After Halo 1 he wasn’t really MIA, he was on his way back home to earth from the destroyed Halo.
After Halo 2 he was on board the covenant controlled forruner ship trying to assasinate the prophet of truth.
…alright, alright, he wasn’t MIA in those two games exactly.
After Halo 3, Chief is MIA lost in space, and presumed KIA.
After Halo 4, Chief is MIA again.
It’s an interesting trope, does the Chief like his alone time or somthing?
I don’t think Chief is MIA after the events of Halo 4, rather what he’s up to is highly classified and so no one knows exactly what he’s up to or where he is/ where he’s been.
Halo 3 is the only game where Chief has truly gone MIA at the end of the game, and even then he was assumed KIA as he didn’t make it back through the portal.

Considering that ONI agents need to ask Elites how to find Chief, and the higher ups of the Spartan branch don’t have a clue… I don’t think Chief is on some classified mission.
Well halo 4 ends with him being in UNSC custody…
> Well halo 4 ends with him being in UNSC custody…
Exactly. Halo 5 is him going out to be alone, on purpose, for the first time. End of 3 was only time truly MIA.
I’d argue the Chief was MIA after Halo 1. Yes, we know he got back to Earth because of Halo 2, but during the events of First Strike no one besides the small group he was with knew where he was and probably thought he’d died.
Actually, I’d ask the question as to why Chief has some sort of crash landing in every game.
Halo CE: Pillar of Autumn/lifeboats
Halo 2: The pelicans crashing in New Mombasa/In Amber Clad crashing into High Charity
Halo 3: He jumps out of the Forerunner Dreadnought and almost dies.
Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn crashes into Requiem.
If there isn’t a crash landing of some sort in Halo 5: Guardians, I’d actually be disappointed.
