Just curious if anyone has a good answer on why this game struggles so bad performance wise considering it’s nothing special. I mean we basically have a little better than xbox 360 graphics and only a maximum of 24 players (explosions in Halo 3 are actually still far superior) and this game has so many issues like desync, melees and shots that don’t register, lag, etc. it blows my mind that games like BF4 could have way bigger maps, destructible environments, and better graphics on the xbox 360 yet this game struggles on the series x and isn’t even a superior game to Halo 3 which is over 15 years old. Like is 343 just that incompetent at making video games?
Can be a multitude of different things, one being al ot of work was contracted out, so by the time someone learns the code, they leave, and then there was covid and staff cutbacks, bringing back Jo Staton to try to sort the mess out, along with changes in direction and a lot of campaign being cut.
With graphics I think it should have been next gen only, or at the least one x upwards, but the fact that one s was supported could have had something to do with covid that the new consoles wouldn’t be available as much.
End of the day I try not to dwell on the issues, but focus on how the direction is going, which with the amount of maps in development, including btb maps with actual vehicle spawn locations, seasonality now becoming more consistent, along with other things going on like the new vehicle damage etc, it will get there, desync to me has improved, and then there is still Tatanka coming and things we don’t even know about
Lots of video games use pre-existing engines and have full dedicated teams.
For some reason, Microsoft contract out a load of work and they decided to build their own engine. Which is insane.
You can contract out work if you’re using an engine that’s widely available and used by many as there is a wealth of experience to draw upon. Not saying it is as good as having a team specifically for it, but it works well enough across the industry. By having a homegrown engine, it’s super resource heavy, can be filled with unexpected bugs, layer on top of that it’s harder to contract out as you will have subtleties within the system others aren’t familiar with. Then factor in the fact it’s unproven, untested, it is just not a wise move to not have a dedicated team working on it, who can continue to work on it and know every aspect of it inside out at all times.
The game is also made to run on the OG Xbox One, which is an ancient artifact at this point. I get why they do this, but newer games do suffer from having to be accessible on older gen consoles. I agree it is important to cast the net as wide as possible, but when the game runs so badly on Xbox One, it isn’t worth it. If the game would run immaculately then it’s a different story. Fortnite is so popular because every console and even mobile devices can run the game and do it together with little issue. If there are going to be serious performance issues then the game shouldn’t be tethered to old hardware as people can play the game, but they won’t. So it’s a total waste.
The engine does work though so I guess it’s moving in the right direction. A lot for them to unravel and fix though. Fixing one thing might break another, that’s another issue when stuff is outsourced or built at home.
I believe the author’s point is that other games with better graphics, bigger maps, and more action can run just fine on older consoles. So, why does Halo Infinite have performance issues on decent PCs and older consoles? For example, I play Destiny, which has a lot more going on than Halo Infinite, yet it runs smoothly on the Xbox One.
It’s true that the Xbox One is nearing the end of its lifespan and it’s time for an upgrade. However, when considering a new console, one cannot help but think about the state of the gaming industry and the unprofessional trend of releasing unfinished and broken games, only to promise to fix them at a later date.
What incentive is there to upgrade to a new machine?
The gaming industry has shown a lack of respect and disdain for its customers for too long. We need to make it clear to these companies that they must offer finished and polished products and stand by their promises in their marketing hype.
Lastly, can we stop blaming COVID-19 for everything? This game has been out for a long time now, and the lack of any real DLC is nothing for a company to be proud of. Halo Infinite has made the term “Hopium” relevant because that’s the only fuel the game has been running on.
Unless they get a handle on this pretty quickly they prob won’t need to worry about making a season 4. Series x and s players are not happy right now (I’m one of them ) the new season is running like absolute crap on most of our consoles and the stutter, lag, desync is the worst I’ve seen since I started playing last May. Things should be improving not getting worse. This is my favorite game but most days I have to quit after one or two matches because it’s playing so poorly. If the game is playing well I have no prob playing for a couple hours but man this is bad. Usually after the first couple minutes I can tell if I’m better off just turning the game off vs dealing with the nonsense. This game struggles not due to content, cosmetics, lack of fun, it’s at least 90% poor performance and basic game function that is driving people away and that’s sad for such a fun game. CSGO just had 1.4 million players playing at once on steam a new record and we cant get the game to run right with what maybe a few thousand on steam c’mon. I mean Fortnite has millions of players. WhY can we not run a game like any of these other companies that far exceeded this games scope. Very frustrating for those of us who want to play this game. I don’t feel like we’re whiners we just want to play the game how it was meant to be played. Not to mention getting banned from the game for being dropped which is happening to quite a few people right now. Bad deal. I hate to see this much negativity surrounding this game but that’s been the tone lately for a lot of people.
You pretty much hit the nail on the head with all the issues.
In regards to the XBO being supported, I’m happy they decided to go that route. I hope at some point they drop new content support for it though, because there’s no way an Infinite DLC in 7 years (not gonna happen, I know) will run on an XB1 lol.
Personally, I wish they would have done what they did with Flight Simulator, and made the XBO just stream it off a cloud server. If they just made cloud players (any console cloud streaming and any X-Cloud) match only against each other, no one would have really been at a disadvantage.
