Why do you prefer AR starts?

Personally, I really like DMR starts, as do most of the people I play with, but AR starts gets voted in fairly often. I’m curious as to why so many people seem to prefer AR starts?

  • I prefer DMR starts, just because then I can defend myself at range with it, and then for close range I have the AR secondary. On maps like Sanctuary or Pinnacle, I find if the other team has a good sniper, then we’re screwed, because the Pistol isn’t effective past mid range. -

Because they can’t aim lol.

I personally like AR starts and you have to pickup and find DMRs. When everyone has DMRs, half the players stay back at the map and just take pot shots at people rather than much else. That’s just what I find.

I’m wondering if you ever feel handicapped if the other team has DMRs from the map and you don’t? I know for me, I do.

For pistol secondary.

I’d never thought of that. You prefer the pistol to the DMR?

Probably because then everyone won’t have a distanced weapon. DMR goes pretty far and the pistol does too but its accuracy is pretty bad in comparison.

^^For me, if the pistol is Anniversary, then yeah. It wrecks the DMR from close to medium range.
But if the settings are TU or default, I’ll vote DMR’s. If AR’s comes out on top, I just look for a DMR or NR to use.

The DMR is overpowered as a starting weapon. It makes half the guns in the game obsolete. When players spawn with a DMR there is often little incentive to picking up auxiliary weapons. When everyone in a game is using the DMR, gameplay gets boring a repetitive.

Yep. There are always plenty of DMR/the covenant equivalent on the maps to grab whenever I want one. But there are not many pistol spawns on maps.

AR starts add more variety to gameplay. Due to the fact the DMR is so over-powered why do I have reason to pick up anything at all? With AR starts you are always looking for that definite advantage over your enemy. That is what makes it more fun than DMR starts.

Also, having DMR starts makes it more difficult to run around with weapons like the plasma pistol/rifle/repeater.

What about on maps like Sanctuary or Pinnacle where there are long sight lines and snipers - do you still prefer AR/Pistol starts on them?

Because most people still switch their pistol for power weapons on AR starts. I can usually find a DMR pretty quickly, and it gives me a HUGE advantage over all the AR users.

It’s funny because Asylum only has 2 DMRs and Needle Rifles each. That map is so painful to play AR starts on.

Oh my God don’t even get me started on Asylum.

I thought it had 4 DMRs? One in each base and another by the pillar under the streets on each side.

EDIT: I kind of like AR starts when I want to use the NR (One of my favorite weapons) now that I know how to control it’s bloom to be both accurate and quick, but when I want a solid match I’ll pick DMR starts most of the time. I don’t play Super Slayer much at all (I would if the best players in the game weren’t a majority of it’s population), so I don’t know what I like in TU settings.

Ar starts work well on smaller maps or during games such as crazy king or oddball. It works great as a close to mid range weapon, while dmr starts don’t encourage weapon swapping or a change of tactics. If everyone starts with a dmr and you can get max ammo after a few kills in small team based gametypes such as team slayer dmr starts effectively eliminate the need to pick up other weapons, unless of course you want them. I find ar starts make the game more interesting as people have to engage in closer battles instead of picking people off from the other side of the map.

No I just mean I can’t take how terrible that map is. I’ve played it so much and know where everything is, but it’s still garbage.

Starting the game with AR’s is an excellent way for guests and noobs to provide support for their teams. Friends of mine who play with me usually pepper the opposing team with semi-automatic fire while I take’em out with a DMR, Needle rifle or Magnum. Heck, at the very least they can provide a noisy distraction for locating snipers lol.
