Why Does Master Chief Look So Old?

In the end when you complete it on Legendary and you see part of his face he looks so damm old . I was not expecting this at all . I knew MC was on the wrong side of 40 but he looks like he has aged more then Solid Snake in MGS4. Is it his augmentations that have done this ?

Prob’ a combination of the augmentation and the fact he has been in a couple, or should that be a ton of, fights, crashes, explosions etc. He is bound to look a little bit banged up.

He just got done saving the human race again and He also just lost his best friend. So I imagined hes pretty fatigued mentally and physically. Which like any other humans, can have a toll on the eyes as one of the first places.

Well, he went through augmentations done to him to become a Spartan which accelerated his aging process. His actual age didn’t accelerate, but his appearance did. If you notice in Halo: Fall of Reach, it describes John as having the body of a full grown man in his teens after the augmentations.

Plus, Master Chief is like in his 50s right now. He’s seen a lot of battle. He’s dedicated his entire life to fighting the war. So, with the augmentations, plus him being in his 50s, and having seen lots of battle and has gone through a lot of trauma, as well as staying in his armor for long periods of time, you can expect him to look quite old.

However, in regards to the fact that hes in his late 40’s early 50’s (I believe about 46 or 47 actually) he should actually look still about 30ish id say.

Why? Take a look at Sergeant Johnson, a Spartan I…in halo 3 he was in his 80’s/90’s and looked about 60. And hes a much more angry person compared to john haha

But as someone else said earlier, I do feel hes just really worn out overall. Give him a cumfy bed and a cup of coffee and he should look a little more sturdy!

Well, He’s been fighting for years, saving humanity, losing friends and loads of other stuff. Don’t forget he’s been in that armour for goodness how long as well. His skin hasn’t seen the light of day for years!

I knew the Chief was and old dog of war approaching or in his 50’s. I might have learned it from Halsey’s journal.

But I had no idea Johnson was that old. Can someone source this? I’d love to learn more.

Back to Chief: the spartan augmentation process followed by all the action he’s seen in his lifetime (safe to assume he’s seen more than anyone. ever. of all time) and you can bet he’s earned his wrinkles and scars.

Johnson if anything is ATLEAST 70, I swear haha either that or im dreaming things :stuck_out_tongue:

In regards to chief again…I think im one of the few who wouldnt mind seeing John and actually feel it would add to the “machine becoming human” aspect that his character sorely needs and was portrayed beautifully in H4

The spartan augmentations don’t cover crows feet lol.

And yeah you’re right PA1N7 1T BLACK, Johnson was at least 68 when he died.

I also don’t like master chiefs attitude in halo 4

He acts so caring, he talks WAY TOO MUCH and hes like a grandfather and cortana is his granddaughter

> Don’t forget he’s been in that armour for goodness how long as well. His skin hasn’t seen the light of day for years!

Exactly.

Recall what skin looks like when it’s taken out of a cast. Usually a typical broken bone will require a month or so of being in a cast to heal properly, so compare that short period of time of skin being out of the sunlight and encapsulated to years and years and… wait I think I can figure some of it out. There were opportunities and likely seized opportunities prior to either Aug. 29th or 30th of 2552 when John got an armor upgrade the MJOLNIR Mark V and the battle of Reach began. After that point he’s been a very busy man in which we’ve played a large part of his historic story. Although, John also was able to get out of his armor temporarily on the day of or maybe the day before Oct. 20th 2552 when he was given the recently approved MJOLNIR Mark VI armor system, but he was quickly back at it because the Covenant had found Earth. The next time he takes off his armor is at the conclusion of Halo 4.

The context of events after John/Cortana defeat the Ur-Didact: John had been drifting in space amongst debris of the Didact’s ship for a time after Cortana’s farewell before being recovered by a UNSC search-and-rescue team. In the aftermath of the Ur-Didact’s defeat, a UNSC team investigates the city of New Phoenix, where the Composer’s energy beam was directed; although the infrastructure of vehicles and buildings are completely untouched, its former human inhabitants are gone. Back aboard the Infinity, John rejoins Palmer and the other Spartans, preparing for their inevitable next battle, and his customized/reconfigured MJOLNIR Mark VI armor is removed for the first time in years.

