Halo 5 is great. Just in general. I’m finding out more and more that while I still enjoy playing other games, this is the only one I truly care about and actively play / grind / party up with friends to spend time on. I’ve played the game a total of 15 days I believe and my enjoyment has hardly stopped since launch. Despite completing several “goals” within Halo 5, I still have more I want to work on constantly.
Completed the campaign solo legendary. Some epic memories there. - Completed the intel / collectables. - Completed the Enemy and Weapons commendations. - Completed all of the REQ system, short of the ones I need to buy (and debating doing that). And despite all of that, I still want to…
Complete the campaign co-op, legendary (four levels in). - Reach SR152 (eventually, may never happen, but 140 currently). - Reach Onyx level of competitive play (the one time I tried with a group of four, ranked Diamond 6, so definitely achievable!). - Complete the personal commendations (only a handful to go for Vehicle, Game Mode, and MP). - Complete all of the Spartan Company commendations (again, only a handful to go in each type). And all of that isn’t even mentioning that I’ve yet to play Warzone as it was meant to be played (typically sell all of my REQ cards to get the ones I need for commendations), I haven’t ever touched Forge, and have only played like three custom games since launch, which is a whole other can of worms for crazy gametypes and community projects. All of that to reinforce my point - Halo 5 is great.
I agree. This is an amazing game. There are a lot of features and design decisions that leave me cold personally, but that doesn’t stop me from recognizing that objectively this game is a home run.
And if you haven’t done req-heavy Warzone, forge, or customs yet, then you really haven’t even played Halo 5! Get in there and mix it up a little!
As someone who played the older Halos growing up I just can’t agree. Good that you enjoy it, but the game has gone in the wrong direction imo. Placing unnecessary mechanics in the game that I feel are a detriment. The campaign has paled to previous games and it has signaled a tonal shift that is less goofy while serious and just more serious while being I guess flat?
Microtransactions feel too aggressive and anything you have to earn is either too easy to get or is restricted to extra content not everyone wants to pay for or is tied to being in a clan, something I am not enthusiastic about. Armor customization has been reduced and is mostly RNG per the loot system and the game feels too grindy where previous Halos were about playing I feel like if I want armor I have to grind through matches to have a chance at it.
The MP is hyper competitive where Halo 3 had the balance to a tee. Some mechanics are gimmicky and the matchmaking as well as the spawns are terrible. Map design pales to previous Halos as well. BTB was sacrificed for the sake of warzone, which again I feel is inferior as well as an attempt to push microtransactions even harder In a full retail price game. A lot of content was absent at launched and added back for free yet marketed as “great new free content” maps were remixed excessively instead of being made from scratch and anything they do add back in is always somehow linked to the req system.
Again I’m not taking any shots at you. Glad you enjoy the game, but where you find greatness I only see vast amounts of disappointment in a developer that is taking one of my favorite franchises in the wrong direction, at least to me.
I’ve played Halo since the beginning. And I love how 343 has taken Halo into this new direction. The gameplay, the mechanics, the overall feel. It’s not perfect, and it’s definitely not Bungie-era Halo. But I love it.
Halo 4 and Halo 5 are probably my most favorite in the franchise. And I’ve played since the beginning.
If I could rate Halo 5 out of 10. I’d give it a 9.5
It probably would be a 10 to me if some of the lead directors didn’t step out during production.
What they have done with Forge is just amazing. I’m not sure if some people are truly appreciating the awesomeness of Halo 5 Forge. The number of objects and types of objects is insane. Seemingly an infinite number of ways to customize everything. I’m seeing some great maps that have been made (that weren’t even possible in previous Halo games) but I think people have only scratched the surface of what is possible with Forge now. I’m still waiting to find a great map that was forged on the Depths canvas. Anyone know of any? Great potential there.
I have a hard time calling it a GREAT game. I will say it’s good but not really great. It a good as it brings a good competitive game play. But the campaign not being awesome and having little to no replay value. Campaign/score attack achievements were easy to get really. They have some good multiplayer maps but with so many arena maps being remixes they have the same general feel most of the time.
I understand where you are coming from OP as this game has been one of the only ones i casually return to. The gameplay is satisfying and addicting. The mix of community playlists and maps only add more content and it’s refreshing to play a game with this amount of community work. It quenches my thirst for a Halo game but not entirely. The game feels more like a Battlestar: Galactica as opposed to an Aliens (1986). Both are good but one of them is more intimate with the marine aspect. This game is good, but it’s not grounded in a MILITARY sci-fi shooter. Spartan-IV’s feel like professional athletes rather than bred for war badass soldiers. The game is good but the vibe is off for me.
Halo 5’s multiplayer is great. The campaign is laughably bad. Halo 5 is a good game, halo 3 is a great game. I have loads of fun on halo 5 and having a friend who only now got an Xbox one adds a whole new layer of fun…but I wouldn’t call the game “great”
I absolutely adore this game. The graphics, the multiplayer, the campaign (yes, I just said that), the forge, the reqs, and almost everything about this game is what I would expect of a sci-fi shooter. Congratulations, 343i, and good luck topping this title!
While I don’t mind playing it, Halo 5 is not my favorite in the series. I’ll always have Halo CE as my favorite personally due to the experience I had with it.
However, that doesn’t mean I can’t commend Halo 5 for the amazing additions it made to the series, such as the best forge to ever release in any Halo, as well as the greatest weapon balancing I have ever seen in any Halo title.
It’s really not, not compared to Bungie’s Halo stuff anyway. Maybe when compared to the likes of COD. I’ve moved on to Overwatch. Pretty fun and the control scheme and general battle mechanics seem to more closely resemble the old Halo games…

I’m honestly a little disappointed about forge, but understand how great it is. Some of my best memories from reach and 4 are of screwing around on forge with friends, quickly making bases and blowing each other up in banshees. Now it’s like a full CAD program, and while I know that’s led to some beautiful creations and it definitely shouldn’t go, I would still like a simplified version to have fun in.

This. There aren’t enough of you people around here.
Lol, Halo 5 isn’t great by any means. It’s bearable at least. Campaign sucked so badly I puked at the ending. RNG is stupid, and the customization is trash. Other than that it’s alright. Recruit Charred armor for life.
