im wondering because in the legandary ending in halo 5 the ring looks like it is active and cortana laughs. Why?

She doesn’t so much activate it, as she commandeers it. My guess is that it’s just one more tool for her to complete her goal. Use the Guardians as a first measure and if that doesn’t work, blast 'em with a Halo.

Your question should read “why hasn’t she already activated the rings?”. Cortana has the index, control and only needs a few minutes to do it.
Didnt she use the index at the end of halo 3?

She did not activate the ring, i think she just takes control of it. tbh she getting to be so ridiculous lol

Pretty sure she dosen’t as Guilty spark said in Halo 3 Save his head dispose of the rest. And could activate the ring himself thats why you shutdown the pulse generators.

Maybe she just moves it to another location? Humanity and the Sangheili already know the location of more than a half of them. If Cortana wants to use them she surely tries to prevent the Chief from blowing them up.

Cortana can’t activate a Halo on her own, it has to be a human who does it. And in any case, even having the Index of Alpha Halo doesn’t mean anything as it can’t be used anywhere but Alpha Halo. That’s why each Ring has its own Index, to prevent someone from nicking the Index from one place and then being able to fire whatever Halo they wanted to.
why would she not need it
Cortana does not have Installation 04’s Index anymore. She had to use it to active Installion 04B. The Index had to be insderted with the Core. If it was removed during the firing process it would have stopped. The ring fired meaning the Index in the Core and destroyed with that Halo. Cortana didn’t bring it with them to Requiem.
