Why Halo 5 is comparable to H4

I hate to admit it, I was hugely on the hype train for H5 and was adamant that it would be the game of the year. Sadly, it isn’t even close to where it should be. With it being behind games like Division, Destiny, Black Ops 3, and more - it continues to decline in popularity. What can be done? Is it too late? Can Halo 6 fix the Halo series as we know it?

So I ask you, what can be done?

I do agree that Reach didn’t help the Halo series, BUT - it was still a better game (IMO) than H4 and H5 once bloom and the first couple updates were released. Because lets be real, you can’t base the game off what it was at launch. H5 at launch? Flop of the year, slight improvement at where it stands today.

I wish 343 would stick to the roots of Halo and kept upkeep on weapons, dynamics, story and graphics. Leave the core of the game alone, which (new gen kids won’t like hearing it) means getting rid of sprint, etc.

Lets look at CounterStrike for example, like it or not it is one of the most popular games on the planet and has basically been the same game for 10 years.

Lets look at Call of Duty, while still more popular than Halo - the decline Call of Duty has seen is closely related to Halo’s - adding more and more features that take the game too far - when will it end? Will Master Chief have wings soon? Will he be able to move through walls?

And lastly, lets look at the advancement from Halo 2 to Halo 3, the core of the game was almost identical - much better graphics and slightly different dynamics. However, weapons and equipment were updated - vehichles, power ups, equipment, etc.

What needs to be done?

Well I do agree we should have a Halo game that feels like Halo, I do NOT feel we should be going back to the roots and ONLY the roots, I think what we need is a balanced mix of classic and modern Halo into one single game.

I think H2a’s multiplayer got it right. Modern graphics with classic gameplay. It added the gungoose to keep things fresh. That’s really all that was needed. That is what Halo 5 should have been.

^ Yes.

Halo 4’s biggest faults were its CoD-inspired features such as perks, killstreaks, and loadouts. Halo 5 removed those and implemented new movement mechanics that, in my opinion, work well with the sandbox. Like MrMartini put it, Halo 5 is like a modernized Halo 3 because it follows the latter’s rules. Err, I feel like that last part is a tongue twister.

Anyway, while Halo 5 is fairly decisive, the more universal complaints with which most people agree on have nothing to do with gameplay. They’re comparable to a certain degree, but I think Halo 5 is an improvement over Halo 4 on everything but campaign, theater mode, and, I suppose, BTB.

All of you people forget that when you say we need the classic gameplay, you’re forgetting about the ones who prefer halo 5’s gameplay over halo 3’s.

Halo 5 is a natural evolution of Halo 4, which is awesome since Halo 4 was my favorite halo out of all games prior to Halo 5’s release. Halo 5 improved upon the assassinations (so many new ones), movement (e.g. ground pound), vehicle variants, and especially Forge. However, it is still inferior to Halo 4 in terms of playlists (no dominion, ricochet, oddball, KOTH, BTB infinity slayer, team heavies, regicide, action sack, etc.)

If Halo 5 was released as it is now, it would have retained far more people. 343 has a bad habit of releasing an unpolished product.

Halo 4 was a turd and there is no amount of polishing that could make that game great.

How to make Halo great again:

  • Get rid of 343 Incompetencies and replace them with a developer that knows what made Halo great (and fail). - Retcon all events after Halo 3 and cavemen fighting Forerunners. - Apologies for everything 343 Incompetencies has done to the franchise and promise not to make them again. - Let Halo take a hiatus to let these deep wounds heal and to allow extra development time to make a very complete and content packed game on day 1 that looks, sounds, and feels like an actual Halo game.

But. Aleast it had alot of content at launch, all I’m gonna say. Imagine if H5 had as much content as H4 did at launch.

“Because lets be real, you can’t base the game off what it was at launch.”

Then when can we base it off of? Halo 4 lost half it’s player base in under a month.

But anyways, all of this sounds a lot like the changes from Halo CE to Halo 2, and there were a LOT of changes, not all well received. More changes than even Halo 5 brought in.

You don’t provide any reason Halo 4 is comparable to halo 5. Instead you whine about COD. Quite a bit changed from H2 to H3 as well.

I suppose if they make a Halo game that has everything working, and all the expected game types and extras, then they shouldn’t have to change it.

These days people expect to get a full game, not a game with things missing. We don’t want to wait another year after Halo 6’s release to have all the content.

It’s a pity because halo 4 had a terrible multiplayer with a decent amount of content at launch while halo 5 had a very polished multiplayer but launched with a huge lack of content. -Yoink!- step up your game 343. Had halo 5 launched with the same amount of conent that it has now, halo 5 would be a LOT more popular than it is now.

I can agree there. I go back and play H2A quite often now. It’s such a shame that we didn’t get just a stand alone H2A instead of that debacle of a game MCC.

Yes those maps on H2A were very well done. It’d have been nice if they’d have incorporated a bit more of that into 5.

No. That’s way too much to retcon. Hours upon hours of work just retconned? No.

I agree with your CS example OP. I’ve played it pretty heavily since CS 1.2 back in the day, and the game hasn’t changed THAT much honestly, and little to none ‘at it’s core’.

I don’t mind the new Halo games (4 & 5), but unarguably they are more generic and mainstream. I still try to get all the achievements (something I’ve done for a long time exclusive to Halo) and have a good time messing around with different modes. But for me, Halo doesn’t feel as unique and special as it once did b/c too many core mechanics have changed.

I will continue to support and play Halo unless it takes a huge, huge step back. It’s my favorite series of all time still as of right now.

I agree with this. As much as I love having all Halo games within MCC… I wish that it was H2A only. More focus on making the campaign a remade master piece and having all the H2 maps redo for H2A and awesome playlist options (instead of disgusting cross game playlists).
