Why Halo was special. To me.

What makes Halo special to me is that it’s so simple so that it gets complicated, like chess. You have a weapon, a grenade and your fist and you fought with the same simple mechanics like everyone else. What made it complex was when you looked deeper into the mechancis and discovered that you could use them for so much more than what the actually can do and it actually making sense.

Halo is special to me because it’s not hard to get into. It’s an easy learning curve, it’s easy to have fun in and you can do so much in it! It was slow, and should be, so it gave you time to think of what you should do each game, it allowed you to explore.

Halo is unique because it’s oldschool but feels so modern without the mechanics like sprint, clamber, jetpacks or ADS. It was so like that new kid on the street who is tiny but could beat the biggest kid in the neighboorhood. There is no need to have all those new mechanics, the game works just as fine if not better without them!

And that’s just the casual part. The competetive part isn’t opposite. It’s the evolved part. An evoluution without change. You played the same game the others at the casual party did, but you used those sneaky tricks you trained on to outsmart your friends. You came up with strategies, you could make the games faster without changing a single factor just by grabbing the sniper on the other side of the map because no one else could use, they thought it was too hard to use and ignored it but you trained, you gained! You play the same game but on a different level.
It amazes me. It amazed those who never played it.

Halo is special to me because it’s not just any ordinary shooter. It’s a racing game, a survival zombie game, it’s a competetive strategic game, it’s a boardgame (Jenga ex), it could be any other shooter ever by changing simple settings whilst other shooters couldn’t even come NEAR it.

It’s so sad to see such a franchise go down because of players who think that EVERY shooter need to be resembling eachother so they don’t have a hard time playing when switching between them. It used to be “You can play Halo you can play any other shooters but if you can play any other shooters you can’t play Halo” But now It’s “You can play Halo you can play any other shooters and vice versa.”.

Tell me what made Halo special to you.

The campaign. I’ve always played Halo for the story and campaign, they have been so good and enjoyable to play. It’s why I keep coming back

Honestly, Halo would feel awfully outdated if they didn’t add any new gameplay features. After playing the older Halos in the Master Chieg Collection, I find the gameplay extremely slow and dull. While they blew the competition out of the water at the time, Halo is now a small fish in a big pond. It needs to evolve to avoid being eaten by a bigger fish.

I think the word you were looking for was ‘nostalgic’. And the word people who play other fps’s and havent tried halo are going to think is ‘archaic’ and it will discourage them from trying it. Halo either catches up with other series in terms of mechanics or it will be doomed to a niche existance on the multiplayer front, for good or ill. On the single-player front it blows just about any other fps out of the water without even trying, though.

In all honesty the simplicity is what I wanted change. I felt like I was a stiff toy soldier by the time halo 4 came out, and not a super soldier. I’m glad 343 is revitalising the movement.

You mean like it did with Halo Reach, Halo 4 and Halo 5 which have failed majorly, well not Halo 5 what we know but it’s just a question of time.

Mechanics isn’t everything that makes a game modern. It’s also the UI, the content like ranks, forge, theatre or a spectator mode. Halo would be more modern if the campaign became more open world, new type of ranking system, massive forge and support for machinimas than what sprint, classes or ADS would do. Halo’s formula was perfect, why make it more like another game instead of improving what already works? If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, improve it.

From a campaign standpiont I can agree but when it comes to multiplayer, not so much. Lore and logic shouldn’t interfeer with mechanics unless it’s a new IP. Since Halo already had a working formula then why change it? For the sake of lore? Nah, it’s too late for that.

I feel H5G is evolving off the trio.

Also by that logic H2 and H3 are bad.

Halo 5 is evolving more off Halo 4 with an influence of the classics. And do you care to explain why Halo 2 and 3 would be considered bad with what logic?

H2 and H3 play as close to CE as H2 plays to H5G (IMO) . Also the first part of what you said is opinion.

Yeaaah…Here’s the thing: all that stuff about UI and custom games simply don’t interest the mass market player. They are going to pick up the controller and expect to be entertained by a match or two, preferably without being frustrated. If you throw a game with mechanics that are stuck in the era of the original Xbox at them, they are going to roll their eyes at first and then grow increasingly frustrated as they are used to fluid movement and fast moving matches. Then they are going to stop playing and propably reconsider buying a Halo game again. They don’t do machinimas, likely won’t bother with custom matches, won’t really notice the UI and most of them won’t give a yoink about ranks. Like it or not, the Casual Gamer is the pillar that keeps the games industry going and going against the Casual Gamer is suicidal if you want your game to actually make money without microtransactions or other such skullduggery.

The first I said, about Halo Reach and Halo 4 is not opinion, it’s fact. Halo went down in such high numbers it’s still visible. Halo 5 is only to wait and see but I predict it’ll have the same fate. I’ve just give facts so far. Halo 5 has more similarities to Halo 4 than to Halo CE - 3, that is a fact.

And how does H2 play more to H5?

Fast kill times, fluid movement, map control, same starts. You dodged what I said, H2 and H3 play nothing like HCE. Bold is opinion.

> Fast kill times, fluid movement, map control, same starts. You dodged what I said, H2 and H3 play nothing like HCE. Bold is opinion.

H2 doen’t have fast kill times compared to H5, it’s fairly slow unless you know how to make perfect quadshots and land them. The movement might be fluid but more risky, faster and allows you to make stupid plays and excape. Map controll is not for all games, all Halo’s require map controll, damn every shooter in the world needs that. Though in Halo 5 you can be more of a onemanarmy thany could on the other titles because it’s turned into a first see first kill.
It has fast kill times, like CE, but the shots are so much easier to hit because of the crazy bullet magnetism, which Halo CE didn’t have which techically made it slower.

Same starts is the only thing that has been influenced from the old Halo’s, the rest is just Halo 4 with some mechanics reworked. You can literally play a dumbed down version of Halo 5 within Halo 4 with a mechanic or two removed but you can’t play H5 within the classics. Just that shows how widely different it is.
