Here are a few reasons why I was insanely disappointed by Halo 2’s campaign and direly hope 343 only looks at Halo 2 for multiplayer (Halo 2’s MP was fantastic though).
Linear, labyrinthine gameplay
What happened to the huge battlefields of Halo CE? The largest play space in the game was in Quarantine Zone, and that doesn’t even begin to compare with the vast landscapes of AOTCR, Two Betrayals, and the level “Halo”.
Garbage feeling weapons
Halo CE’s weapon sandbox was pretty much perfect. Each weapon had it’s own purpose, and felt completely different to other weapons. There were no redundant weapons, and the plasma weapons had this really cool feel to them (Which was in part due to the look of the CE shield indicators ). Halo 2? The only weapon I really enjoyed using was the Battle Rifle. Every other weapon felt bland and unenjoyable to me.
Humanizing the aliens, destroying the Halo CE feel
You want to know what Halo CE reminded me of? The fantastic movie “Aliens”. The entrance of the creepy Flood which we knew nothing about, the menacing elites, and the alien environments. What did Halo 2 do? It decided to give the Covenant personalities, and make the Flood fracking poetic. I don’t mind giving the Covenant intelligence, but at least make them retain their native growls in combat. And the Flood is supposed to be this mysterious, virulent life form that the player encounters in deep space. The Gravemind speaking english pretty much ended that for me.
While Halo 2 is a teriffic game multiplayer wise, I just can’t call it a Halo campaign. In fact, because of this game I can’t call Halo 3 a Halo campaign either. IMO Halo never got a true sequel. But the day it does… that’ll be the day…

The only thing i liked about halo 2’s campaign was the flood. It sounded, looked, and acted cool. It didnt just sit back like the other AIs, it actualy charged you and made you think on your feet rather than snipe across the map.

So did the Flood in Combat Evolved. But CE’s Flood didn’t have some stupid poetic intelligence that destroyed the feel of the game.

i have to disagree with you on this one. halo 2 had a realy good campaign especially scince we got an insight to the covinent. i will also have to disagree with the flood as the reason that the grave mind can speak English is due to the fact that it has gathered information on the human race including language so if it wanted to sit and have a chit with you about eating your face of it could.
i will agree on the size of battlefield though as halo 2 did seem to lack that compared the halo CE.
overall i hope they focus halo 4 on some aspects of halo 2 like the multilayer and the br ( if there is no br in halo 4 i will not be happy ).

The multiplayer for Halo 2 was phenomenal. I hope 343 takes inspiration from it. But not from the campaign.

Even if it was pure war why would they have humanized the aliens? I’m sure they could have given insight into their society without destroying their menacing feel.
Didn’t Bungie themselves say Halo 2 was a “disastrous flaming turd of failure”, had to cut the last third of the game’s story, and put it together with just enough bugs that it was shippable?
I always find it odd when people say Halo 2 was their favorite campaign when to me it seemed so obviously lacking. Maybe it’s just me.

Maybe because by the end of it they were our allies, and because we played as the arbiter (It wouldnt be fun playing as them not knowing what in the world they are saying)
If this wasnt the reason why, then they were just … not thinking

I thought that too. It really isn’t that good. I wish they could’ve had more time to finish…
the real question is why anybody wants a NEW trilogy by a NEW developer to make a game that play the same as the OLD trilogy made by a DIFFERENT developer…

Because they were not the main threat. They were only another civilization drawn to war like any other civilization. The main threat is the Primordial and the Flood.
Seriously, it’s almost if you don’t like Halo 2’s campaign and ways of setting things up, then you don’t like Halo. Halo 2 created the Halo universe, not CE.
You’re also overusing the word “destroyed;” Halo 2 destroyed nothing.

The main threat is the Flood? Then why’d they give them an intelligence? Why did they take every last bit of alien feeling from them and replace it with some limited Shakespearean feel?
If Halo 2 created the Halo universe, there wouldn’t be a “2” in the name. Halo CE set up the series. It was the beginning and the sequels should have played by IT’S rules and shouldn’t have completely thrown it out the window. Halo 2 destroyed alot. Read the original post and point out to me where you feel the word “destroyed” is inapproporiate (And don’t replace it with some stupid little synonym that downplays the damages done by the sequel to the series).

Hslo is actually about the flood.
Halo CE was the game that made FPS happen on consoles. It was halo 2 that put it on top.
