Why don't proficiency medals apply to all games?

So I’m trying to get every medal for Halo 5, and I’ve noticed some that I’ve DEFINITELY got before. Most notably, the needler kill…
I know for a fact that I’ve killed people with the needler before, so why don’t I have that medal? Which gametypes does it apply to, and why doesn’t it apply to all gametypes?

Specific weapon kill medals are warzone medals, you have to kill another player in a warzone game to earn it.

What medal are you referring to? The commendation? Both WZ and Arena kills count for the commendation. Your stats show 14 arena and 9 WZ needler kills. You need many more to obtain the commendation. You can track your progress in game or here on waypoint.

When playing you’ll see the medal icon for certain types of kills (Needler, Sniper, etc). That’s just letting you know it’s a special type of kill, but you won’t earn the medal till you reach a certain number of kills. You can find out how many kills are needed when browsing the Commendations menu in game.

You’re talking about the commendations, he’s talking about the medals themselves.

Break out a needler in WZ as mentioned here ^ and get a kill with it. That should give you the medal you’re looking for. I thought they were obtainable in Arena too, but maybe I just haven’t played Arena in too long so I don’t remember.

Yeah, weapon-specific medals can only be obtained in regular Warzone when facing against human players. Anything outside of that will not give you the credit.

So I just got the needler and the Saw. And I figured I’d get the sniper while I was at it… Got sniper headshot, but no sniper. Does it have to be a generic type of sniper kill then?

I JUST DID IT AGAIN!

Why won’t I get the sniper medal? It’s so dumb. I got like 3 headshots with it before I died and nothing.

You gotta bodyshot for the sniper medal. A sniper headshot is its own, unique medal. Be sure to aim down the scope as well because otherwise you’ll get a Snapshot, which is ANOTHER separate medal.
Basically; spawn a sniper, find some random dude, shoot him twice in the body, done.
