Why does half of the communitiy hate Palmer?

I just replayed Halo 4 again and I was wondering why people hate Palmer soo much. I’ve heard that it’s because of that line she said in Halo 4 where she meets Chief and says “thought you be taller.” I mean, she is just teasing the chief and it’s also the fact that he is no longer that special anymore because of how there are so many spartans now (I got that from LateNightGaming’s video about Palmer. You should watch it he makes good statements about her character → "I thought you would be taller" A Halo 4 critique | Why Sarah Palmer is not THAT bad - YouTube). I’ve also heard that the reason why people hate her is because she tried to kill Halsey. Halsey did bad stuff in the past but is not hated for that. I don’t hate Halsey and I think she is still a good person but Palmer hates her tho because of what halsey did to make the spartan IIs (like kidnapping n stuff) and I understand that. Palmer respects the Cheif and she didn’t follow Del Rio’s orders to arrest chief. For me, I dislike Del Rio the most in halo 4 because how he is actually against the cheif. This is my opinion. I know she doesn’t have so much good character in halo 5 because of the writers and I think her character can be better. You can tell me other reasons why Palmer is hated in this community. I personally think she isn’t worthy of hatred.

Sgt. Johnson will always be a billion times better than that dumb -yoink- of a character.

HURR DURR EGGHEADS
HURR DURR I HAFTA KILL HALSEY
HURR DURR I NEVER WEAR MY HELMET EVEN IN ACTIVE COMBAT ZONES

One of the most insanely arrogant, least intelligent, smart mouthed without being funny, and unprofessional characters who have ever had the misfortune of being created. You have to read Halo: Escalation and play Spartan Ops for most of her cringe moments; she’s pretty much absent in most of Halo 4.

343 overdoing the strong female archatype. She’s annoying and doesn’t do anything but boss you around in warzone, that’s it.

I think we need to put a Havok Nuke in her office, it’s the only way to be sure that she’s gone for good.

I like her. She reminds me of Kira from Star Trek.

Gonna put it out there: it’s at least in part because she’s a woman.

That’s not a fact. That’s LNG’s opinion. Even in a world with Spartan IVs, the Spartan IIs are still special. If not for their enhancements, then for their history and their accomplishments. And Chief is the most special of the Spartan IIs, as he ended the war, saved humanity and the rest of the galaxy.

I completely agree with you, I personally like her character. That being said, I really don’t get why she’s not liked that much, and the weird posts that replied to yours don’t seem to give a reasonable answer, so we can just be satisfied with that, and simply respect people’s interests.

Okay so maybe that tease was a little uncalled for, but Palmer does respect Chief. One of my favorite lines from Halo 5 is when Halsey ask Lasky: “You let him go?” and Palmer says: “Nobody lets the Chief do anything, the Chief does what he wants.”

I don’t doubt she respects the Chief. I imagine she admires him as much as anyone. She just doesn’t express admiration openly, and prefers to be sarcastic and cynical. Nothing wrong with that. I just don’t like it when people tote Youtuber opinions as fact simply because they have a large platform.

She seems bland and smug with undeserved spotlight in the games. Maybe that’s the reason?
I don’t know much about her background though so it might also lie in there.
In Halo Evolutions Palmer has an appearance, which in context gives the “I thought you were taller” line a quite different, more positively playful meaning.
It’s worth checking out, and I can recommend the audiobooks.

I thought you’d be taller is a randomize marines say to chief in halo 1

Not the same Palmer in Evolutions.

Actually what those marines say is “He’s taller than I thought. Better looking, too”.

No.

Anyway, my reason is because she’s trying to act too cool ALL THE TIME. Johnson didn’t have to act cool and drop one liners all the time, it came naturally for him. Miranda was cool because she was strong and a great commander (plus that Johnson rescue scene on the Ark). Cortana is cool because she was smart and because she actually did helpful things.

Palmer does neither. She stands around barking orders most of the time, chilling with Lasky (who as the ship’s CO, she is really getting too personal with) and dropping sarcastic remarks. THAT’s why I don’t like her. I actually did think the “taller” line was funny. My issue with that whole scene was because the Master Chief, who had been missing for four whole years and had almost single handedly ended the largest and longest war in human history, had just reappeared and everyone seems to blow it off.

No need to take it personally. I’m not saying the reason YOU don’t like her is because she’s a woman, I’m saying the reason she is generally disliked will at least in part be down to fact that she’s rocking that XX.

Sorry, actually I thought you were saying YOU didn’t like her because she was a woman. Lol. We’re on the same page then. But even then, that’s not the majority IMO.

I don’t understand why people find it hard to see whether or not there’s an agenda in place. There are movies, games and shows where the lead can be a woman, and it doesn’t affect the plot or reception whatsoever. But that’s not always the case, and sometimes (especially of recent times), you can easily tell that the crux of why the protagonist is female is unnatural from a writer’s standpoint.

Sarah Palmer, in honesty, doesn’t seem to fill that agenda. If that were the case, then the 343 would blatantly try to show and tell how she’s the one doing all the heavy lifting (possibly even literally at that) for the cast, and that John has to rely on her to make all decisions - he does not.

I think the problem with Palmer is that she is written in an overly antagonistic/hostile way yet 343i also expects the audience to like her. She’s clearly supposed to be new Halo’s equivalent of Johnson, given her ‘badass’ and ‘give no -Yoink-’ attitude.

This, too. Her trivial treatment of the Master Chief probably ticked a lot of people off.

They actually say the opposite; that he’s taller than they expected.

Ever consider the context of the situation didn’t allow for a traditional “welcome home” party? Chief and Lasky and Palmer were all on the clock when they convened. Lasky and his group had been hiding from Prometheans, and Chief had just gotten done smashing through some. What did you expect, hugs and a parade? Almost as soon as they’ve greeted, they get radio chatter and have to get back to work. There was no time for extended pleasantries.
And Palmer’s comment, while light teasing at worst, fits the overall theme of Halo 4, which was to humanize the Chief. In walks this guy who is lauded as the hero of mankind, who has stories of him single handedly taking out scores of enemies again and again, this larger-than-life figure. Palmer’s not ignorant of that. But she sees that behind all the legend, he’s still a man. And she pokes at that. She pokes at everyone, except maybe high command. It would have been out of character for her to gush over Chief like a fan girl, and it would have been disrespectful if she just ignored him. And if she had been like “I’m Spartan Palmer, good to meet you, sir!”, it would have been lacking personality.

Honestly, I’m surprised that so many people took offense to Palmer’s remark. On it’s own, it was harmless, so of course people are going to wonder if the hate towards her stems from somewhere else.
