked a million different, far uglier armors to throw into that list such as Recluse or Atlas or Nomad or Vector…Foehammer is just not on the same level. I would say it’s one of the more decent armors.

I 100 percent agree with the ranking system. I’ll carry my whole team in slayer doing the best in the game by far but still lose rank because the random on my team suck.

god do i miss bungie though…theyre games were absolutly amazing, if you want to support 343 and try to make the best out of their games fine, i respect that, its just that it would be nice to have bungie back and have halo be as popular as call of duty again, like the old days. 343 made 2 halo games already and both of them dont come anywhere near as good as bungies.

Agreed 100%. Best Halo multiplayer by far. If people want the classic Halo experience there are plenty of old Halo games for them to play.

I agreed with the story and ui but not with the lack of contant.
the ranking system on the other hand is bad. if you get set in a low rank and you are a good halo player is dumb because you are always stuck with teammates that don’t know how to play halo. it is frustrating because you have the skill to win but your team alway loses for you.

I don’t anyone considers forge maps as real maps, especially when the dev makes them, and no one should. They have the tools to make real ones, yet artificially

The same can be said for people who like new Halo. Go play H4 and Reach if you want sprint, leave Halo alone.

inflating the map count with forge maps and remixes is incredibly stupid.

Maybe it is the worst Halo but if you compare it with other games its fine. Halo 5 is an average game like others due to the gameplay. Also nowadays the games are going from bad to wrose thx to the marketing. I am playing Halo since HaloCE. I loved Halo because the game always need a technique to beat the game. The game offered you a great campaign experience and multiplayer (Halo 2 had xbox live). In conclusion Halo was a game for everyone (campaign,multiplayer or both). Now 343 focus on multiplayer but they create the same multiplayer like other games. In my oppinion Halo isn’t dead it does changing due to the marketing. That happens to all games now. All games now are the same, DLC, MICROTRANSACTIONS. So I can’t blame 343 for that situation in Halo because in the end it is our ( me and other consumers) fault. All the games change. And yes i am sad to watching my favorite video game turning into that. Halo 5 story some people like some other didn’t, it’s their choice. Personally i dont like halo 5 story. The gameplay story even in Legendary it feels the same. Also why they changed Art-style? ( even Bungie ) Multiplayer is the same like other fps games. Same matchmaking system same spawns.
