Why Halo Players Need To Let The Past Go

Looking over any given forum, you typically will find one or two threads demanding that 343 revert Halo 4 and Reach’s settings to that of Halo 3’s. I have a message for those players:

Let the past go.

The series has moved on, and it’s time to accept that. I will admit that Halo 4 showed me just how much lost potential Reach had, but both 4 and, yes, to a lesser extent, Reach, have added so many great elements to the series.

SPRINTING
People say that sprinting is an Op get out of jail tool, and yes in Reach it was, but how much has it added to the game? Playing a game of Halo 3 recently, I found it almost unbearably slow, with long, boring slogs between duels. I use sprinting to close the gap between encounters and to hunt down the flag bearer in CTF.

WEAPONS
Why do so many people hate the DMR? In Reach, it was a good gun marred by bloom, but in Halo 4, it has developed into the force of nature I think Bungie intended it to be. The Energy sword, Carbine, and Needler all feel perfectly tuned, and new additions like the Sticky detonator, Railgun, and Promethian weapons all add wonderful depth to the game.

Loadouts and Armor Mods
I admit that I felt somewhat hesitant when 343 announced these, but now that the game is here, I love them. Remember how in Halo 3 and Reach everybody started with the BR and DMR in slayer? Well, loadouts are just like that, except now you can start with the gun you want, not one you hate or aren’t comfortable with. As for specializations, the aren’t Op, nor do they make the game into some twisted version of COD. Each one has their specific role, and each feel like they are trying to grind the edges off of your game, not turn it into a crutch.

Sure, some of the complaints are valid, like the ghost being too easily destroyed, but on the whole, Halo 4 was a huge success and the record numbers the game generated stands testament. It’s ok to love classics. I myself am hoping for a Halo 2 remake, but the past is the past. Let it go and embrace the amazing future that is Halo 4.

the problem is.

halo is a sequal to past halos, sequal ALWAYS build upon the past, saying to let the past go just proves that you do not understand this, if we let the past go, and let 343 continue with the direct they are heading, we will soon end up be able to call futuristic predtor strikes, ending the game upon getting a kill frenzy by ordering a orbital mac strike, be able to aim down our iron sights, and will be able to reset our levels for a fancy gold rank instead of white…

I bought Halo 4 thinking that it would actually be Halo 4. I was wrong. MM is dead in my eyes.

Since when has 343 said they will add iron sights to the game?
As for killstreak rewards and MAC strikes, I would be outraged if these features were implimented. I do not see any moves on 343’s part that approach anything near this level of change. Also, if you are saying Halo;'s build upon each other, why are you and others calling for a return to Halo 2 and 3?

We need to let go but also revert back to the halo 2 days. As in creating custom games with less options.

I see a lot of cant and or will nots with very few I tried.

Come on we did it with halo 2. We can do it again.

Indeed. Many people need to accept that the old way is not the only way. It’s as Halo as any of the others.

So we just have to sit here are watch Halo die a slow death just so it can try desperately and pathetically to rip off other games?

Why can’t Halo keep it’s core that made it so mind bogglingly successful and improve upon them with each game like that other game that is now significantly more popular?

Maybe 343i should take a few pages out of the PC side of gaming, like say a custom game browser.

So basically, Halo 2/3 + a couple new guns or vehicles in each sequel.

It’s okay, we all know what you want.

I agree that Halo 4 is inflexible in terms of custom games (race? hello?).
I don’t think that Halo 4 is perfect, all I’m saying is that we should be enjoying a damn good game, not bemoaning it’s small flaws.

Exactly.or maybe we could set up parties by inviting all on our friend list to custom games even when they are playing other games. Like the old xbl 1 days.
I tryed getting people to come up with ways to make custom games. But the threads died and got buried in the normal dribble and hate.

One of the qualms I have with Halo 4 currently is the lack of user created content. I’m sure this is normal for a new game (I entered halfway through Reach) but its still dissapointing considering the sheer stream of unique gametypes in Reach and 3.

> all add wonderful depth to the game.

Meh.

Reskins or slight variations don’t really add any depth.

It keeps the same basic game alive over the years for people to keep enjoying.

Works for Call of Duty.

There is so much stuff not working properly currently with the game that people are not even giving the new stuff a chance.

343 NEEDED to give a kick butt experience from the start to have the community slowly settle over all the new stuff but this isn’t happening. And because this isn’t happening everything else becomes a bigger problem.

Aren’t most people afraid of Halo mimicing Cod?
I for one want to be able to identify between two games, not just Cod title update 1 and Cod title update 2.

> Halo 4 was a huge success and the record numbers the game generated stands testament.

No, the record numbers were due in large part to a previously established fan base which was due to Bungie. Another large part is advertising, hyping up sales.

Lets see how many people are online one year from now, THAT will be the testament.
Judge 343’s success based on how many people will still play.
Do NOT judge it based on people like me who bought it expecting so much more, because we are not satisfied, and we do not give “Testament” to this game.
I am not satisfied, but I’m a fair man and I’ll wait for 343 to announce planned changes, then seeing them implemented before making a final judgement.

@ BWO Arbiter post you back in a year ;).

Wow, another group of Halo fanboys unimpressed by 343’s decision to try and improve on previously established games. CoD DID NOT make the loadouts mods and such, they were already around but CoD revived and improved it.

Halo: 4 is 343 and Microsoft’s PET PROJECT. It is trying to keep the Halo feel while making CoD fans THINK they will like it. These features are solely thin veils to make the CoD fanboys to want to check this out. It also adds a highly competitive and balanced multiplayer. More so than any other Halo game.

It was never drifting away from Halo’s ideas. It was simply adding on. Fanboys are usually very short-sighted, nostalgic loving, change hating critics who cannot accept change. You make fun of CoD fanboys for not liking the Halo games “because it’s different”, but you are doing that to Halo 4. I bet hardly any of you have played both Halo 4 AND CoD intensively enough to understand the differences.

I never said I disliked Cod, I just feel that there is little to no change between any two given titles in the series from MW on.

I don’t even…

First off I doubt there’s a huge influx of players from Call of Duty to Halo 4. They probably didn’t even research halo 4 because they don’t play Halo. If there are people from call of duty it’s probably because they have been long time fans of BOTH series (yeah news flash, a lot of people own games from both of the series, shocker isn’t it?) Where are you guys even coming up from this crap…Halo 4 doesn’t even look remotely like CoD on the surface unless you look into it. It’s not like Call of Duty players see Halo 4 and instantly think “Oh -Yoink- this is just like CoD I better go buy it!”

The only people buying Halo 4 are probably long time Halo players. I doubt most people are starting the series with halo 4.

Making fun of them for not liking Halo because it’s different? No, I make fun of them for reasons that aren’t even remotely related to Halo.

> It also adds a highly competitive and balanced multiplayer. More so than any other Halo game.

>Get Power weapon.
>Rack up kills with power weapon.
>Earn Ordnance drops to get more power weapons.
>Repeat process.
>5.00 k/d

Look at my past 10 games or so for an example.

The later call of duty games fixed this issue by making it so killstreaks didn’t count towards more killstreaks. Halo 4 still has this issue.

And I would know that because, contrary to your beliefs, I HAVE played a lot of CoD.
