This is just a bit of a guess on why halo 5 might feel to competitive when it sort of anymore then the hundreds of other games out there. Honestly I think it comes down to the weapons.
In Halo 5 there aren’t any “noob” weapons. Nothing for someone who’s not so great at the game to cling, hold on to and do well with. The AR used to satisfy this but now it alienates less skilled players because of the high amount of bloom. I’m not saying automatics are less skillful weapons I’m saying that there needs to be a weapon that everyone can use and use well. Something that is always in there hands regardless of gamemode and can be exchanged for a better piece the moment the game and when you respawn so that veteran players can still excel.
The AR or whatever gun that could possibly be made to fill this role could still keep their precision damage but it’d need to be something a ten year old can us well. I say that because I’m pretty sure a massive amount of the community we’re very young when they first started playing Halo.
A weapon with a low skill floor and an average skill ceiling for those of you who understand that better. Something akin to the lance or the OG AR.
Honestly come to think of it with the way Halo 5 went about the reqs we could very likely have different iterations of the various guns in thought Halo in Halo 6. We could have an MA5B with 60 bullets, no recoil or drop and the MA5D with bloom and powerful precision damage.
Actually that sounds pretty awesome if you ask me.
Like the thread if you agree and if you didn’t please explain why.
I have a hard time seeing people’s points about the ar in halo 5 taking lots of skill to use. I always find it easier to use then in the older games. Not my favorite, but it feels okay.
Maybe that’s just me, but I guess I’d like to see others thoughts on the ar.
Agreed, OP. People who think Halo 5 weapons are easy to use are people who are well along the skill curve and have simply forgotten what it’s like to be challenged by a gun. The H5 AR is a perfect example. I know it has a lot of stopping power compared to previous ARs, but it kicks up like an SMG, it blooms like a Reach BR, and it is for me completely unaimable. Maybe there’s some trick to it I haven’t figured out yet, maybe I’ve “lost it,” maybe I’ve just got too impatient with things that take practice. But I don’t see why, after six Halos and fifteen years, I should have to re-learn it’s most basic weapon. Again.

> What? H5 is the game that empowers incredibly easy to use weapons the most by far out of any halo game.
And yet it’s still viewed as a highly competitive game despite even upon release having half if MP dedicated to casual play. Perhaps you’re just more attuned to Halo 5 then the others in the franchise.
Spartan abilities and AR seem to be the easiest weapon/attacks to use in H5. I think the competitive nature stems from the play lists more than anything tangible in game.
My wife played H5 for the first time (first halo, and probably one of the only fps she’s ever played). She preferred the AR, except she felt she had to melee to finish and get kills. She avoided magnum and every other weapps in that experience. She thought the frag grenades were too weak though.
Frag grenades used to be a easy to learn and hard to perfect weapon.

H5 is not a fit competive game. You’ll see pro players even say it’s to easy, rewards lesser skilled play, ect ect. I’m shocked that you’d even say the AR of all weapons is hard to use. You then have precision weapons having more magnetism to them than ever before. H5 is not competitive by how it’s weapons function.

Majority of the comp community want a settings change, but you probably didn’t know that. The majority who think its the best have literally no idea on what a skilled shooter.

I disagree that it isn’t competitive, however, the ar is definitely easy to use. I would say that the skill gap in the game is largely based on the advanced movement in the game that allows quick escape routes. Precision with weapons is still important but due to bullet magnetism and aim assist I think strafe and knowledgeable positioning provides more of a skill gap now.
To the op, idk how you can say that there aren’t low skill weapons in the game. The ar, smg, storm rifle, etc are all examples of low skill weapons in the game. If they put anything else easy to use in the game then the skill gap from diamond to onyx to champ would greatly decrease because players would be forced to participate in op low skilled play. I get that the game is difficult, but without that difficulty many players wouldn’t play the game. This isn’t cod, and, as so many lesser skilled players have said to skilled players regarding autos, adapt to the weapons you have.

The AR is easier to use now than it ever has been before. It’s effective range is better and you can even use it at a distance if you pace your shots. Anyone can pick it up and use it with a reasonable degree of effectiveness. I also don’t see a connection between how easy to use weapons are and how competitive the game feels.

No no no, I’m in no way saying it isn’t competitive, just not in terms of weapon play. I can agree it’s new movement focus is part of where that competitiveness goes towards but in terms of gun play no. The sniper has the largest hitbox ever, automatics are to easy to use for their short ttk, half the precision weapons have huge magnetism to them and there’s radar in play with certain abilities benefiting because of it.

Ok I understand you now, thanks for clarification.
I agree. Im a good player but dont want to play competitive 8/10 times. Just want to sit back, chill, and get some RP. I always have to play firefight : (
Wait. Did OP just say that the H5 AR has the highest amount of bloom in the entire series? OP, you are seriously mistaken. The H5 AR has the least amount of bloom of all the ARs before it.
Yeah, sorry to say, but the Assault Rifle was never the weapon everybody could pick up and use and play decently. That was the Battle Rifle, especially with the crazy spread in Halo 3. The Assault Rifle, was literal, garbage, in previous titles, usually the precision weapon outclassed it in every scenario, distance, and what not. Now it can and will usually be the weapon everyone can pick up, the jack of all trades, master of none.

The AR was completely unusable as an actual weapon until at least Halo 4. Why do you think everyone chose BRs when the chance came up in 3, or DMRs in Reach? Im pretty sure my automatic weapons commendation in Reach is still bronze, while I’ve onyx’d quite a few others for that very reason.

Because Bungie never figured out how to effectively balance weapons (cough dual wielding cough) and put them in their niche role and continues to fail to do so even today with Destiny?

I just finished grinding to Rank 5 in Iron Banner today. You sir, are entirely bloody correct. Balance is literally NON EXISTENT.
So in tying back into the actual comment thread; I’d say the AR is not a “noob friendly” gun but you’re bloody wrong if your saying its still unusable.

I was saying it was unusable in the previous games, whereas it is finally useful in Halo 5, even though it excels in CQC it can still do some work if used properly at mid-range.

Agreed completely. It fills the space between the ultra-close range of the SMG and the medium range of the Magnum and BR.
The list goes, from closest to longest;
SMG, AR, Magnum, BR, DMR.
