I’m not sure if this is the area where we talk about the website, but if it is, I’d like to know/figure out why the Reply option never works properly.
I click Reply, type out what I want to say, submit it, but in the upper right corner it never displays who I’m replying to even though I clicked Reply on their post.
Since Day 1 it never worked properly and I’ve just quoted people instead of replying to them.
I want some insight into this too. It makes the site a lot more messy and it can be hard to follow a conversation. I also don’t like how when you quote someone sometimes that the quote is automatically removed by the system, regardless if you highlight it and select quote or not.
This happens when you quote the whole post and your reply is the next post immediately after the one you’re replying to - eg, had you quoted all of the OPs post, the system would have removed the quote afterwards; if you only quoted part of their post, as I have with yours, the system won’t remove it.
If your reply isn’t the next one after the one you’re quoting from, then quoting the whold post works - eg, I could quote the whole of @Freak_A_Fan’s post, or your original post and the system won’t remove it, but if If quote the whole of your reply to me, then the system will remove it from my reply.
It’s a deliberate design choice for clarity. If I quoted your whole reply to me, then a reader would see your post, then immediately below that would be a quote of your whole post within my reply. On the other hand, If I quoted all of one of the early posts, then both are in the same spot where you can see them.
As for this point in your original post:
I think, but I may be wrong, if I replied to the original post, or my reply is immediately after the one I’m replying to (eg this reply here to your last post), it doesn’t show who you’re replying to. If you reply to other posts in a thread, and aren’t the next post after (eg this post was a reply to the second post in this thread) then it’ll show who you’re replying to.
I normally play it safe and use the quote function, even if I have to do a partial quote.
The ‘whole quote’ funcationality seems logical to me. If the original post you’re quoting from is directly before your reply, there’s not need to see the whole thing again within your reply. If there’s at least one other post between the post you’re quoting and your reply, then whole quote works as readers don’t have to scroll up to see the original.
I do think any reply should explicitly indicate which post your’re replying to.
