Why do we fight brutes in Halo ODST?

So you’re telling me that metropolis all the way up to gravemind happened in just 30 minutes? Why would the covenant drop all brutes? The brutes didn’t even have the armor they had in halo 3 at that point…

Because the Prophet of Truth got wise to the fact that Regret had attacked Earth, and sent his reinforcement fleet. This fleet was led by loyal Brutes that were outfitted in power armor and had the best weaponry. By the time the fleet got to Earth, Regret had already fled so Truth sent his Brutes into Mombasa with the order to kill any Elites that were still alive, as part of his plans for the Covenant over the next two weeks. Remember, it would be two weeks until In Amber Clad arrived at Delta Halo.

Basically, they were Truth’s forces and he had secretly had them equipped with power armor and advanced weaponry, and they inserted into Mombasa right after Regret fled.

I get it now, but why did it take 2 weeks for the Amber clad to get to delta halo?

I think it was just the sheer distance between the Sol System and the Coelest System (the one Delta Halo is in). Even Covenant ships would take some time to make that journey.

I get what you’re saying and all but the timing still doesn’t make sense…

After the slipspace rupture I’m sure there were still a good few Covenant forces that Regret left behind in the city including Elites, Grunts, Jackals, Buggers and Hunters. It’s suggested in ODST that Truth’s forces arrived at Earth, deployed drop ships, troops and vehicles AND killed all Elites and any forces loyal to the Elites instantaneously at the exact moment of the slipspace rupture over Mombasa shown by the forces that Buck fights immediately after his pod hits the ground. It’s also suggested that ONI knows exactly what’s going on regarding Brutes killing Elites AND ODST is suggesting that the MA5C assault rifle, that particular sniper rifle variant and the M90a shotgun had all become standard issue around the same time that Halo 2 and ODST took place which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

In my opinion Halo 3 ODST doesn’t make a lot of sense from a canon perspective. I honestly thought the Halo 3 Arms race trailer was an excellent segway to explaining the different weapons and armor you see in Halo 3.

Here is my theory: In Halo 2, the Marines were in the middle of a recall of the MA5B on account of the problem with old magazines jamming because 60 rounds being crammed into the magazines for years and years weakened the spring mechanism. This created a great opportunity for them to redesign the MA5B into the MA5C which would have better stability, less rounds to cut down on jamming, a longer barrel to increase accuracy and a sleeker and lighter design than the MA5B.

During this temporary recall on Earth most MA5B rifles were pulled out of service and the BR55 and M7 SMG were kept to fill the gap. The Marines in Halo 2 also carry the M6C pistol which is excellent for dealing with insurrectionists and rebel forces but not the best for dealing with Covenant forces.

Keeping this in mind Earth was probably commissioning the Misriah armoury on Mars to create a more powerful handgun but less expensive than the M6D which for all we know was lost when Reach fell and the Pillar of Autumn was destroyed. This new cheaper but more powerful handgun became the M6G.

(Note: to those pointing out that “The M6G was in the game Reach” I honestly feel that was a mistake on Bungie’s part. I believe the pistol in Reach is the Army’s M6B, which is a powerful handgun but has stability (bloom) and ammo capacity issues as well as a tendency to over penetrate weaker targets like Insurrectionists which can lead to collateral damage. The Army sticks with the M6B, Navy/Marines update to the M6C then to the M6D specifically to fight the Covenant but again, Reach and the Pillar of Autumn were lost.)

After the initial attack on Earth, the production of MA5C rifles, BR55HB (longer barrels to deal with long range engagements in Africa), M6G pistols, sniper rifles and the armor you see in Halo 3 was probably accelerated ahead of schedule because Earth needed a resupply of weapons immediately which is reflected in the Arms Race trailer.

The M90 Mk II shotgun from Halo 2 was probably the standard issue Marine shotgun of the time but after the first battle of Earth the UNSC probably started gathering up the most common shotguns they could find, those being the M90a which I theorize were given to police forces and used for smaller military engagements based on the M90a’s weaker firepower and smaller ammo capacity of 6 shots. Since these, if used extensively by civilian law enforcement as I theorize, they would be the most readily available in the event of preparation for a planet wide attack which is probably why you see that shotgun used in Halo 3.

This is how I explain the weapon and armor changes from Halo 2 to Halo 3 but I still don’t think we should have been fighting Brutes in ODST and more or less don’t consider ODST canon.

Halopedia and the books help a good bit too.

I love how some of us get so into the games wondering about things when we don’t realise we are playing a video game level and in our 10 minute speed run, the game’s story still progresses at its normal time frame…

Guys Check this place out to get games cheap, they are digital download keys so no delivery problems. They do most formats including smartphone and origin. They also do dlc for cheap and also add-ons like skins for cs:go weapons. I was browsing when I came across AC: unity for £2.19 and Batman Arkham Knight Premium edition for £10. Halo Master Chief Collection for the Xbox one for only £6.10. It’s not a scam I have tried it and the site is verified and legit. Link: link removed by moderator

Yup, especially in halo 2 because you play as both the arbiter and chief

Did you know High Charity and Uprising are basically happening at the same time?

Yeah that’s why I like it, it feels intense idk why

The Prophet of Truth was secretly having the brutes takeover the Covenant for some time before the events of Gravemind in Halo 2.

Funny in the first 3 Halo games I could feel this ‘connection’ but with the future ones I just cant… Strange…

A simple way to explain weapon changes, is the fact we are losing the war. By the time the war starts most natural supplies on earth would have been used up. Most of our colonies crushed, we would be facing a resource shortage. The military would resort to using what is available. Also military protocol is in place to keep Earth’s location secret. So some ships may still have weapons from the beginning of the war, or at least since fall of reach technology. So it actually makes sense why each major space ship has different weapons.