How long exactly is unclear to me at this point in time, but it’s at least 4 years later and that’s likely a hell of a lot longer than any skin we’ve ever seen encapsulated and unexposed to sunlight. Hell, John’s entire body must smell worse than Big Foot’s d*ck despite the atmosphere conditioning and moisture regulating the suit provides considering how much skin we shed on a daily basis, so in my opinion it’s no wonder he looks sort of like crap with what little we do see. Nevertheless, I’m sure the MJOLNIR armor is advanced enough and sophisticated enough to prevent many of the issues we’d see to our skin if it was encapsulated in a cast for even a smidge of the time he was stuck in his suit.

Not-to-mention, the stress levels that John has had to deal with probably has caused him to look a bit aged as well as the fact that the MJOLNIR suit which has somehow kept him alive and nourished by providing regenerative food materials despite the physical and mental attrition that he has had to go through must have had an effect on his body. I mean you are what you eat, right? And without ever seeming to actually eat real foods or drink anything in order to fuel his body who knows what that regenerative food substance could potentially be doing to his appearance.

Lastly, (thanks to omarlotrc for the reminder) there is the fact that… the Librarian evolved him within Halo 4’s story, so who knows what that might have done to his physical appearance.John’s at least 46 years old, but by the point where we see him taking off his armor it’s more likely to be 47; hell maybe even 48.

When Sgt. Johnson died he was somewhere in his late 50s or early to mid 60s. It’s not perfectly clear because there isn’t concrete info or any confirmation on his exact birthday. Only speculations of a general time period within the very late 2400s which also lead to him being in his late 20s, but possibly more likely in his early-mid 30s come his time on Harvest.

The last thing to remember is that with respect to all the cryo-frozen space travel these guys have done there’s a good chance that regardless to their actual date ages that they’re bodies are quite a bit younger.

Decades of excruciating training, wounds, battles, surgical procedures and being thrown in/out of cryogenic stasis can’t be kind on one’s body. I was honestly shocked that the Chief looked as youthful and unscathed as he did in that split second clip.

Paint it Black, I’m pretty sure you just took me to school in a BTB game earlier today

Re: the Face of Chief, I would have been happy to keep him faceless, his reflection an “everyman” of any gamer out there. I gave up on that dream as soon as they gave him the name “John”, though.

Makes me wonder if they’ll ever do a full reveal, and if so, what story line will make it come to pass.

He was evolved into a new form by the Librarian.Of course he’s gonna look different.

He’s been like this since 2001 with the release of Fall of Reach, I much prefer Halo 4 Chief to CE/2/3 Chief combined, he actually has a personality now

If you actually look at people that are career military people in the world they all look older than their age because of all the stress. So I would guess stress is his ager.

Agreed, I always wanted to hear john talk and not just play a super soldier in a suit just accepting every order given to him. When I play a game I want some personalty coming from a character. they did halo 4 chief very well.

OT: I would say he’s in his late 40’s early 50’s. The amputations plus the years of fighting really takes a toll on someone even a super soldier. The cryo sleeps delays his aging process depending on how long he’s in there.

I didn’t get that feel from him at all. He just showed his humanity is all.

People are living to 80 today. 500 years into the future, people should be living a helluva lot longer. John’s physical appearance is probably down to stress, even though stress does little to impede a Spartans ability to fight, its effects on the body’s appearance would be visible.

If it weren’t for her, he’d set off the rings and be dead.

If it weren’t for her, a bomb would have blown up in front of his face.

If it weren’t for her, he’d died by the Didact.

and a lot of things that would have killed him have all been prevented by Cortana. He better give a crap about her after saving his butt more times than any marine would.

On topic: His in his late 40s-early 50s at this point in time. Plus, add all the stress large scale combat can do to a human body, no matter how augmented one can be, and you can look old.

A good example is a picture of President Abraham Lincoln. He looked quite young when he got elected. However, with his first term being dealt with the Civil War, all the stress quickly made him look real old by the time he got re-elected.
