The assault rifle in Halo Reach is the weakest weapon in the game. Why is it even still in the multiplayer? This weapon has a lot of draw backs: short range, weak (takes nearly the entire magazine to kill a player), very slow kill time because of low damage, and gets dominated by any other weapon. I know that you are suppose to burst fire for longer range to make it more effective and possibly use less bullets but when it comes to multiplayer, who has the patience to do that? Also the kill time is really slow already at full auto so you won’t even be able to kill other players very much since they can simply run away. Halo 3’s assault rifle was weak but it’s not as weak as Reach’s, this weapon sucks. Besides, everyone who starts with this gun almost always switches it for a power weapon. Even the magnum you spawn with is better at killing. And everyone knows this. There’s no point in removing it since Halo Reach is a pretty old game (3 and a half years since release) and 343 doesn’t pay attention to this game. So that’s my rant about the assault rifle in Reach.
Ok… I think I got this…
You state that “The assault rifle in Halo Reach is the weakest weapon in the game” wich I disagree. The plasma pistol is. But consider using a combo with them. Over charged plasma pistol, THEN a burst of AR. That works…most of the times. Like another so called “NoobCombo” like the Frag-Granade/AR burst.
They call it NoobCombo for a reason…
You have to be a real noob to get killed like that!
And if you GET killed by one…You deserved it…Ah haaa!

I thought it was a Noob combo because only Noobs’ use it.
Bungie really dropped the ball with “Halo: Reach” multiplayer and the AR is no exception. I use it when I use up all the ammo for the DMR and I need to scrounge for more. Mostly I don’t play “Reach” multiplayer because I just don’t like it very much.
> The assault rifle in Halo Reach is the weakest weapon in the game.
What about the puny Brute ‘Spiker’ ?
Don’t think I’ve ever found the Spiker any use, at least with the Assault Rifle I can get a handful of kills.
I think the Spiker may have had a more powerful melee in Halo 3 but, but in Reach it just sucks.
QUOTE:

Well…it is.
That was me, beeing ironic, in a failed attempt to justified both my (few) kills with the AR and my deaths from noob-combos, just like the ones I described.
And dont start with the Spiker…that thing its a fail, even as a paper-weight.
Because it’s an automatic weapon? Precision weapons are always better to use, for example if you had the choice between a DMR or AR which would you choose? Burst out all of your AR, or 5 shots of the DMR?
Both the plasma pistol and the spiker are extremely effective against shields, they are quite useful. The AR is a piece of -Yoink- in Reach, but still better than the plasma repeater which is actually the weakest weapon in the game.

Me. I’m capable of sniping people with the weapon.
You should look into other ways to play the game. Get 7 more people and play a normal Slayer match, except change the weapon damage modifier to 123% and see how people use other weapons.
Also look into Loadouts, alter them so that the Sprint AA has the AR with 2/4 grenades while all other AA Loadouts have 1 grenade and use something like the Plasa Repeater.

The Spiker is my best K/D ratio weapon, with 128 kills and 0 deaths.

Noooo… seriously ? Am I holding it wrong ?
Any tips ?..

Pfft, I don’t know. It has low spread and no bloom, so you can use it from a distance without needing to pace your shots. It breaks shields fast, which may cause people to freak out and try to escape or make desperate attacks. You also have to give up the idea that you can kill him before someone shoots him in the head and maybe settle for assist sprees.
Assult rifles are not OP or bad they medium but they are fine to me.

Its a Halo tradition. And you don’t mess with traditions.

Why not?

The Assault Rifle is awesome!!! But you’re right, it sucks misrerably in Reach. Ice cream
So I just had a good match in which the Spiker was my ToD with 8 kills. Uploaded it into my File Browser for anybody interested.
I can’t speak about this, but it isn’t the weakest by any means.

- Nice work Mr Kaiser; I watched it and was impressed. Also with your effective use of the plasma pistol (without over charge). Always ends in disaster for me when I try.
Bungie balanced the weapons better than I thought !

I would have to respectfully disagree with you. I used to think the same as you, but recent experiences in MM have changed my mind. I will usually drop my AR in favor of the plasma repeater, and I do indeed successfully kill plenty of people with it. Because it’s plasma based, it absolutely wrecks shields. It’s much weaker against armor, however. This is generally the rule in Halo: energy-based weapons work better against shields, projectile/bullet weapons for armor. Think about it- the plasma weapons in the game all destroy shields but suck against armor, and none are even headshot capable. They had to make a rifle that shoots needles to go along with this and give the covenant a headshot capable weapon.
The fact that the plasma repeater isn’t great for armor doesn’t matter, because if I’m at the range that I’m going to be using g it or the AR, I’m probably going to be close enough to punch him in the space of the next second and a half. And I would want his shields to come down before mines in that situation.
Thus, plasma repeater
Edit: and as for it being weaker overall, I’ve never actually timed it but I’m pretty sure it will win in a straight DPS based slugfest with an AR. The fact that it completely knocks the shield to pieces in a split second makes up for its slow armor kill time. The AR is more balanced for both types of HP, which is why it is okay at everything, good at nothing, and slow to kill anything.
