Chief’s armor is noticeably changed to his newer armor in scenarios that occurred in the past in several of 343’s displays of past events. Even Blue team shows a change of armor.
The most recent example (even containing Blue team) is Fall of Reach: The Terminal.

Why though? The older amor was incredibly simple in design. Showing a past event would be easier to do with the old armor than the new and complicated armor.
(If it was something animated in 3D I’d understand because it would require making a whole new model, but most of these cases are 2D drawn).
Because a few dozen Spartans who look completely identical is fine in a novel, but doesn’t translate well to any sort of visual medium. The oldest novels, really the only place this appeared, have effectively had the idea that all S-IIs wore identical, unmodified armour retconned, and I personally think it’s a good thing.
Worth noting however is that Red Team from Halo Wars still rocks baseline Mark IV.
Cause its easier to use the most recent armour asset that was already created than just remaking the classic armour and putting it in.
For example in the Halo 2 Anniversary Cutscenes made by blur, where you see arbiter and locke talking to each other, locke is holding the Halo 2 BR, not the new one - Halo 5 version. Thus reusing assets.

While it is reusing assets, it’s not like they went and melted down all the slightly older BR55s or anything. I actually love seeing weapons from various games in content not related to where they’re from, it makes the universe feel more connected.
