I might be late to ask this but why the subtitle guardians? if there are these so called guardians then what are they guarding and why?
I always thought it was Humanity. They are inheriting the Mantle and becoming Guardians of sentient life and all that.
A reference to the Mantle, and this line: “We are Forerunners, Guardians of all that exists.”
I assume we’ll know when we play it.

That’s what I’m thinking too. So probably it could be Halo 5 Forerunners.

They guard the map boundaries and kill you if you think about putting one foot outside of the boundaries of the map and in Halo 5 they are your enemy so good luck with killing them XD
In all seriousness it could mean many things. Master Chief is a guardian against galactic genocide in a manner of speaking.
I think it has multiple meanings. Forerunners were once guardians of the galaxy through the mantle, humanity is destined to reclaim that status, Chief is a guardian of humanity and Cortana served as his own guardian. There doesn’t have to be just one reason.

I personally think the name guardians comes from the spartans that are now guarding the cities that belong to humans. Think of it like the military coming to your town to “protect” it in the middle east, but instead they call themselves peacekeepers.
Either about how the Forerunners are guardians of the galaxy (lol) or how humanity is stepping up to be the new guardians…

I think Spartans have been referred to as Guardians a few times in the more recent media, if I recall it was said at some point in Initiation. My guess is the Spartans are the Guardians, with particular focus on John-177 (a Spartan-II) and Agent Locke (a Spartan-IV).

its simple forerunners were the guardians of the galaxy then after they fired the halo rings they intended that humans become the guardians of the galaxy.
The ones that have been keeping us in the map and killing us in ways we never thought possible since 2001.
Maybe that odd placeholder will have an explanation in Halo 5:G.

I agree with you that they are not capable of undertaking the responsibilities of the Mantle at the current time. I do however disagree with them not deserving the Mantle. They were supposed to inherit it from the Precursors in the first place before the Forerunners stole it, violently I might add.

the forerunners were first meant to get it, the precursors weren’t satisfied with them so they rather chose the humans. the forerunners in fear of getting extinct and killed by the precursors went against them, so i would say its a act of self defense and at the same time their ego
