I have never understood why so many Halo players regard Halo 3:ODST as the worst Halo. Many people also don’t like Reach, and I feel like a constant in both of these is not being able to be Master Chief (which is why I like Reach the best and ODST the third best). But I didn’t come here to talk about Reach even though I could go on, on how awesome of a game that is. I came to talk about the fantastically atmospheric game of ODST. Halo 3:ODST is a strong number 3 on my Halo ranking list. The game had such a fun but simple campaign of just walking through the city after nightfall piecing together the puzzle of their squad. The idea to find an object of interest and all of a sudden be in another squad mates shoes was a very interesting idea to me. Also, for the fist time you are finally not Master Chief (not hate towards him but I just got bored with him) and you are not even another spartan. For the first time in Halo the game has the power to make you feel vulnerable since you are not a super soldier with shields but a more trained soldier with stamina. Additionally, there was a phenomenal soundtrack to this game. The music truly made you feel alone and it spawns that urge to explore and find your lost team. Speaking of exploring, you get to find auidologs throughout the city that explains what condition the city was in after the covenant carrier went into slip space. A bonus to that is if you find all 30 in the city you get to access a secret spot in the tunnels where you find out the cop you were helping was really an evil guy. I had enormous fun playing this game, I just wish others did too.
I like ODST too. And I hope the make an ODST two.
Foe me, ODST by far and away had the best mood. The soundtrack stood above the other Halos, and the gunplay was great. The Automag changed tactics for good. Firefight was more hardcore but it was stale quickly. I wouldn’t say the campaign was an amazing story, but VISR Mode and the other additions were great. The soundtrack is what made it for me though. The section on top of the NMPDHQ where you had to fight off the banshees etc with a missile pod was epic.
Most people expected more than was reasonable out of it.
I love halo odst, great game
I think a primary reason for the dislike of ODST was the short campaign with a full price tag. It did come with all of Halo 3’s multiplayer though too. I was a big fan of the game. Definitely the most unique.
-Yoink- odst and reach
A lot of people expected more out of it.
I think the main reason people dislike ODST is that it feels more like an expansion than a full game (and it did begin development as an expansion). It just doesn’t have as much meat to it as the other entries in the franchise.
ODST was nice. Strange thing was that the ODST’s seemed to be able to take more punishment than the masterchief. ODST’s health and stamina were too high. Also the idea of “Stamina” was strange to me. I thought it was just going to be health and nothing more. First play through I was so careful. Then I saw that my health wasn’t going down after being hit. Took me a while to find out the “Stamina” mechanic. Hint it is just shields with a different looking and sounding effect. Also it was strange that the terminals had no way of being Re activated. Like you couldn’t get them to spit out quarters and make noise again. After getting all the terminals the city just feels/sounds so dead. When the terminal notifications are on the city feels more alive and more like a place that was just evacuated a day ago. I actually have a profile where I have not accessed any terminals in order to play the game with the liveliness of the city intact.
ODST was really good. Stuff like exploring the city at night, the music, the audio logs and the characters are awesome. But i do think they (343i) should revisit the concept and change a few things (making the city more dense and add in more stealth stuff), and hopefully it comes out as an expansion to Halo 5.
It was sold at full price when in reality it was, at most, an expansion to Halo 3: it used the exact same game engine as 3, had nothing new besides firefight and a short campaign.
I’m sure, if it was sold at $30 or so, people would have far less of a problem with it, because it being sold at $60 was ridiculous, and people called it a blatant cash-grab, which is completely accurate.
I, however, did enjoy the game - it had a compelling, noir mood to it, and it excelled in doing so. The campaign, besides being short, was compact, and managed to just not become stale near the end, thanks to the inclusion of the Vergil and the introduction of the whole Engineer shtick. Firefight was also a very fun horde mode.
It had the best cast, best (relatable) story, interesting elements (wish the AI had been done more in depth). It broke away from classic Halo, not to change the series, but just to have a look. All this made it new and fresh.
This is why it is my favourite campaign. It felt like Halo CE in many ways, and I miss being in a squad I care about.
The fact that it did not have PvP, you played as an ODST instead of a Spartan (of course), the fact that the Silenced SMG is so weak that they might as well should have just scrapped the idea and put the BR in the game, Firefight was not customizable, etc. Anyway, the game is still better than anything after it.
In my opinion firefight in ODST was way better than in Reach. I stil get together with a few friends a give legendary firefight a go. Great fun.
I love ODST and still play it from time to time. But saying that you are weaker is ridiculous
since you actually have more health in ODST.
Somehow ODST’s are stronger than the Master Chief
But all in all the game is great and it is one of the best campaign
I loved the story and atmosphere of ODST. It was a nice change, and still had that awesome Halo 3 engine, too. It really made you try extra harder, because you weren’t some super soldier; you where just a regular person. The enemies where much taller, hit you harder, and gave you a real aspect of what it would be like in the eyes of one of your friendlies as the Chief.

I thoroughly enjoyed the silenced SMG. That is one of the main reasons I bought the game. I loved not being Master Chief for once. I didn’t care about the PvP matches that much. Firefight was brand new so they are not going to multiple options to change it, just like forge in Halo 3. Also I have to disagree with you on your last statement. I found Reach to be incredible.

Then let me be more specific and say that the game made you initially feel weaker the first few times you played.
WHAT?! ODST GETS HATE?!
RAGE MODE ACTIVATED
