Looking over any given forum, you typically will find one or two threads demanding that 343 revert Halo 4 and Reach’s settings to that of Halo 3’s. I have a message for those players:
Let the past go.
The series has moved on, and it’s time to accept that. I will admit that Halo 4 showed me just how much lost potential Reach had, but both 4 and, yes, to a lesser extent, Reach, have added so many great elements to the series.
SPRINTING
People say that sprinting is an Op get out of jail tool, and yes in Reach it was, but how much has it added to the game? Playing a game of Halo 3 recently, I found it almost unbearably slow, with long, boring slogs between duels. I use sprinting to close the gap between encounters and to hunt down the flag bearer in CTF.
WEAPONS
Why do so many people hate the DMR? In Reach, it was a good gun marred by bloom, but in Halo 4, it has developed into the force of nature I think Bungie intended it to be. The Energy sword, Carbine, and Needler all feel perfectly tuned, and new additions like the Sticky detonator, Railgun, and Promethian weapons all add wonderful depth to the game.
Loadouts and Armor Mods
I admit that I felt somewhat hesitant when 343 announced these, but now that the game is here, I love them. Remember how in Halo 3 and Reach everybody started with the BR and DMR in slayer? Well, loadouts are just like that, except now you can start with the gun you want, not one you hate or aren’t comfortable with. As for specializations, the aren’t Op, nor do they make the game into some twisted version of COD. Each one has their specific role, and each feel like they are trying to grind the edges off of your game, not turn it into a crutch.
Sure, some of the complaints are valid, like the ghost being too easily destroyed, but on the whole, Halo 4 was a huge success and the record numbers the game generated stands testament. It’s ok to love classics. I myself am hoping for a Halo 2 remake, but the past is the past. Let it go and embrace the amazing future that is Halo 4.
